Hi everybody, I was wondering if anyone else has this problem.I have to take amoxiciline 500 every 6 hours for a tooth infection. I've been taking them for 3 days already together with some painkillers like paracetamol and my tummy started to get upset but I can't stop the course because I'm still in pain.Anyone else getting this symptoms from the antibiotics? What is the best way to treat a leaky gut?

Hi Mikeila,

Having an upset tummy is a very common side effect of taking antibiotics; and to my knowledge has little to do with having a leaky gut.

Antibiotics along with curing your tooth infection, will also attack and kill some of your gut flora, throwing it out of balance.

Do keep taking the antibiotics; but also head towards foods (and maybe supplements) that are rich in probiotic properties, such as live yoghurt etc.

Good luck with that toothache!

If you stop early the bacteria can become resistant. Misusing antibiotics is dangerous to you and others. Yes they can irritate the gut as they may wipe out good bacteria. Aim to restore it afterwards. You may also have been prescribed these because you have another health problem and dental surgery can put you at additional risk.

As soon as I finish a course of antibiotics I start my probiotics. Antibiotics do a real number on my gut, however are sometimes necessary😥. Toothaches are no fun! I sure hope you feel better! I see people everyday with tooth pain as I work for an Endodontist. I also do not have the best teeth. Take care of yourself!!!-hugs-💛oh also pain meds hurt my tummy

I listen to a lot of alternative practitioners and their take on antibiotics and probiotics is to start taking the probiotics straight away and not wait until the antibiotics have totally eliminated all the good bacteria in your gut, and then continue to take them for a few weeks after you have finished the course of antibiotics.

I feel for you as mouth infections are my worst enemy - I find swilling warm salt water around my mouth also helps lots but don't swallow it - in fact it was my dentist that gave me this useful tip and I use it if I can feel an infection coming on and it usually halts it in its tracks.

Hope this helps.

Are you taking probiotics to keep some good bacteria and to keep it balanced? Did you try eating with the antibiotic so maybe you will not have tummy ache? Maybe it's the pain pills causing tummy ache?

Your gut may be reacting to the medicine. Read medicine ingredients list. There may well be a filler derived from intolerant stuff. See whether there is an inert alternative. Paracetamol may be packed with intolerant filler. Changed my prescription as intolerant to original filler. Use soluble paracetamol, as filler is magnesium bicarbonate (mineral). HTH

Thank you.I didn't know that about paracetamol. I will check it.

Hi again guys..I really don't know what to do..This morning I saw my dentist again because I was in pain with my gum now (the tooth is out) having a bad infection. It was as I expected: the gum got infected and she gave me another medicine, Metronidazole every 6 hours for 5 days. The thing is, after the second tablet my tummy started to play and got diarrhea. Not very bad but, I'm scared now and don't know what to do.I've checked the ingredients and doesn't seems to have gluten in it:povidone, magnezium stearate, silica and maize starch. Can anyone give an advise? This is after I already had one week of amoxiciline ! Thanks

Unfortunately, antibiotics can often cause diarrhoea, even though they may not contain gluten.

It's important to take the course, so you need to manage the problem. Keep hydrated, possibly get some rehydration sachets from the chemist if the problem is very bad. Make yourself some old fashioned chicken soup. Eat bananas. Keep taking the probiotics.

Ask for some advice from your doctor or chemist.
