Sleep Apena.

Merry Christmas to you all. I was diagnosed with sleep apena a few months ago and got given the machine to aid better sleep. My concern is that it sometimes sounds like it's blowing a gale when i remove the mask to goto the toilet in the middle of the night. . My husband slept In the same bed as me the other night, and he said the machine is very noisy when I'm asleeping, it blows out alot of air. Now we are not sure if it's doing it because that's when my breathing stops so it's giving me a gust of air to help me breathe. Now I don't know if this is normal, as it's the first time we've slept in the same bed for along time due to my noisy sleep antics. Can anyone give me any advice on this if it's normal, or I should contact the hospital and tell them what's going on , I'd be grateful. Many thanks. 🤔.

I don't use the machine but thought when talking to the doctor when considering one she said that the machines give continuous positive airway pressure to keep the throat open so not sure what the noise is as presumably it works constantly so shouldn't suddenly make louder noises. No doubt someone will be along soon who actually uses one and will be able to give some advice. Perhaps check with the hospital tomorrow to see if they can help. Good luck.

My father has one, but has stopped using it as he finds it so uncomfortable, but I know he also complained about the noise it made.

It could be that if your hubby is hearing it while you're wearing it, that it's not a tight enough fit and there is air escaping. I know this was a problem for my father.

Contact whoever gave it to you, and discuss it with them. It has to be worn correctly in order for it to work correctly. xx

Hi MOAL61. Thankyou for replying. Good point about mask not being tight enough. I just assumed it was, because wheni wake up I have a mark on the bridge of my nose, and marks around my mouth and under my ( already darken under eyes ). When I looked in the mirror the other day looked like I had 2 black eyes. Thankyou for your advice. Xx

Hi there, i don't use one myself but I have heard they can be quiet noisy. I know one of our admin team uses one. Hopefully YASMINTINA will be around later and be able to tell you her experiences with the machine. Or maybe we have other members who use it and would be happy to share with you how it works for them

I'm not sure but is there not one that works by putting tubes inside the nose? I would have thought that would feel more comfy to sleep in and less noisy. Xx

Hi . Someone else asked me that,. At the hospital they offered me a full face mask which made me feel claustrophobic or the one that goes over my nose the one I'm using. The consultant did tell me that if this doesn't work they can try something else. I will be asking about that one. Thanks for ya reply. Xx

I use one and yes the noise for other people can be very annoying, I have experimented with numerous masks and have changed machines. Although it is quieter now it is still an issue. As a result I have been sleeping in a separate room for the last year sadly. But it generally means better sleep for us both. (As ‘better’ as it can be with the pain etc!)

Hi debs may I ask if you hit the start stop button its hard when you wake up from a sleep to venture to the bathroom but it will cut out straight away when you push the button. Yes they do sound a wee bit noisy to someone sleeping next to you that’s why I sleep separate to my husband. I would ring the lung function unit today at the hospital my team are marvellous with any issues and normally will see you as soon as they can. It does take time to get used to issues with machine it maybe you need to talk through about what pressure your machine has been set at. I’ve had one over 6 years and yes it’s to keep airways open, at the moment I’ve got sore throat and viral head so I am having to remove it at times as when this happens for me the machine tends to dry out my sinuses. Never worry about ringing in they are so helpful normally and you are new to this. I have a full face mask as could not get on with anything else it does take time but my cousin had 2 bad strokes because they didn’t realise he had sleep apnea . Hi ya. Oh cricky I hope your cousin is on the mend now. Thankyou I may take you up on that offer. Yeah it does take time getting used to the machine and only been on it a month or 2.. I always feel a burden ringing up the clinic.

Try not to feel a burden I think they would rather you did especially as you are new to this, uve just reminded me to ring up for a new water chamber as I have a humidifier attached to my machine. I don’t mind here to help if I can xx

If you google - Sleep Apnea and Low Thyroid - add PubMed ( the website for Research Papers globally ) - which will take you to Research Papers and you can choose which to read. Sometimes the Thyroid can swell when trying to produce more much needed hormones and then it can create pressure on the windpipe. I have read of many cases of this issue and also know people who have suffered - only to find they have a thyroid problem. Am not suggesting this is your problem - but worth excluding with the correct testing ....
