Finally decided to go to the GP to speak to the about the possibility of having Fybromyalgia. I have had a pretty awful week no sleep. Night sweats and unexplained pain. Sat down and explained how I have been feeling and did they think Fibromyalgia was a possibility. His first comment was due to my complicated medical history I should always try and see my named GP unless it was urgent. Felt really positive after that comment !. Anyway despite that I asked them if they felt that Fibromyalgia was a possibility. The answer was it's not really a medical condition you can't treat it with a pill or anything. It's a bit like the ME fashion years ago. Giving my problems a name won't help. ,!!! He thinks it is probably stress and depression. Could give me a few days offf work if I thought it would help. I don't think he got the " I'm depressed because I feel like s**t tired and in pain not I'm in pain because I'm depressed. Not really sure where that leaves me other than I am a stressed depressed hypochondriac with a vivid imagination!

Hi Sherrill, I'm sorry that things are not good for you. It sounds as if that Gp needs to improve his bedside manner. Would it be worth you seeing your named Gp?

Hello Sherrill. whenever I have prolonged pain in a certain part of my body go to doctor and he sends me for scan or exray for that part of body, that is usually first stage of me getting help, if they find anything. At one point I had a full body scan and that is when I was diagnosed with fibromalgia. Hope this helps x

The problem with asking a doctor if you have a certain illness, on the whole, does not go down very well.

Doctors generally do not like patients diagnosing themselves.

Having said that, there was no need for the doctor to speak to you like that.

Getting a definitive diagnosis of Fibromyalgia can, unfortunately, take many years.

There are other conditions that have very similar symptoms to Fibromyalgia, such as Lupus & Lyme Disease and it is important that these conditions are ruled out first.

Perhaps it may be a good idea for you to make an appointment with your own doctor (although you do not have to see your named doctor) and ask if you can have a referral to see a Rheumatologist?

It would be a good idea to take someone with you to your appointment, such as a family member or friend, for moral support.

Take with you a list of your symptoms and stress that you are depressed because you are in pain and not the other way around.

It is also a good idea to start keeping a pain diary. All you need to do is to write down for a couple of weeks what pain you have had and where each day. This then gives your doctor something concrete to work on.

I think we need to educate these guys!

It may be an idea to ring your practice manager or receptionist to find out which doctor in your surgery has an interest in rheumatic conditions, and make any future appointments with him/her.

I'm so sorry you were met with this awful attitude, do see another GP, I had a similar response many years ago and left mid consultation and complained very loudly. I now have excellent care and would not tolerate anything less. The GP you saw needs extra information and as has been suggested get the info pack delivered, I would take it there in person but that's just how I am. Just realised I may come across as demanding but I absolutely will not put up with their nonsense no one should xxx

My experience has been that the younger newly qualified doctors are far more aware of fibromyalgia. My GP is very young,but I would not swap her. Her knowledge on medication is also bang up to date.

Definitely see someone else. Not all doctors are so dismissive x

This is so familiar but I can now say my GP is amazing with me I don't always get to see her but can ring and book a telephone consultation. I did see her yesterday as my weight is going up and I need to becarefull as I'm boarder line diabetic but not able to exercise do to fibro but I do still work.

And come home very tired and in pain.

I'd definitely go and see someone else.

Can we get copies of the GP pack as it may help me with work issues.

Oh gosh Sherrill - That sucked... Nothing like dismissing you out of hand. You need to go to your other GP, so I am presuming that one is nicer. I have zero tolerance for arrogant and / or rude medical folks... Good luck with getting to the right doc..
