Hello all, yesterday I went to the dentist very nervous and hyped dentist was very understand. Anyway, I needed a filling on the back molar so he said I will just numb you up (hate the injection) after he kept on saying can you feel your bottom lip going a bit numb, well I couldn't but was so strung up with anxiety could hardly think so we waited longer. In the end I said to him why don't you start and I will raise my hand if I feel pain. Got through till near the end then I felt him close to the nerve and he stopped. So here it is after when it was all done I noticed that I was speaking ok and that I was not numb at all !!!! I said to him look I am not numb ! his answer was sometimes it happens with the back lower teeth. At this point I just wanted to get out. After thinking about it all this was a private dentist , also what I want to know all the stuff he injected in my gum where did it go ?....has worried me for the future.

Eek sounds like one of the nightmares I have had in the past! It's possible the dentist just didn't do it properly and he didn't want to admit it. However when someone is highly stressed or anxious, a local anaesthetic may not work as well as when you’re relaxed. I think it is something to do with the surge of adrenaline you produce when anxious but don't quote me on that. I remember years ago I had to have the camera down my throat and I was a right nervous ninny so the nurse gave me a sedative to calm me. However I was so anxious and wound up it didn't work and it only kicked in after the procedure was over. The doctor was trying to talk to me and I just passed out lol. I wouldn't fret too much about where the injected fluid has gone, but maybe you can discuss your anxiety with your dentist and he may be able to come up with some way to help ease this in the future. I hope you feel better soon, take care lovely xxx

Good look on your journey

Sorry you were in pain at the dentist, I was wondering if you got any problems with hypermobility at all? Its quite a common symptom for people with hypermobility or Ehlers Danlos that local anesthetics don't work sufficiently, it's something to do with the faulty collagen we have (injections go into the collagen). I have secondary Fibro (related to EDS) and the numbing at the dentist does not work for me too. It's worth having a google about it

Hope you are having a better day today

I'm an ex dental assistant and can assure you it's not unusual for locals to not work very well. The dentist is going in blind with the needle, obviously he/she knows where the nerves run but hitting that nerve exactly cannot be 100% guaranteed, it can take a couple of injections to get full anaesthesia. It's not the dentists fault, he hasn't done anything wrong, it just happens.

I'm lucky enough to have never had a dental anaesthetic, although I have had many fillings. I am unusual in still having all my own teeth at the age of 69.

Must admit that dentists have not loomed large in my life lately, as I can't afford even NHS fees, but am lucky that my teeth are strong.

I take the view that as long as my teeth don't give me trouble I won't inflict the dentist on them!
