Restless leg

This is so bad I've been in tears! Didn't get a wink of sleep last night so ended up getting up at 6.30am!! It's not just during the night I suffer from this, it's through the day as well, as soon as I sit down, it starts again! Got some tonic water today as I'm told the quinine in it helps. Any other things I can try?

Hi - sorry to hear you are suffering with your legs. I do understand as I have the same problem, somehow I also seem to have ''restless leg syndrome'' in my flipping arms!!!!!! Ylang ylang essential oil can be good for RLS - but if all else fails I have to take Diazepam, only way to stop the muscle contractions. Hope you find some relief and some sleep!.

Hi Foggyness, it's funny you should say your arms because I felt they were becoming restless last night but then I dismissed it thinking I was just getting agitated. I'll mention this to my doctor on Thursday,.

I sympathise Jax, it's not easy is it! I've already got a strategy for tonight, so far I'm stretching my leg and flexing the muscle as much as I can, I've got some tonic water chilling in the fridge, I'm running a bath shortly then got half a bottle of wine to down. Hopefully all this combined will help me sleep ;-) I'm at the Doctor on Thursday to talk about pain but most of all, the restless leg thing. I've been sleepless on and off with fibro for a while now but the leg thing has only kicked in this past month or so.

I was prescribed Methocarbamol for when my legs are driving up the wall. I only take this medication when I've had enough and can't manage the pain, stinging, red hot burning, aching etc. I take two x 750mg tablets and within one hour my restless painful burning legs start to calm down. I've never had to take two doses as one dose seems to work well. My Rheumatologist diagnosed me and was responsible for all my meds.

I hope you all get comfort soon, take care :)

i als to o have this problem and find the only thing help's me is take diazipan

I also have severe restless legs, My Doctor prescribed Premipexole, low dose to start with, and the relief has been enormous, it is a Dopermine agonist, and is licensed treatment for Restless leg syndrome. Go back to your Doctor and ask him about it, Make sure you tell him just how bad it is.

Best wishes Cazx

Hey, (sorry for the confusion - I have rewritten and deleted this comment about 4 times now ! This sites playing up.)

I have been getting this too at night. A nightmare and stopping me from sleeping (no pun intended). Last night I had my legs resting against the head board of my bed, while gently moving my feet in order to give my legs some piece.

It might just be me but I find it helps to have your legs raised above you. That way you can feel all the muscles gently pulling, in this really nice way.

Not so long ago I gave some advice to someone who mentioned RLS, telling them that it worked for me when I lay down and had my legs at 90 degree angle from my torso- while keeping the legs themselves as straight as possible; and doing specific feet movements ('good toes, naughty toes' etc). Although, recently I've been feeling too knackered to hold my legs in up in the air, it's tiring. (It's funny how, your legs can be soo exhausted, yet so fidgety at the same time - I never thought it to be possible until now).

I think in this case, I found it helped to rest my legs on something above me. One evening before bed, for example, I lay back against the arm of my sofa and moved my legs so that they lay comfortably spread out on the top of the sofa- (soft leather headboard- nice and comfy), and let my feet move in slow circular motions - as this is what came naturally. I found it better to let them move in whatever felt natural, best to be aware and make sure the movement is happening but try not to over think, distract your mind with something else. Let it 'come' as they say. So eventually I slowly felt the tension release from my legs- as the muscles got tireder- but it took a while.

Personally I think the higher the better. I haven't actually tried this but I can imagine someone holding my legs in the air for me, doing the movements and slowly releasing the tension. Or I might try resting them up against the wall to keep them straight. I haven't actually tried this, but this is what my body is telling me to do. My Dad gave me the advice of an exercise you can do on the stairs. Take the bottom step (or just before), place your toes on there and slowly move your heel down so you can feel your calf muscles stretching (hold onto handrail to give you balance). Although this depends on where you actually feel the restlessness within your leg- you can navigate this by how far back you rest your foot in the first place but I when tried for example, I felt the stretch but it was too low down (it didn't 'hit the spot' as they say). But it might work for some people. :) Ohh forgot the obvious ! :) Walking. I often find that on days where I've been less active the discomfort has been worse. The best word of advice I can give to anyone is when you have energy- in general. Use it. :) It's so obvious but people need to remember to listen their body and give it what it wants - rather than let the mind take over. (I call it 'going back to basics' as we are all Animals). Tune into it once in a while- if you do that you will generally feel better.

Ahh yes, a restless sensation in arms also sounds familiar... I thought it was me being fidgety in general the other night - but then I saw someone mention it in a question a few weeks ago and realised this wasn't the case. I've no idea what to do about them. I know when you spread them either side and hold a weight in each one it can tire them straight away- but I can imagine it would kill. I certainly couldn't try it.Hope this helps in some way. (Wanted to include all the points- but it's got a bit long lol). It’s really interesting to read all the other remedies (which I have just found out today, reading this), and will be sure to try them if I need to !

Gentle Hugs and Take Care,

I have had a Laminectomy operation in August this year, and since then my restless leg (one only) has driven me mad. The Surgeon says this sometimes can happen (this was at six week check-up) but this is building up as the weeks pass by. I am house bound at the moment so can't get to my GP, telephone calls to GP are emergency only, so I cant even phone to ask if he would prescribe for me. I need help, any suggestions. Val
