You can freeze butter and grate it in place of suet or as I do simply mix butter and flour together

Holland and Barrett have a range of gluten free online- I found dumpling mix there a while ago.

Suet is animal fat and is therefore Gluten Free.

It's usually dusted in flour to stop the bits sticking together.

Not when its rolled in Wheat flour to make it pour freely and not stick together in the packet

Nope! They add wheat flour to keep it from clumping.

Same thing ain't it :-)

I haven't bought it in a couple of years, but I think Morrison's own brand vegetarian suet was gluten free. Check the label.

Their "real" suet unfortunately wasn't.

Suet is gluten free I use it all the time unless your vegertarian as well. Should not be a problem? I make bread pudding with it all the time. But yes you can use Butter.

Hi pet-lamb, now I smiled when I read this, as it is stew and dumpling weather that's for sure LOL now as stated by others you don't need suet for dumplings just a fat, so here's a recipe that is also lactose free:

withoutgluten.co.uk/recipes...

The stew itself uses stewing steak but I'm not a veggie.

You can use butter if you're not lactose intolerant but these were made specifically for lactose free vegetarian coeliac. As for the flour you can use any plain gf flour like Doves farm or you can use a self raising gf flour.

One thing to bear in mind is that they expand when cooking so keep them small as the first time I tried this it was more like a dumpling pie topping.

Last time I looked, Blue Dragon was gluten free. It was in a sachet and they were on a special 3 for 2 or something (also Morrisons). Needless to say, it was only Oyster Sauce that was GF and I didn't want 3 - aaargh!

Suet in its natural unprocessed form is Gluten Free. But suet is usually packaged coated in wheat flour so it does not stick together and therefore is not G F.

I buy vegetarian suet which is coated in rice flour from a health food shop.

I get unprocessed suet from my local butcher. If you freeze you can grate it the food processor as you need it!

You're so right about the grated suet being covered in flour as indeed are packets of grated cheese which I discovered having innocently bought some ( nothing on the packet said anything about flour or wheat) and was of course ill for about three days afterwards. Be warned!

Yes I have just found out that Pre grated cheese and some Mayos. But I don't do dumplings I do make bread pudding. I always read everything and normally avoid if any chance. Just moved house so can't check which suet was the one I used for sure. But sure it was GF one. I was t ill so must have been. Probably came from health food shop down the road and they know about gf diet. So sure it must be.
