Morning all,

Well I'm off to the dreaded dentist today for this broken tooth fixed. Between my TMJ and fibromyalgia with anxiety in the mix I'm not looking forward to it! Thankfully my sister is coming with me. I'm hoping for no adverse reaction to the injection this time.

Hope everyone one is as well as they can be.

What was the advese reaction

My hands clenched into fists and I couldn't open them and so did my toes. I hand pins and needles in my arms and legs and was dizzy and sick. It was really frightening. I had never had a problem before.

The clenched hands and feet lasted about 20 mins but I was sick for the rest of the day.

Oh, that's awful . Was it down to panic or something else

They think it was something to do with the adrenaline. But when I've had the injection without the adrenaline I've still been so sick but not the hand and feet thing but still really awful to deal with. I definitely panic about the dentist now but I didn't until this happened.

I am sorry to hear about the problem with dental treatment. I have been having massage which seemed to just give temporary relief but realised after a year of twice monthly that I could tolerate longer without having to signal to the dentist to stop doing dentistry as I couldn't keep my mouth open any longer. Also helps to have something to clutch so you aren't digging nails into palms.

Few days after doctor said 'absolutely nothing wrong with you it's all psychological' in 1979, the dentist said that I had impacted wisdom teeth but my TMJ didn't improve after I had them out.

Best wishes

Mary

Depending on what is wrong with your TMJ have you tried a couple of releases? If only a tension thing then releases the neck can help:

lie down with head supported so that spine is in alignment; turn head as far to the left as is comfortable. Place right hand against right side of face. Inhale whilst turning head to middle position against 50% resistance from right hand. Exhale whilst turning the head from middle position to the right against a 50% resistance from your hand. Stop. Place left hand against left side of face and while inhaling turn head to middle position with 50% resistance from hand; exhale continuing the movement and resistance until head is turned to the left to a comfortable position. Repeat a couple of times and then increase resistance from hand to 75%. Always review how your neck feels and stop if it is uncomfortable. This exercise should never hurt. Repeat 5/6 times several times a day. You should find that you can turn your head more easily from side to side and turn further over the shoulder. This exercise releases the SCM. (I am giving these notes as guidance without any liability as I am not in a position to review medical conditions or asses physical restrictions as I would do when treating a client.)

For TMJ release:

place hands either side of face; left hand to left side of face and right hand to right side of face. Put right forefinger into dip next to TMJ below ear lobe on right side; place left forefinger into dip next to TMJ below ear lobe on left side of face. When opening and closing your mouth you will feel the movement in the dip. Open your mouth wide. Put tongue against lower teeth and breath normally. Keeping mouth open at all times press fingers into depression. Press and hold for as long as able (not overlong). Repeat daily. This may be excruciatingly painful if the TMJ is really tight. (I know this as it hurts me on occasion.)Always keep your mouth open when doing this exercise. However by repeating this exercise the muscles around the TMJ will ease and your jaw should open and close more easily and your neck feel less tense. (I am giving these notes as guidance without any liability as I am not in a position to review medical conditions or asses physical restrictions as I would do when treating a client.)

Good luck.
