Reaction to almost all GF bread

I have been diagnosed Coeliac for 10 years. The only GF bread I can eat without an adverse (vomiting) reaction is Wellfoods loaf, now only on prescription or by post. Does any one else have this reaction to commercial GF loaves?

I cannot eat any of the commercial 'gluten free' foods. I haven't eaten bread in years, nor cakes, biscuits etc.

I think we're all different, and it seems there are many levels of intolerance and you add to the uniqueness of CD !

Hi Froggy, this has come up before and many commercial gluten free breads have a lot of fat in them and much more than wheat bread. Some coeliac have issues with xanthan gum and or psyllium husk, this can be because they are hydroscopic so they absorb a lot of moisture so they are roughage and can act like a laxative, psyllium husk is not only used as a binder in some gf foods but also in colonic irrigation. Xanthan gum is a mould that can be grown on wheat. So it could be many reasons.

As for Wellfoods one of our members Apricot (Janet) is not only a coeliac but is the MD of Wellfoods and they use artificial sugars like dextrose that can be wheat deriv's from other grains like beet or tapioca so Janet will be thrilled with your comment.

Oh Froggy....thank you. What really thrills me..is that YOU are well...and happy.

That as they say...is priceless.

Anyone have any problems that I can sort...I am only at the other end of the emails...janet@wellfoods.co.uk

I've not had any problems with bread, besides finding one that actually tasted ok! Could you be reacting to something else in it, like dairy perhaps?

Listen guys I have got coeliac for the past 20 yrs and that's not all under active thyroids high blood pressure, diverticulitis, arthritis in the knees. Can't complain I forgot I morn when I am in pain. But best of all no wheat,no eggs,no dairy, so when I bake the most delicious choc cake I use olive oil instead of butter powdered eggs and oh I forgot no nuts either .I LOVE soya milk no choice

Hi Froggy,

Although I'm only coming up to 6 weeks since going GF, I'm 'feeling' the commercial loaves most definitely.

My breadmaker arrived today, got scales for £10 at John Lewis and I've downloaded what looks like a fantastic book on making 'proper' breads and doughs (Nicole Hunn) so hopefully I'll be starting my 'sourdough starter' this weekend although I do eventually have to finish off a freezer of prescription bread. Ugh!

I want to know what goes in my loaf from now on. I'm curious, have you tried to make your own and still had reactions?
