Had a tia (mini stroke) last weekend

So the weekend before last I went numb down the left side of my leg. Having fibro meant that no alarm bells rang immediately. It got worse and spread to my arm neck and back of the head and my speech was slightly slurry. 111 sent out a paramedic and they did routine checks and took me to the hospital where I had to wait for 4 hours to see a doctor who said I’d had a tia. Gave me aspirin and sent me home. Last Thursday went for a full check over and there is no sign of damage to my brain at all. The doctors spoke to me for sometime and the conclusion was that it may have been a trapped nerve or possibly a new symptom of the Fibromyalgia. Just changed my doctors and this new doctor has just put me back a week by telling me that that doesn’t mean I haven’t had a tia. As it is only a full stroke where damage has been caused to the brain. Confused and baffled now. He’s put me back on a drug called Clopidogrel which must be similar to aspirin. Has anyone had any of these symptoms or been through similar situations? Does anyone get total numbness as part of there fibro?

Much kudos to all sufferers.

I've had a full stroke. Was on clop and statins but don't have to take them now. That's because I know what the cause is.

I'd be asking for a second opinion.

To be honest I actually thought I'd had a stroke 5 years ago when my symptoms suddenly worsened. I had already been suffering chronic headaches when I had one particular episode one day where I just felt really strange and afterwards I had numbness down my left side as well as some tremors. My balance, sight and co-ordination were all affected and I had trouble focusing. A scan revealed no damage to brain so Neuroligist assured me I had not had a stroke. She also examined me and did various co-ordination tests. This was all pre-fibro diagnosis and in the end i was told it was probably some weird form of migraine. I tried all kind of migraine meds but none worked and it was only when my GP prescribed beta-blockers (Propranolol) that most of these symptoms eased. However I still continued to have other symptoms (pain in various parts and tinnitus to name a few) and it wasn't until last year that I was finally diagnosed with fibro. I'm assuming you had a full check up in hospital? Was it your GP who said you may well have had a TIA still and put you on Clopidogrel - if so do you know if he has done this on a recommendation from the hospital? Have you seen a copy of any letter sent from hospital to GP as I've found they often put stuff in these that were not mentioned or you might have missed at your consultation. I would go back to your GP initially and explain that you are confused and need clarification. Good luck hun and take care. x

Hey Ramjets, thank you for your mail. It does sound like you had a tia. All sounds very similar to what I’ve been through. I haven’t seen any letters no. I changed doctors on my families advice just after the tia which means I haven’t seen anything. It was the doctors at the hospital that lead me to believe I hadn’t had a tia and this doctor who doesn’t have this information yet has informed me I may well have had a tia because often there is no damage to the brain after a tia. It is only a proper stroke where there is damage. I’m taking from this after talking to you guys and my family to just wait until this doctor has all the information. Doctors drive me crazy. Telling me I’ve had this and that with little thought of how that information will affect me or my loved ones. I hope you are good and not having these symptoms anymore? I’m on propanalol too for migraines. They work very well for my symptoms.

Much kudos

There all TIA's it's only when last longer become a stroke or heart attack for that matter as it's a clot/clots that form for some reason(mine was being on Testosterone HRT)normally the clots pass/break up/dissolve but if they don't they get's lodged where they are then block so blood can't pass then become a stroke.

With mine ive had small finger side of left hand clenchs when i walk sometime can be lower arm on that side sort of stays at odd angle like frozen more when im pushing it more when walking.

im different now with people can be very abrupt&snappy and once had enough that's it plus just don't want to be around people often as find too much.

Memory issues like reading a book with pages missing as short term is poor often but also long can be and ive Asperger's so very methodical with things could have put something somewhere say 15 years ago and could tell you to the point&which way up i left it! along with could see something in your house just a glance of it then you could ask me ages later and i'd tell you.

Remember some bits but much don't now just a blank.

word search puzzles i could see the words as looked at it for ages couldn't do them at all but even now 3.5 years later one is enough or brain is fried as just an overload

So with a stroke just like Fibro you can't always see it from looking at someone as depends on what part of the brain is effected.

Hi Enki I do get numbness but not like yours, yes it could have been a TIA my Mum used to have them sometimes they don't last long and don't show up as they do not harm your brain, its a warning to take things easy, so do take care if was very good your new Dr to warn you, as we put to much down to oh its only another fibro condition better to be forewarned without alarming you, if your speech slurs or face falls and you can't laugh or raise your arm get someone to phone straight away. take care hopefully these tablets will help.

Love & Hugs

I had an MRI on my brain a few months ago to rule out MS and the neurologist said it showed I had suffered a TIA. I am now on statins and aspirin and blood pressure tablets.
