Covid antivirals - why?

NHS have told me I have a condition that entitles me to antivirals for Covid. But haven't told me what is or which are the qualifying condition(s). GP doesn't know either.

I think this is off! Makes me worry, and I'm not easily fazed. Is it an existing condition, if so which, or is it a new condition and, if so, what is that?

I do think the entitlement should come with an explanation.

As I understand it, the only way to find out is for the GP to consult some digital database.

Harrumph.

You are obviously wise enough to figure out best course of action & I'd also be wary considering you know more about this thing you don't know about, than any of your doctors lol. I dunno if you're in UK but US is no different. Keep your guard & wisdom up, & obviously if they can't explain it, don't go along with it! Hopefully they can soon explain that you don't need this thing they say you need, but can't tell you why, & if they don't (they won't),well at least you know. 🙏

My husband and I are both on that list, my condition is because I have had a blood cancer and I was told by our GP surgery, no problem and my husbands is because he has COPD and Asthma, nobody’s trying to keep it secret from you it’s just a general letter to all affected.

No, I wasn't suggesting anyone was trying to keep secrets. It's just a bit worrying if you don't know which condition is relevant.

I got my letter when PCR tests were still going and got told to if I tested positive to send it as urgent, if necessary via a courier, it scared me, so I asked my surgery.

Yeah, surgery doesn't know!

If you were on the 'highly vulnerable' list during the COVID pandemic then you may be be offered antiviral medication to help reduce the risk of more severe symptoms should you be infected by COVID. They work well but only if you start them as early as possible after infection - hence the need to quickly test if you think you have COVID.

I wasn't on the highly vulnerable list during Covid.

Someone responsible for your medical care - in the case of a respiratory disease such as aspergillosis that would likely be your respiratory consultant - has decided to make this medication available to you. You don't have to accept the medication should you ever be infected but they are available to you as an option for your safety.

These medications are not available to those at lower risk.

Yeah, if I am infected I will accept the medication. That's not what bothers me. It's having a qualifying condition that no one can identify for me. Quite possibly us the aspergillus add you say, but I think I should injure for sure. Whatever...I've given up trying to find out now. Giving up is usually the best path to take with GPs.
