I'm new here.

Went to anAudiologist, & was I surprised! I thought it was just my left ear. Turns out it's both ears. once fitted with hearing aids, unbelieveable, I actually hear my air in my nostrils, (breathing) amazin'. Did not realize just how much I was not hearing.

The nice part is you really can't see them in my ears, & I wear my hair short, I am female, I don't mind people KNOWING that I'm wearing hearing aids, , as long I AM the one telling them, (they can not see them, which is nice! Now I can really hear again, didn't realize how it progresses without knowing. Another one of those things that can happen as you get older, who knew?

I know exactly what you mean. My hearing has been at least slightly impaired since childhood, I think, but I really wasn't aware of it at the time. In college, I used to joke that I could hear better with my glasses on; I did not realize that it wasn't a joke, it was really true. I was unconsciously lip-reading to supplement my poor hearing. As I aged, it got worse, and then worse still, until it became obvious that I had a problem. I remember the day that I first got my hearing aids, and discovered that my HAIR made noise as it brushed across my ears! I had never experienced that before. And when I left the building, I heard birds singing! I heard birds as a child, but had not heard birdsong in years. I thought it was because I lived in cities as an adult, and that there probably were no birds around, but I was amazed to discover the city was full of birds, I just had not been hearing them. It has become still worse as I get old, and even with the hearing aids it is difficult to hear on the phone, and most painful of all, it is difficult to hear and understand my own grandchildren. It is very isolating. I love to write letters, the old-fashioned way, but nobody wants to do that anymore. I often have to settle for texting, but it just isn't the same as talking or letter-writing.

Hi, I'm glad you got the hearing aids! Like judmilla, I realized that my hearing has not been good since childhood. A friend was brave enough to suggest I had a problem. A wonderful audiologist fitted me with hearing aids when I was 51 years old. I wish I had done this sooner! No one can see them even if my hair is pulled back. The only annoying issue is I must take them off before exercise because of moisture.
