Strange occurrence with me last week

Hello, i just wondered if anyone can help me. If you have seen my posts before i a currently being diagnosed with fibro i struggle daily with my severe pain but i still work full time and love to exercise and i believe this keeps me supple yet makes the fatigue worse.

Last Wednesday i had a funny turn while driving home from work, i was rushed to hospital as i had stroke like symptoms. I couldn't speak as my speech was slurred, my left side was numb and tingling, i felt weak i had a severe sharp pain in the front of my head and my eyesight had gone blurred i also felt like i wasn't with it, like someone had picked me up and put me somewhere i didn't know, i couldn't judge my space or get a grip of hat i was doing.

The hospital did a CT scan to check for a bleed on my brain, thankfully this was clear. They then did a lumber puncture (4 times as they couldn't get any fluid) to also check for a bleed, again this was negative. After 24 hours my symptoms had completely gone, i was just left very sore from the LP (and still am extremely sore with a banging headache!!!) but all other traces of what happened had gone. The hospital want to check for a blood clot to make sure i don't have any, but the specialist MRI scan i need where they use the dye to see it move around the body was booked up on Thursday and Friday and not in use over the weekend so i was sent home to recover and wait for an outpatients booking to come though in the next few weeks.

I am just wondering if anyone has experienced anything else like this, someone from my boyfriends work has fibro and has the same odd occurrence a few times before. If anyone has can you let me know your story please, this could give me alot of relief.

Thank you xx

That must have been horrifying. And still waiting. I'm sorry.

I have not had this happen to me. But if it is common in fibro I would like to hear other people's occurrences.

I'm sending hugs and support your way.

Let us know how it goes.

Hope you are recovering well.

I have only heard it from this other person so i am interested if it has happened before

Thank you xxx

Hi

I'm sorry that you had to go through all of that.

I did find when I was fighting the fibro and trying to live my Narmada life, that I too had stroke like symptoms and had an ambulance called etc.

My left arm and side of my body would not work, at all, for a few hours.

This happened a few times.

I also at one time sat in a chair and was repeating the same phrase over and over for abou 4 hrs, with my eyes open. I had been in a lot of pain and had. A migraine, but kept going on, before this happened. Again an ambulance was called as no one could communicate with me, when I did come too, I was surprised and confused to see everyone around me etc. I was very upset because I couldn't remember anything and I was upset because of what I put my family through.

I have since got physical shaking thought my right arm and hand too when I over do things.

I saw a neurologist who told me that basically, my brain could not cope with all the pain signals it was getting, as I was overdoing things and it was shutting down parts of my body because of that.

I now know that I cannot fight fibro and have to work with it not against it. This is why the pain clinic advise you to pace yourself.

I had to stop swimming because I loved it, but couldn't stop myself from overdoing it. I've started again now and I'm much more careful. I do some exercising to help my mobility, but do you overdo the swimming and then use the jacuzzi.

You can stay in work and do exercise, just don't overdo it, listen to your body it's telling you it can't cope well at this time.

I hope that you can adjust and realise that you can still have a good for filling life, just with a few adjustments.

Good luck and take care.

I also struggle with migraines and they said this may be the cause but when I mentioned fibro they said it could be linked but so little is known about fibro that they didn't know.

It comforts me knowing I'm not the only person to have suffered these episodes.

I work full time but have cut down my exercise to ease my body and in the week don't do much and then weekends I take my dog on long walks which at the moment is suiting my body.

Thank you for your help xx

Hi again

I'm glad it's put your mind at rest.

It is very worrying, I too felt very worried. It does sort of make sense though doesn't it. The body is amazing and does cut things off when I can't cope to stop everything going wrong.I think your being sensible and you will soon learn your limits.

Good luck and take care of yourself. 👍😊

That was a seriously scary experience for you. Fibro as we all know can do strange things to us and sometimes I think when we try to do too much and go through the pain threshold our bodies sort if shut down on us. Quite a few of the symptoms you describe sound very much like an extremely severe migraine and they can have very distressing features.

Do hope you get the scan and some answers. Let us know how you are doing.x

That is what they said it could be until I mentioned fibro. Will see what my results say in a few weeks.

