Identifying how you've been glutened

I was up most of the night last night being sick. I'm trying to narrow down what I ate & drank yesterday that could have kickstarted it. The only new things I came up with were the pulled ham hock and cheese crisp bakes from the tesco free from range or the glass of coop fair trade wine!!

Has anyone tried either of these and had any problems?? Xx

Ingredients

Ham Hock (25%), Potato, Mature Cheddar Cheese (Milk) (10%), Water, Rapeseed Oil, Rice Flour, Red Onion, Spring Onion, Mozzarella Cheese (Milk), Gram Flour, Dried Potato, Cornflour, Maize Flour, Potato Starch, Double Cream (Milk), Salt, Dextrose, Disodium Diphosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Xanthan Gum, White Pepper, Ham Hock contains: Pork, Salt, Sugar, Preservative (Sodium Nitrite)

If you are very sensitive to gluten the dextrose can do it. Or you maybe sensitive to something else in the ingredients

Dextrose can do that to me, I don't eat anything that has it in it.

I wouldn't expect the dextrose in a free from product to be wheat derived - . Its far more likely (and cheaper) to be from corn or potato so it would be a very strange choice by Tesco.

Still no need for it to be there mind. Whats wrong with using a bit of sugar in the marinade!!

Maybe you have a bug?

If these are the only two suspects - I suspect the same.

I am a very sensitive Coeliac and I find that the crisp bakes do NOT affect me at all. Hope you find the cause of your problem xxx

Hi tjs1008, I react to xanthan gum - I can't eat anything containing it without having a reaction. It took a while to figure that out. I also only became lactose-intolerant over a year or so after going gluten free, so I can only take very small amounts of milk before I get a reaction. I also find dextrose can be troublesome... Just my own experience. When I first went gluten free I thought I could tolerate a lot more things than I can now (eg, no longer tolerate gf oats, coffee, mushrooms, bluecheese, etc etc...). I don't know how long you have been gluten free but I find the body changes constantly as to what it tolerates or not. Good luck! Hope you feel much better soon.

Agree with this. My colleague got Glutened over the weekend some 12 months since the last time. Tiny exposure led to the majority of a day in bed. Pre-diagnosis would hardly have noticed a thing.

tjs1008 how miserable for you - hope you feel better. I am extremely sensitive to some of the ingredients Tassie identified in the product, particularly dextrose. Maize flour would be a no no too and I steer clear of rapeseed.

Hi tjs, hope you are recovering. I also react badly to xanthan gum.

I had to have a month on antibiotics recently and have found that some foods I had been ok with are now a problem. If you have had any health issues recently, what you can tolerate may be changing. Or it may just be a bug.

Hope you can work it out.

Thanks guys, feeling better today, although appetite not what it was!! I've had ceoliacs since 2007 and try to be really careful. Maybe it was just a bug!! Will be a while before I try any of them again though!! Xx

You poor thing! My partner has similar issues - once he's had a reaction to one thing he gets sensitive to things he's usually ok with.

We're now working with a local hospital on the low FODMAP diet. It stabilises the gut then they reintroduce things and work out what's wrong. Getting a dietitian referral has helped so much.

I had some coop fair trade wine last night - have felt very poorly since 4am ..am on a very strict gluten free diet & this is the only thing I had which was different. Don't usually have any reaction to wine. There are a whole list of ingredients on bottle - including yeast nutrients, I have queried thus with the coop this morning, they said they are legally obliged to say if it contains gluten, ..but I wonder if this could be something to do with Brewers yeast..they are meant to be getting back to me...will let you know! ....
