Hi ya, I have fibro, degenerative disc disease in c3-c7 (Cervical Spondylosis), again in t1/t2, and l3-s1 (ankolysing spondylitis), nerve compression in the hips, narrowing of the spinal canal, and pains and numbness in both lower legs and shins and feet. I couldn't walk without my crutches but if your doctor or hospital won't help you, then firstly ask to be referred to your OT (occupational therapist) and they will provide items you need. I was provided with a perching stool and bed rail from Mediquip and I bought the crutches for approx £5 from eBay. Ensure there is plenty of rubber on the bottom. Even tho I was not prescribed them, my doctor is use to me walking in the surgery with crutches. You can get the rubber pads that go on the bottom of the crutches from eBay but just check what size you have as the sizes can vary. I hope this helps you. What I dread is going to work. I've had an assessment done and im hoping there would be more money to live on as I only get ESA of £65 a fortnight and out of that I have to find £120 to go towards my rent which leaves £140 + £220 enhanced DLA to pay electric and gas, food and £28 council tax and my daughter's clothes so we look at bargains in tescos and buy things she needs as Christmas presents. Anyway I hope these tips help you. Any problems just send me a message. No im not a doctor lol - wish I waz, but I'm just a sufferer which has got worse over the years as I was diagnosed in 1998 and do have days in bed. If you wish to be friends so we have support we can either email or chat on fb or even join a fibro/lupus group which there are 2 of us admins in the UK and 5 admins in America. It's a picture of a red parrot. Anyway I hope this has helped and even tho I'm not a doctor this is from a person as a patient who suffer like many of you. I did forget to mention I have padded velcro grips on the crutches. Sending love and hugs, sandy x

You could try Occupational Therapy.

One area I didn't know about was the Red Cross.

I was in so much pain during a flare up I was stuck half way/down the stairs. At this time i only had a bannister on one side of the stairs so nothing to help me up.

My O.T was on holiday and, like you, felt a desperate need for crutches to help with both walking and balance.

The Red Cross do charge a fee for some things - like a raised toilet seat is 20 pounds, but with the crutches, all i had to do was give them my height (so they could get me the right height crutches), they just asked me for a small donation cover their petrol expenses. It may be worth a call to them?

I bought both my walking sticks from eBay as it can be quicker and easier than trying to find somewhere to get them free. Both for under a tenner.

I've been making handle covers for years using the neoprene waist supports you can get in Poundland. It's essentially a strip of neoprene that you can cut to shape and then tape onto the handles. It's good padding and doesn't get slippery in the rain. Plus you can make 6-8 covers out of one strip :-)