Thank you

Hi KatieERoberts

I am so genuinely sorry to read this my friend and my heart truly goes out to you as it must have been completely terrifying! I am so sincerely delighted to read that all of the symptoms for this have now gone!

Now please remember that I am not a doctor but there was something that came to mind as I read your post. There is a condition called, ''Transient ischaemic attack (TIA),'' which is known as a mini stroke but from what I have read it is different to a full stroke. I have pasted you an excerpt and a link below from the *NHS Choices cache on this condition:

Introduction

A transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or "mini stroke" is caused by a temporary disruption in the blood supply to part of the brain.

The disruption in blood supply results in a lack of oxygen to the brain. This can cause sudden symptoms similar to those of a stroke, such as speech and visual disturbance, and numbness or weakness in the face, arms and legs.

However, a TIA does not last as long as a stroke. The effects often only last for a few minutes or hours and fully resolve within 24 hours.

NHS Choices - A transient ischaemic attack (TIA):

I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck, and please take care of yourself.

All my hopes and dreams for you

I believe it was a TIA they were testing me for as my symptoms relieved after a few days.

I will see what my MRI scan comes back as.

Thank you for your help x

I agree with Ken, like him i am not a doctor but this seems to fit a TIA very well. I also cant really add much to Kens excellent post. But i will add my personal experience. TIAs can be extremely mild and following 1 (i have had 3 and completely recovered from all) i felt strange and a few other symptoms but it wasnt until my carer came that i realised i had a speech problem. I hope you get the issue resolved.

Yes i do believe it was a TIA but the hospital have yet to found any blot clot or bleed that would have caused this brief moment of stroke like symptoms. Thank you for your help xx

Leonwp in reply to KatieERoberts

Katie i think its unlikely to be a bleed it could have easily been a small clot or lightly formed one that passed through a narrow arterial path and disipated completely naturally and was gone and therefore cant be found and you have a good chance that could have taken an age to get to that stage and it may never happen again. That is exactly what they told me after the 2nd one and 3rd was so minor i didnt even bother going back as i am on Statins and aspirin anyway.

KatieERoberts profile image
KatieERoberts in reply to Leonwp

They ruled the bleed out straight away but i am awaiting an MRI so they can check for a clot, they don't seem to be rushing about it because my symptoms have gone apart from a dull headache from the lumber puncture. Either this or its linked to fibro and my body is undergoing alot of stress so it shut down other parts, this is what a doctor said it could be xx

Hi Leonwp, I am so genuinely sorry to read that you have suffered 3 TIA's, and I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck, and please take care of yourself.

Hello KatieE from Nurse Gladys Emanuel (open all hours) Yes- I had a similar experience on 2014, I had a severe headache, the day before I had driven 60 miles-stopping en route- I started to lose my vision and vomit madly, I went to A&E and went thru the same as you only I had a clumsy doctor who contaminated the lumber puncture with blood and I was taken miles away from home to a neurology surgeon, a head dye test was done and an infusion to rid me of the awful head pain, nothing was found ( well I always said I have nothing between my ears), I stayed there for 9 days and my fibro really got bad staying in bed all that time, I complained and was seen by a neuro specialist who stopped me using anti epileptic drugs as "unsuitable". It turned out to be the muscles at the back of my neck had really tightened causing the head pain- fibro related it was chalked up to!!

Yes its interesting how we all have had the same symptoms and also have fibro. I have an MRI booked in for this week a dye one so we will see what that says. I do believe its linked to my fibro rather than anything sinister.

Thank you for your help x

I have had exactly same symptoms as this and my gp came out to see me and sent me to stroke unit, where I stayed for a while until tests completed. I did not have a stroke or blood clot, turned out to be a hemiplegic migraine (I had never heard of it). This causes temporary paralysis, one sided weakness, mine was left side too, pain in head, affects eyes, balance and understanding. I felt very weak and tired for a while after getting out of hospital and still have a weaker left side compared to right but it is not obvious. Other than that it is business as usual for me. All the best

I used to get those symptoms with a migraine. Completely lost my vision once. Since the symptoms mimic a stroke, it is always wise to get to the hospital to make sure.
