I am CD and GF for 13 months. I still struggle with lethargy. Is this normal?

Hi there, I'd check out these past posts on here:

We all have different experiences after diagnosis and some of us felt better quickly when others struggled like you so until others in the same boat as you answer these past posts should help. I imagine that you possibly still have anaemia as this is common and is debilitating. The reason for this is that it takes time for our villi to recover and I would ask your GP for a full blood test to confirm iron and mineral levels.

And I hope that you start to feel the benefits of going gf soon.

Hi lizzycoop

Following my coeliac diagnosis, I subsequently found out I was B12 deficient, had a dairy intolerance, was vitamin D deficient and that I also have a soya intolerance. All of these gave me fatigue and lethargy.

The path to wellness isn't always straightforward and you may also go on to discover that you have vitamin deficiencies and secondary intolerances.

Fatigue can also be caused by thyroid problems; and I think it may be a symptom of diabetes as well.

You may need to consider going back to your local GP for further blood tests.

I hope you succeed in figuring out how to combat your lethargy and I hope you feel better soon.

I agree with Jerry and Regalbirdy. Lethargy is normal but 13 months after diagnosis I couldn't say. Are you eating a gluten free diet? ( not everyone does) like above you could be anaemic and/or mineral difficient? Go talk to your gp about your symptoms.

Yes it can be, my hubby takes vitamin B tablets slow release in the morning, this can be due to lack of absorbtion of vitamins from your food etc. Calcium tablets are also a good idea too.

I don't know if it's relevant to your case, but my main gluten symptom is a kind of drugged tiredness (if I get glutened I keel over and sleep for hours). Since going GF (though not diagnosed CD) I've finally got my energy back and any lethargy is a clear pointer that I've eaten something I don't get on with (not necessarily gluten, I've had a similar, less intense, reaction to quinoa as well – I assume it's just hard on damaged guts). I'm over three years GF now and didn't really lose the lethargy until I packed in heavily processed foods.

Lizzycoop - I got diagnosed with CD two and a half years ago. I felt immediately better on a GF diet and was also advised by nutritionist to avoid dairy for at least one year. My doc has been less than useless in helping me post diagnosis. I am still a little underweight, and I also have overwhelming tiredness that is almost debilitating some days. I have iron supplements and B12 and ViTD. I also take pre and pro biotics and glutamine (not related to Gluten). I have come to the point now where I have just resigned my self to it being part of CD. I do find however that exercising helps me enormously. I was a strong runner before being ill with undiagnosed CD and now make every effort to get out and exercise. I hope you start to feel better soon.
