Janie, I am sorry that you have now got an extra problem to deal with. I am not sure what I am going to say will help you because I am in a similar position except I am not having a glucose tolerance test because the treatment is, according to my GP, change of diet and lifestyle changes. As I already eat healthy food and exercise 30 mins everyday I didn't see the point. I am already seeing a dietician who has told me to lose weight. I eat the same sort of stuff as you minus the gf bread and sent me away with several leaflets on lifestyle changing advice, how to avoid stuffing yourself with the wrong food and how to monitor times when you comfort eat etc etc. All very patronising and no help whatsoever.

Did you explain to whoever told you to improve your diet that you already ate a healthy diet? If so what did they say? Given my experience with a dietician I am loath to suggest you ask for referral to a dietician as I think they may well give you prescriptive advice. Undoubtedly some people on this site have had a good experience with dieticians and indeed I found FODMAPs advice very good. But I am sure there is someone out there who can think outside the box and give you professional advice taking into account what you are eating now and how to address your glucose intolerance.

A friend of mine has been diagnosed with glucose intolerance and it has been linked to her medication ( lithium). This site has a list of medication that can affect your levels, I don't know if it will be of any help. nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/enc...

She is taking all sugar, including fruit, out of her diet and increasing her exercise. I hope it will work.

Have you looked at the Paleo diet?

That is not much fun, but I suppose it helps to know there is a reason for feeling rubbish.

Low G.I foods contain enough fibre to slow down digestion of the natural sugars in the food you eat. The paleo diet can still be quite high in natural sugars and fats which will not necessarily help in managing your blood glucose.

If you are currently eating a very low carbohydrate diet which can easily happen when you first go gluten free, you might find that including small portions of high fibre, low G.I. carbs such as brown rice, quinoa or sweet potatoes could help.

Kate..Never tried quinoa, how would I cook it and use it in a dish? Sweet potatoes I love with lots of roasted veg.....to be true full I haven't cooked much with rice...so I shall be going Asda later.

Urban girl when I next see my doctor next month I'm going to ask about seeing a dietician and I'm taking me hubby with me as he does all the cooking....

Penel.... I'm writing down everything I eat so I can show my doctor what I'm eating...so we shall see....

Quinoa is cooked just like rice and you can use it in the same kind of dishes. Some people use it instead of porridge. It's very versatile. Not the same texture as rice or oats.

I've had a look around the PubMed site. There's a lot of research supporting low carb diets for diabetics, but in practise this can be difficult to achieve I think, and It might not be helpful in your situation.

Good luck with the doctor.

If you want to read a good scientific explanation of how food affects our bodies I would recommend this. The author is an American endocrinologist expert.

I have tried some of the recipes from 'Adrea lifeafterbread' on the blog. There are some low GI recipes and as I can't eat bread they have been very useful for me.
