Hi thought I would just update you my week. It was on Sunday that I had a bit of a 'do' and I lost my speech and got a left sided weakness and was not getting any where at the doctors. Well managed to get in touch with my regular GP yesterday and he came out to see me. He said its not a stroke and he is a bit baffled so he ordered blood tests which have been done and he has been back again today with the results. Everything came back clear he has also faxed the neurologist and is waiting for a reply. He is still not sure what is wrong but because I have has it before 18 months ago and I had brain scans then that all came back clear he is going to wait and see how I go over the weekend and he is going to pop in next week to see how I am doing. Am really upset that No one has any answers but dont blame my GP just hope my speech returns again soon and I regain my strength

Hi getactive,

How scary it must have been for you, your symptoms sounds like a stroke, or prehapes a mini stroke, Hope your GP finds out what happened, Should you feel your symptoms are getting worse or a relapse I would phone 999 and get the A&E to assess your illness as a emergency.

My father in law had a number of mini strokes and managed to regain his mobility and speech over time..........

Best wishes and hope things go well for you and get your diagnosis... XX

So sorry to hear what you're going through right now Getactive, how awful and worrying for you. I am a bit surprised with your symptoms that the Neurologist hasn't replied to the fax, I would've thought that your symptoms were significant enough to warrant being seen immediately. It might be worth chasing this up especially as you are justifiably so concerned about this. I hope you have someone at home to help and support you during this time.

I would strongly advise that you chase up the hospital so you can see a Neurologist asap, have the routine tests and hopefully treatment asap too.

Try not to worry too much as this won't help your recovery. When someone loses the power of speech it doesn't mean to say it won't come back, sometimes it just takes a little time for the body to recover from the trauma it has experienced.

I apologise if I am speaking out of turn, but it does sound that your GP is being a little flippant when you are so worried. Try to contact the hospital on Monday to hopefully get an appointment to see the Neurologist and then take it from there.

In the mean time, try to keep calm, rest and take care of yourself, this will all aid your recovery. Stress will only delay things.

Please know that we are all here for you, we all care about you and want to help and support you in any way we can. Please let us know how you get on and if there is anything we can do to help you.

Here's a hug for you, oh and keep warm too, it's getting chilly out there. ((( hug )))

I get left side/ right side / whole body weakness and numbness all too often.

First they were diagnosed as mini-strokes/TIAs (some were even rediagnosed to full strokes back in 2007) the MRI's and CAT scans have come back clear so the decision was made that they couldn't all be mini-strokes/TIAs - migraines were suggested for a while but ruled out when toprimate didn't stop them, I was investigated for epilepsy with one EEG but that didn't show anything either. At that point the doctors declared they didn't know what they were and I'd just have to learn to live with them.

I'm now wondering if the attacks, episodes or whatever you want to call them are some type of panic attack or my brain putting my body into a protective hibernation as I am more prone to get them if I am stressed, tired, dehydrated or hungry.

I'd be really interested to hear what diagnosis you get for your episodes.

If you have another one get someone to dial 999 and tell the operator you are having stroke symptoms. Your GP really should have assumed you have had a mini-stroke and treated you accordingly with scans of your brain and ultra sound scan of the cartoroid artery in your neck. In the meantime start taking 75mg of asprin to thin your blood a little (everything else is prescription only), it won't do any harm unless you have stomach ulcers - but it might just save your life!

If I was you I'd go back to your doctor and say you want to know if it could have been a mini-stroke since the symptoms fit - especially the speech centre; did you get changes in your eyesight too? I've had some where my eyesight blurred out and two where it massively improved and I didn't need my glasses!!

((((( gentle hugs )))))

Very good advice above! I agree with Julie, I would get straight back in touch with your GP and tell him/her that you can't wait to hear about a referral. You need help now! You have too much worry on your plate with all this right now and it needs to be resolved and you need to know what you are up against.

TIA's are very common, some people don't even know they are having them and we don't generally tend to hear much about them but the effects these "attacks" have can be very significant. Best to get it all checked out asap, so hopefully you are reassured and can concentrate on rest and recovery. Wishing you all the best, take care and please keep in touch regarding what's happening, we do care about you and how you are managing.

I agree with julie, just thought I'd say what happened with me.

I regularly lose the action of speech where I am silent for a few mins to a few hours.

At these times, I do not want to speak.

I wonder if it is because I am so tired [but not yet aware of it]

I went through a stage of fighting not to pass out and when my bp was hard to find, I ended up in hospital overnight. My mri of my brain was fine and it was suggested it all might have been a form of migraine.

hope they sort you out soon.

regards,

sandra.

I know exactly how you feel as I have been having this happen since I was eleven years old and it took me about 25 years to finally get an answer. It turns out I suffer with a rare type of migraine called hemaplegic migraine and it mimics a mini stroke. I have had a lot of them, then I was taken to hospital with one of the attacks. I was pleased they comfirmed it was not any type of stroke, but the rare type of migraine. My husband was beside himself. Nothing would show up on my MRIs either. I have epeisodes where I lose feeling, use in the leg, arm or face,or everything on one side, if it involves the head I cannot hear on one side, or see, and not feel anything. Sometimes I get brief ones which only last minutes. Sometimes I get attacks that last days. I hope you get it sorted very soon. Try not to worry as it will make things worse xxxxx

Hi was diagnosed with hemi plegic migraine 18 months ago but I never ever got the headache the next neurologist I saw said it is Functional Neurological Disorder I have now been told it might not be that. All I know is that I have had a week now of no sppech and it is frustrating the life of me. The weakness and the fatigue is bad enough but please I need my speech!!!!!!

I get this even without pain in the head, and it was confirmed and seen. I also suffer with occular migraines. This is also painless, it just totally messes the vision up. You see jagged lines like lightening in your vision and it can stay in the vision from a few minutes to a few hours. As I said, not painful just very annoying. But I know where you are coming from with having now speech, but I have got used to it now and it took me 25 years to get answers. I wish you well and I hope you let us all know how you get on with it all xxxxx
