I recently won my pip appeal at a tribunal. Do I still need esa medical or do I qualify automatically for a higher rate? Iv been trying to survive on £62 a week{after £11 has been taken off for loans} Iv been awarded Daily living component at standard rate with enhanced mobility

PIP and ESA are completely separate - stupid but true, given that so many disabled people get both. The fact that you have been awarded PIP should help for ESA though. For your Enhanced Mobility, it depends what you scored points for. If it was for not being able to walk 20 metres, one of the criteria for being put in the ESA support Group is not being able to walk 50 metres, so there is overlap there between PIP and ESA. Check if you are eligible for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction too.

2 completely different benefits. I am on both but both come up for renewal at different times. P.I.P is for daily living and mobility, ESA is work related.x

Hi DazMan,

As others have said, the two benefits are assessed completely differently.

PIP is about you being able to live your life independently. It is a disability benefit.

ESA was supposed to be about helping people with disabilities to rethink the possibility of ever getting work, so we could make whatever contribution we were able within our limited capabilities, and bring more meaning to our lives. A worthy idea. ...unfortunately, successive governments have seen it as a way of reducing the disability benefits bill, and have abused the concept.

It's important that ESA claimants are aware of the above, because your assessment -- the so-called Work Capability Assessment -- is NOT about identifying your disabilities. Instead, it's about identifying your CAPABILITIES.

Because they're looking to see what you might be capable of, it is very difficult to show that you are capable of nothing. After all, you might get a home-based job stuffing envelopes, even with very severe disability.

So, DazMan, before going to your Work Capability Assessment, it's important (nay, essential) that you forget any connection between PIP and ESA. I strongly suggest you go see the Citizens Advice people and anyone else who can advise how your disabilities fit into the way ESA works.

And, don't forget that the original concept of ESA was good. You may want to get into the group that offers significant help in finding disability-friendly work, without the pressures placed on Jobseekers Allowance claimants, rather than going on living forever on benefits in the Support Group.

PIP & ESA are totally separate payments, and both require separate paperwork and medicals, esa is a means tested benefit, where pip is awarded for health conditions that are limiting to living and mobility. ESA brings housing benefit for rent and council tax benefit at the rate set down. Good luck with the medical, ttfn karen.

No esa is a different benefit. It has 2 categories. The wrag. Work related activities group. Where they send you for jobs and to do courses. And support group where they leave you alone. And esa has replaced what was incapacity benefit. And you are either on income related or contributions based if you have worked. You will have to have another assessment. And the points are different from pip. I would recommend getting good advice first. And take someone with you. I think this site may have advice. Good luck because it's a minefield.
