Please can anyone tell me if stress can trigger an attack. I was stressed over an incident at work and wham...........two days later came down with an awful attack. Five days later it is gradually easing and I can't think of anything I ate to cause this.

Has anybody out there had an attack similar to this and what they do to help prevent it.

Hi taffy,

I'm curious to know - an attack of what exactly?

Stress can cause IBS symptoms in some people, but that's different to being glutened.

Have you also considered the possibility that you could have other food intolerances? It took me six months after going gluten free to figure out I had a dairy intolerance; and another three months on top of that to discover that I was also intolerant to soya. My dairy symptoms were fairly similar to getting glutened.

I'm not sure how much of what I have written here will help you - but I thought I'd mention it anyway, to see if it rings any bells.

I hope you get back to normal soon.

IMO it's totally improbable that you'd get glutened by stress alone, thus I'm with regalbirdy and if you feel it's more like a gluten reaction than you'd expect you should consider other food sources / allergies and not the incident at work. However, it's more likely the stress caused anxiety which upset your general health, which is quite a normal reaction to an upsetting incident. Good luck with it all!

Now that I'm gluten free, stress does not seem to affect my symptoms. However, I do think it (a very stressful work related incident) was the trigger for bringing on the full gamut of my coeliac symptoms for the first time.

I had limited and unexplained (to be honest, unexplored and tolerated) gastro symptoms, mild ataxia, cramps, mouth ulcers etc for 30+ years, but the work issue coincided closely with the first onset of severe gut pain, bowel problems and persistent rash.

Perhaps the stress you've faced has increased your sensitivity? Stress has such an effect on our hormones and overall health that I don't think your theory should be entirely dismissed.

Either way - I do hope you're well again soon.

Hi taffy, I agree with the others here in that stress especially severe stress can and does cause stomach issues and you may have been accidentally glutened so there could be 2 things going on here. And I hope that you feel better soon.

Coincidentally there was a really interesting article in yesterdays Sunday Times about how more people are visiting their Dr's with head aches caused by stress and it focussed on a new book by Dr Carole Hungerford and what really interested me was how Carole said how additives and processed foods were causing many modern health issues and she talked about the paleo diet. She also said how whisky coloured with caramel triggered head aches in her and I thought this Dr is very aware so I checked her out on line and surprise surprise Carole has an interest in gastro intestinal illness' and coeliac in particular. I love how Carole says that GP's ought to take a leaf out of vets book as vets ask about an animals diet before giving medication. And I thought wow I'll post a link as I knew many coeliac would be interested but you have to subscribe to the Times.

Here's a link to an article ''eat your way to good health'' by Carole:

Very interesting article Jerry and she's prescribing a way of life that you recommended to me when I posted about my son. I wish we had better access to organic fruit and veg and the government would do something about our food industry who are only concerned with money and not what the ingredients in their products do to humans!

A friend of mine, who has border collies, often discusses her ailments with her vet. She reckons she gets better advice on foods and supplements from the vet, rather than her doctor. Her dogs eat a gluten free diet!

Hey taffy - I definitely agree that stress has a major role to play in our health (I very often get ill, or my iritis flares up, after incidents of stress). I don't think it can 'cause' a gluten attack, but I do believe it can make you more susceptible, or react more strongly, to certain items than when you are feeling healthy and in a positive frame of mind. I hope this helps, and I really hope you feel better very soon. Hugs!

Hi Lexy

My uveitis flares up if I'm stressed. I'm currently on my third flare this year, after several years without a problem. Thankfully I keep a supply of steroid drops at home.

I came across this site recently and thought I would share it.
