Which medication worked best for you? Amitriptyline, pregabalin or gabapentin?

Consultant has written to GP to recommend prescribing one of the three medications above. Just interested to know which worked best for other people in terms of reducing pains and symptoms whilst having the least side effects? If you had a choice, what would you pick?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi, I’m on Amitriptyline but the lower doses didn’t work so now on 50mg. However I’m also in Mirtazapine (antidepressant) and still having pains etc so past week I have been on steroids 20mg, omeprazole for stomach against the steroids, paracetamol tablets four times a day and duloxetine. I am getting some sleep but still not feeling refreshed and I’m so exhausted all the time. Pains seem to have eased but that maybe wishful thinking or the fact I’m not doing much plus so many tablets my head probably hasn’t got a clue what’s going on! Early days though. Hope they work for you x

Hi I've found that none of these work for me too many side effects, and still loads of pain. I became a cardboard cut out with no feelings. That doesn't mean they won't work for you. Good luck.

Yes! That is exactly how pregabalin made me feel! I like the cardboard cutout comparison 👌

I have problems with all three. Amitryptilene makes me feel like a zombie and I can't take Gabapentin or Pregabalin as they are also prescribed as anti-convulsants and may interfere/react with the anti-convulsant I already take.

Anyone who has controlled epilepsy and needs to be able to drive should be aware that if they start/stop taking the anti-convulsants Gabapentin or Pregabalin, even for conditions other than epilepsy, they need to contact DVLA to inform them. They need to bear in mind that it is possible they could lose their driving licence for 12 months from the dates of starting and stopping.

medication & fibro ...and what works is very much an individual thing. the only way you will find which one works best for you is to try one of them , and if that doesnt help, then try the others. hopefully you will be luck and one of them will help you.

to answer your question - for me personally, pregabalin has been the best with regards to pain relief. xxx

Pregabalin without a doubt for me with Tramadol SR then top up pain relief when needed. Although Pregabalin gets bad press it can be helpful for some if used correctly and not abused. Hope you find the one that suits you best :)

I have been taking the Amitriptyline now for 19 years. It does not help the pain but it helps me have some sleep. I have tried many pain killers including the 2 you have mentioned and I have found that none of them are any good for me. I have tried most meds for pain relief for Fibromyalgia. I now only take Amitriptyline ,paracetamol , ibuprofen, coconut oil. I have also tried reflexology, acupuncture, kiniesiology, noni juice. I have also asked my gp recently if there is any miracle cure. Unfortunatley there is nothing. I am 60, sore every day all day. Get about 4-5 hours sleep and needless to say I am very tired. I still have to work of course as I don't get a pension until 66.

I have been on all 3. My doctor is reducing my pregablin. I am having bad side effects to this drug. I am also on amitriptyline. And maybe come off that when pregablin is out of my system. Before pregablin I was on gabapentin. I came off this as it was doing nothing. I did not have bad side effects on gabapentin. With any drug they will effect us all differently. And fibromyalgia I would not wish to my worst enemy. As it is an invisible illness many people think you are faking it. As they don't see you on the days you can't get out of bed.

Amitriptyline helps sleep, all the others side effects. Tramadol helps when it’s a flare paracetamol and Ibuprofen. I think you just have to try different medication

Hi,My GP prescribed all the three for me at different times in the past but I took pregabalin for about 4 days and stopped, I felt so sick. But I took amitriptyline for about 3 months and stopped. Am glad my GP suggested that I join this group. In 2019 or thereabouts, some related their experiences regarding how the medications they were on for years had created more medical problems for them and that was an eye opener for me. I was referred to pain management clinic last year for pain management program for 6 weeks. It was mentioned that medication can't eliminate chronic pain. For years, I only take children calpol and that's when I can't bear the pain. I just take 4 chewable tablets. I might not take it for weeks so that my system doesn't get used to it. But occasionally, I take ibuprofen. We all have to decide what's good for us individually. Whichever you choose to go for, I pray it works well for you. Wish you all the very best

Hi there. I’ve been on all three (separately) and found gabapentin the best one for me. Amitriptyline didn’t help me at all and as for pregabalin, it just turned me into a zombie. I couldn’t feel the pain anymore, but I also couldn’t move much or speak properly… I had so many people on here recommend I come off it asap too, as the side effects of coming off it are just horrible withdrawal symptoms (aches, sweats, nausea)…

Typically, a GP would start on amitriptyline, then progress to gabapentin next and save pregabalin as a last resort.

Whichever you do try first, do give it a few weeks - there are side effects to taking any of them, such as tiredness and some nausea etc, but you do get over those after a couple of weeks if it’s the right one for you.

Good luck 💙
