Is there such a thing as GF chorizo?

I am looking for the salami type - not chorizo flavoured sausages. Nothing apparent in Coeliac UK directory. I have a hankering for a salami and prawn paella. How could I make this if real chorizo is not GF?- any suggestions?

I buy one called Goikoa Sarta De Chorizo Picante, which is made from just pork, paprika and salt. It's available at Ocado and Waitrose.

I've not had any problems with it, but I'm not super sensitive to cross contamination and I don't know if there's any risk of cross contamination in the factory... Goikoa is a Spanish company, so you could ask them if if you wanted.

Unearthed also make one that doesn't have any gluten containing ingredients, but I've not tried it.

I'm not sure that all the smaller brands make it into the food and drink directory.

Hi , asda extra special chorizo picante has no gluten/wheat in the list of ingredients. I have CD and don't ever have a problem with it. Real chorizo should be gluten free. I know that in Spain I have never seen chorizo that's not gluten free, and I spend a few months there each year. In fact I find it easier eating there than in the UK!

I buy mine in Morrison's Chorizo campesinos artesano picante by Elpozo. Authentic Spanish dry cured spicy paprika sausage. Its got the gluten free symbol on it and made from pork with spices. You can find the refrigerated one or a smaller 200g sausage in the cured meat area. :0)

I have recommended this chorizo to my gluten free clients:

"Proper" chorizo should be OK so if you look for authentic Spanish stuff that is a better starting point than supermarket own brands. Have you tried Lidl?

Authentic Spanish is definitely the way to go but just to warn I was glutened by some chorizo from Lidl last year. I'm not sure what the exact brand was though. It was a sausage type rather than slices.

I've bought Unearthed's little cooking chorizos (not quite the same I know) in the past (Waitrose and probably elsewhere) and they do other types. They might be more clued up as they're one of the few companies that specify whether dextrose is corn or wheat derived - their Milano salami is fine.

If anybody knows any safe finocchiona, I'd be very interested...

I think the Co-op sells a Spanish chorizo that is labelled gluten free. I've used it with no bad effects.

GFG

I think all chorizo is GF! I just check the labels. Sausage like that isn't like 'regular' sausages that have a filler is some sort. The Coeliac UK book isn't exhaustive, I gave up using it years ago because it's way too restrictive to live by it albeit it's handy to look something up at home sometimes I guess.

LIDL sell a large salami that's fab, great as meat by itself or on pizza, or used like chorizo in pasta or risotto etc.

Sometimes it has dextrose in it, which may or may not be derived from wheat. Coeliac UK classes this as gluten free but some people still react to it – I could eat it for the first 18 months or so I was gluten free but now get a definite (low-level) reaction. Luckily quite a lot of brands don't use it though.

I agree ... from what I understand from my part Italian Chef friend, it is not traditional to put wheat into salamis, chorizo etc. I haven't had any problem with any of them (though I do also check the ingredients just in case)
