Amitriptyline and pregabalin

Hi all,

I am starting to come off of Pregabalin as I feel like it hasn't done too much to help other than give me bad side effects. The doctor prescribed me Amitriptyline today, my mum has said it really helps her so thought great. However, I was wondering if any one knows if you can take these together?

Also, I am on the pill (Rigevidon) and I read that you shouldn't take that with Amitriptyline?

Any advice? Thank you in advance!

Hun I would fone the surgery and just ask that question because normally when a gp prescribes a med it flags up in big red letters what is isnt compatable with. Amitrip will help you sleep, if you havnt been advised its best to take it around 6pm so that by bedtime its kicked in UNLESS you are going to drive, then wait until you get home, the sooner you take it the better your sleep should be and you should wake without feeling groggy. Pregab and gabapent are not for evryone I looked like I had been in a fire when i tried them!!

Thank you for your advice! I will give my GP a call, I just would like to try it now so I can have a decent sleep for once! I have heard a lot of good and bad things about pregabalin and gabapentin and my gp was very happy about me wanting to come off of it! But thank you for replying ☺️

What are the best drugs

we all differ hun- could you say where fibro affects you the worst?? mine is legs and arm tops, for which I do weekly hydrotherapy and I take Tramadol 50 with 2 paracets 4 times day although at the moment I have reduced to 3 whilst pain is managebale (it never goes completely) that gives me leeway to increase if I have a flare ( and I prob will as I am pottering in the garden) my lower back hurts a lot in the muscles but I am hoping that will subside when the spinal doc injects my cocxy area later next month in the meantime I have Voltarol PLasters (not heatpads) from Boots you can sleep in these, they help a lot.

I would ring your doctors or ask at the chemist about that.

Can't see your doctor giving you something you should take with your medication your already taking.

I came off both gabbapentin and nortriptyline and now take slow release longtec much better.

Bet care ask first

I would definately check with your GP and/or pharmacist, but if it is any help last year when I had severe post herpetic neuralgia I was on pregabalin and amitriptyline (which was soon swapped to nortriptyline) along with tramadol, I was also on the pill (cerazette).

Oh really, and did you find it okay being on both of them? I will definitely check with my doctor though!

I had no problem being on both and the two drugs really helped with the neuralgia, I then had the nerve cut (ablation) that was causing the neuralgia, this worked but it was then that fibro reared its ugly head. I tried gabapentin and pregabalin but they didn't help with the fibro pain at all, so now I take 25mg of nortriptyline at night and slow release tramadol along with paracetamol as and when I need it. I have also found capsaicin cream to be very helpful.

Ah I'm glad that helps you! Fibro pain is just doing my head in at the moment and pregabalin just isn't doing it for me! Thank you for your help, hope you stay well!

i often find that when i have questions about medication, my local chemist tells me far more than my GP .... they can check for any interactions etc; and also advise best time of day to take meds if they are best not taken together etc. xxx

I've luckily moved to a nicer area with a very nice chemist, so think it's best to give him a call! Thank you for your advice xx

I have been on Pregabalin (Lyrica) & Amitriptyline for over 10 years. My distressing pain is under control for the first time in ages! I was on Gabapentine for a short while bu soon went back to Pregabalin.

When I was coming off pregabalin I took amitriptyline as well but only when I was down to 50 mg pregabalin a day and started on 10 mg amitriptyline then upped my amitriptyline to 20 mg

I have just started taking Amitriptyline and down to about 100mg Pregabalin a day, my gp said this was okay. So I'm praying it helps! How did you find the mix of the two together?

Kingsley09 profile image

Hi I gradually reduced the pregabalin and upped the amitriptyline to 20 mg from 10 mg as I didn’t like the side effects of pregabalin and what I’d learnt about the long time effects and my only problem with amitriptyline is I can’t up it anymore because I have afib and it can affect your heart rate but it was ok when I mixed them for a while just hope coming off of pregabalin side effects are not to bad mine wasn’t to bad

Oh thats annoying you can't up it any more! At the moment coming off of Pregabalin hasn't been too bad, although the fatigue is getting bad again! Thank you for replying
