Flupertine

Hi to all thinking about trying flupertine as I have exhausted all other options medication wise and nothing helps.I appreciate it is only available in the UK on private prescription through the London Pain Clinic. Wondered if anyone else had tried it and if so did it help.also have gynaecological pain that seems to be linked to fibromyalgia. Was diagnosed in 2009 following a road traffic accident and whiplash

I must admit I had not heard of this drug so I looked it up and found it actually on an older post within FMAUK, here is the link if anyone wants more information.

Since this is an old post, I am wondering why we have not heard more about this drug recently. Perhaps it is too expensive for the NHS which is why you have to pay a private prescription.

I would be very interested in the results of any of our members who have tried it.

My own feeling is that if you can afford it to try this out then it would be worth it, especially if it works for you. Please let us know how you get on.

I am sorry to hear that your pain is so severe. I can truly empathise with you as I also have constant severe pain.

I have never heard of this drug before and so like our lovely Kay bluebell99 I looked it up too.

As far as I can see it looks as though it is an extremely expensive drug and so I am guessing that is why it is not on prescription in the UK.

From the little I have read it does say that it is a good medication for people suffering with Fibromyalgia, who are suffering with moderate to severe pain.

I can't say that I have thought of gynaecological problems being associated with Fibro before, but of course that is not to say it isn't.

Please would you let us know how you get on with Flupirtine if you do decide to pay for a private prescription? I am desperate to find something myself to give me some respite from the constant severe pain that even wakes me at night.

welcome to our wonderful forum ☺ I'm sure you will come to find the forum invaluable in chatting to others who are going through the same experience as you, talking to others at different stages of their lives with Fibro and learning from their experiences.

It does help with the whole process and I wish I had found the site years ago. I have had Fibro for nearly 30 yrs and I'm still learning about it, like we all are.

I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today? Welcome to the forum and it is wonderful to make your acquaintance. I have pasted you an excerpt from *Google below about the dangers of Flupertine, and an alternative that you could talk to your doctor about:

*Flupirtine is an aminopyridine that functions as a centrally acting non-opioid analgesic that was originally used as an analgesic for acute and chronic pain but in 2013 due to issues with liver toxicity, the European Medicines Agency restricted its use to acute pain, for no more than two weeks, and only for people who cannot use other painkillers.

There is another non-opioid analgesic called Nefopam which has less side effects. I have pasted a **Google excerpt below on this drug also. This is available on prescription from your doctor and may be worth discussing with them:

**Nefopam (brand names: Acupan, Silentan, Nefadol and Ajan) is a centrally-acting non-opioid analgesic drug of the benzoxazocine chemical class which was developed by Riker Laboratories in the 1960s. It is widely used, mainly in European countries, for the relief of moderate to severe pain as an alternative to opioid analgesic drugs. Animal studies have shown that nefopam has a potentiating (analgesic-sparing) effect on morphine and other opioids by broadening the antinociceptive action of the opioid and possibly other mechanisms, generally lowering the dose requirements of both when they are used concomitantly.
