I do find background noise hard at times as i find it difficult to hear if someone is talking to me and that in turn irritates and stress' me. I have a delay in hearing then processing what the person has said then replying. If Paul and i are chatting i need no noise. it's one of the reasons i don't socialise much as i come across rude.

Could it be tinnitus ?

Yes, all the time! And I'm really struggling at work because of it - I'll do anything I can to avoid answering the phone as its a really noisy office. I've also found I need total silence to go to sleep, whereas before I used to quite like having the radio on.

Coz its me shelley... ww both looking on same site how freaky. But your question rang a bell with me, so i thought id answer the question. so imagine how gob smacked when i realised it was off you. I cant stand anyone one the phone and having the tv on at the same time.... but ye im very noise sensitive. im having a flare up at the min... serves me right for getting cocky on these new tablets and working 50 hrs a week some wks, mostly between 30 to 42hrs every wk.

I have peripheral sound and noise issues but I have had problems with my ears and hearing since I was a child. I seem to pick up background noise far better than noises in front of my face, literally. I could hear a pin drop and sound deafening, but someone talking to me standing in front of me I would struggle to hear what they are saying. It's pure crazy, but I am used to it now, had it so long.

It isn't anything to do with Fibro as far as I am personally concerned as I have had it for at least forty years unfortunately.

Now, I used to have this (and still do without my hearing aid) - I thought it was an inner ear disorder, as my balance was a bit off, but tests seem to have shown it as otosclerosis - it's where the small bones in the middle ear fuse, and you get a combination of tinnitus, and loss of low-frequency sounds. Male voices just disappeared for me! Of course, it meant I couldn't hear my OH moaning ... ;)

I go through episodes of having like a buzzy sound particularly in my left ear rather like distorted waves and static. Usually manage to just put it away but sometimes it magnifies and turns into a sort of how to describe it like when you listen to a sea shell to here the sea sort of noise.

I am sensitive to loud noise and constantly turn the tv down oh turns up as he is very very deaf. I wonder if his deafness is actually gradually effecting my hearing :( xgins

I have had this since I was a child and drove my parents mad with it. I find some a-ds help a bit and also relaxation. I have gradually began to be more tolerant to things like neighbours washing machine but still cannot stand a vehicle parked outside my house with the engine running. I have to risk a punch in the face and ask them to turn their engine off and if they have the music on - that's a no no!

I really sympathise with you. This can be truly disabling and so few people understand it. Try searching ''soft sound sensitivity syndrome' - yes it is a recognised syndrome. This helped me - just to know I wasn't mad. I also have constant tinnitus and am losing my hearing - but the sounds that vibrate too are still unbearable.

Sensitivity to noise is connected to fibromyalgia (it is in the booklet!!).

I can't stand secondary noise and I get agitated and angry. I have had to move because a young couple moved in next door to me who liked to play their music until the early hours of the morning. After not sleeping for nearly a week I realised I had to move. At the moment it is nice and quiet where I am and I pray that this stays that way. I also hate it when anyone asks me a question when the TV is on, I just can't concentrate with any sort of noise.

Whilst I am sorry that others have this to suffer as well, I'm so relieved to read these posts!

I feel I must be going mad, I seem to be irritated by the simplest noises that my family and others don't even seem to hear!

I did get sent for a hearing test by my GP because I was having such a hard time hearing the tv, what anyone was saying to me etc, just as many of you here have posted.

The result came back as 'normal', but the audiologist said I had the same problem as him, in that my ears pick up high pitch well, but not low.

There is no hearing aid to help this problem yet so I just have to keep asking people to repeat things over and over. It's very frustrating for all, I sometimes ask people to write down what they are saying.

I also have a mild processing problem, I think it's part of my dyslexia, so I usually ask my husband to accompany me medical visits etc, and hate telephones!

I'm a bit foggy today, apologies for ramble!

Definitely! If I'm doing one thing, I can't be listening to someone talking. I can just about cope with the TV on in the background if I'm playing a game or something (sometimes), but I find that I've not heard a word of it; if someone is talking to me and expecting answers, I need no noise in the background, and to not be in the middle of something else. If there are too many distractions, I'll end up not taking everything in, and being very snappy with whoever the poor sod is in front of me!

Hi, I hate loud noises, if tv to loud it really aggravates me, sudden noises, loud noises annoying continuous noises, drives me NUTS

Your not alone and I never used to be like this

Bloody fibroymialga

in reply to Homer

I am the same Nicki! Sometimes the tv is too loud for me, sometimes it's too quiet, it's really variable with me. Sudden noises seem deafening to me, even the hum of the car engine that I never noticed before drives me nuts. I also feel that when I'm a passenger in the car it feels like airline turbulence, it's crazy isn't it!

I never used to be like this either, it's definitely a Fibro thing with me. Sensitivity to sound and light. I need stronger sunglasses too as the ones I had had for years don't block out the bright light enough for me now. All these changes!

This is extremely common with Fibro Moaningmurtal, I think you will find this reading back through the messages on this thread, you certainly aren't alone.
