Headaches no GP or A&E can tell me the cause

I have had headaches coming up to 5 weeks without any break. Spoken to 3 different GP's just got more perceptions of painkillers and sent home went to A&E last night and they gave me one suppository pain killer and sent me home at 1.40am. 😡

Also my sleep is very affected.

Feeling sad with NHS at the moment as no one can tell me the reason for my headaches.

I asked could they tell me what the cause was for my headaches and they said that they couldn't.

None off the pain killers are touching my headaches.

Looks like I will have to go private again to see a specialist to see if he can help with the pain and tell me the reason for my headaches. I am not a person that ever suffers with headaches so I am getting really worried as to the cause off them.

Hi Jan, I was the same as I was having chronic headaches daily and no meds were touching it. My GP eventually referred me for a CT scan which came back negative. I was told it must be some form of migraine as I was having other symptoms such as tremors and some vision issues. However no migraine meds worked either. GP finally prescribed Propranolol which is a beta-blocker and that's been the only thing that has eased the pain, although it took some trial and error to get the correct dose. I have never found out what's causing them so have just assumed it is another symptom of my fibro as they are common amongst sufferers. A lot of things can cause headaches from stress to back and/or neck problems but I'm assuming the GPs have asked you the relevant lifestyle questions etc to rule out the common causes. Has a CT or MRI scan been mentioned by any doctors? It could be the type of headaches you are having don't warrant these so be cautious about going private as they can cost around £1000.00. I hope you find some relief soon hun as I know how debilitating they can be. x

I knew it's a absolute mystery as why it has appeared from no apparent reason. It could be the Fibro but I would like a answer but I guess I won't get one. The thing is that I never suffer from headaches. I think I will ask my GP for Protanolol to see if that will help me. I have also heard of a injections that they can give and it's supposed to be very good. I will hold off for a bit about going private to see what else they might do for me. I am lucky as I do have health insurance. It's so deliberating as you really can't do anything. My GP has asked all the questions and done blood tests but they all came back clear.

I know that you can sympathise with me I should have also had the horrendous headaches.

i would see your GP and get a referral for a CT or MRI scan.I have not had headaches but do get persistent headpain in my temples and dismissed by GP's as "just having a headache".I told them i would not waste my time or theirs going to a GP for a normal headache and that this was a different kind of pain.

Just a thought-have you seen an optician?-they can tell lots from an eye exam.

Like you the just put it down to a headache 🤕.

I went and had my eyesight tested and my eyes where find and I also ordered some new glasses. I also went to the dentist as I have just had some treatment done and thought that my bite might be out but that was also fine. They never referred me for a CT scan or MRI either.

So now I am going to ask my GP for a referral to see a specialist as this is so deliberating and I have no quality of life. It really awful that some GP just keep throwing out prescriptions at you in the hope that it sorts thing. The amount off pain killers I had was ridiculous.

I hope that your headaches has got better. Could you please tell me did you find out what the problem was?

Hi Jan

Have you considered they might be sinus headaches.Haven't experienced that myself, but I believe they are often mistaken for migraines, though your gp has maybe already checked for that. Hope you get some relief from it soon.

Hi, I can certainly sympathise as I used to get a lot of headaches from 2 causes.

First was because I am light sensitive. I now have photochromatic lenses - basically the reaction lenses that go dark when you go outside. They do this even on relatively dull cloudy days and even when inside if I'm by a window. I only use lamps in the house as indoor lighting can set me off too. Perhaps you could try wearing sunglasses for a few days, inside and outside, even if its not that bright. Might help? Those headaches have stopped for me thank goodness.

Secondly headaches from my neck and I still get these. It kinda starts in my shoulders, up my neck and into the back of my head where it can also spasm. Painkillers don't touch that one and I have to lie on a hot water bottle or stick on a heat patch right at the base of my skull. I find I hunch my shoulders quite a lot and I think this is the reason for this pain although I can't fully explain it. Usually gets me a lot when the weather starts to turn chillier and I have to conciously stop myself hunching. Today is the 11th day on the trot I've had it this time round. I think my pillows set me off sometimes too - if I'm lying on them not quite right?

Anyhoo, don't know if either of these are similar to your problem. Certainly hope you figure it out as it's no fun and makes it hard to function.

Hi love thank you for your great reply. I have tried nearly everything I can think off but will definitely try the sun glasses around the house to see if that can help me. Maybe see if you can drop painkillers n see if they are now the cause? Hopefully you trust you are well checked over n nothing serious is causing your pain. Rebound headaches and meds induced headaches are a nuisance and most unpleasant. It may just be fibromyalgia?

Have you tried acupuncture or a chiropractor. I get severe headaches when my neck is out of line . Might help
