Pain in neck and head

Hello Everyone,

I was woken by excruciating pain in my neck which has since moved up into the bottom of my head, so bad I was crying.

All week I've had aches across my shoulders but nothing like the pain in my neck.

I'm on 20mg of amitriptyline which is to increase by 10mg each week until I feel 'side effects' (not really sure what that means) my gp said.

Is this 'normal' pain for fibro? Whatever normal is.

I've only been diagnosed 2 weeks and am still coming to terms with everything and am feeling scared.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Hun- can I ask you if this neck/head pain turn into a migraine?I do get this problem with my neck its stems from the muscles either side that go up into our head in a "V" shape, the blood vessels then shrink or expand and cause horrendous pain... I must tell you that anything "head" should not be ignored as not everything is fibro, we do get other pains and illnesses too. in my case 3 years ago now, my head pain was a sub arachnoid and I am jolly glad my daughter dragged me to A&E or I woudnt have lived to tell the tale!

Thanks for getting back to me.

No headache but the skin on my head feels tight (if this makes sense) like someone has their hand on top of my head and is squeezing it.

Hello Paffette and welcome.....Did your GP know of your head/neck/shoulder pain as if this is new to you I feel you should go back to your GP to get assurance that it is Fibro not a new condition....Hope you get it sorted soon and look forward to hearing more from you....Hug x

Hello Paffette71

All of us here suffer with Fibro and most of us have other conditions too.

I can see that you have had your question answered, but I just wanted to give you some advice.

I have had Fibro & ME for 36 years and been a member of the forum for 5 years.

The majority of people when they are first diagnosed struggle in one way or another.

My best advice to you would be to learn as much about Fibro and how it affects you personally as you possibly can.

If you look on our website you will see a list of the most common symptoms of Fibro fmauk.org

Although we all have Fibro we all suffer very differently from each other.

If you think of it as a sliding scale. At the beginning are people who are able to manage their Fibro symptoms and carry on a relatively normal life. At the far end of the scale are people who are bed/housebound by their Fibro.

In the middle of the scale are people who have "good" days and "bad" days.

I live in severe pain 24/7 and have quite a few other conditions to contend with too. However, I refuse to be beaten by it!

The best thing is not to "fight" the Fibro but that doesn't mean give in to it.

It is scary to begin with. You probably have so many questions and have no idea where to start.

If can get hold of a diary, or even a notebook, and write down your daily symptoms you will probably see a pattern forming.

You can then set about trying to make the symptoms you have more manageable for you.

I really hope that some of this helps. Please do feel free to ask us as many questions as you like. We have the most wonderful group of members with many years experience who will be only too happy to help you.

Please try not to be scared. There is someone around on the forum all the time, so if you need any reassurance just put up a post.

The forum tends to be a little quieter over the weekends.

Wishing you much peace

Lu x

Hi Paffette ... i have pain in my shoulders all the time. I go to a chiropractor to take care of my back and nerves. I use to get vagus nerve pain up the front side of my neck to the top of my head. Very scary and painful. I have not had an incident sinch seeing a chiro weekly for 2 yrs now. It is not a cure, but helpful.

I did wake up last night with that tightness you describe on the top of my head. First time I got a headache like that. I have other inflammatory issues besides Fibro.

I feel better when I come on this site to talk and here what others are going through. Very caring and helpful family.

Hope you can get resolved.

Thanks everyone. I think I just need to keep a diary of events and talk it through with my GP.

Hello Paffette and welcome to our friendly fibro forum where you can get information, advice, help and support.

If you find the pain is not easing, you have a fever or rash then please seek urgent medical help.

Although it does sound like one of the mysterious signs of fibro, you must never take it for granted.

Hope your pain eases off very soon.

Kay

Thanks for your replies. I've developed what seems like tinnitus too today. One thing after another!

Hi Paffette71

I really am so truly sorry to read that you were in so much pain, and I sincerely hope that this pain has eased now? As Hidden suggested, not everyone with a migraine always gets a headache as a result. The word migraine means:

The word "migraine" combines the word "hemicranias" (which means half the head) and megrim, which in the 18th century meant low.

So it is possible that you had some kind of migraine? Many of the members on the forum experience them as a usual symptom of their Fibro. I would definitely get it checked out my friend as it is a new symptom, just to have other medical conditions ruled out of the equation. I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck and please take care of yourself my friend.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken
