My son was also diagnosed at 16 with Schizophrenia

My water broke early and they forgot to treat for group b beta strep. He was in hospital for two weeks being treated for it. He went home well but at 16 was diagnosed with Schizophrenia. He was born in 1989. I believe there is some kind of correlation either to the medical or the infection.

I'm so sorry to hear that your son was ill at birth, and that he was diagnosed with Schizophrenia age 16. We have not seen research showing that the two are linked, though we will investigate further, and let you know if we find a causative link.

I do hope he is getting the care he needs.

Sorry to hear about your son. I've seen in a couple other posts here where survivors have developed mental health disorders. I am also a survivor or strep-b, in fact I am just slightly younger than your son. I have bi-polar type 2, severe anxiety, and schizo-effective disorder with no family history and no traumas or incidents that increase the chance of developing a mental health condition. I do think it is likely that having strep as an infant raises the risk factor of mental health conditions. During early childhood 4-6'ish,I developed some autonomic nervous system issues with no discernible cause. In the last year I was diagnosed with MS. While I don't know if there is a scientific link between these conditions, I do think strep is the root cause.
