Hi Lyzzie,

My wife was diagnosed with this back in 2000, having been referred to the Hammersmith Hospital and Professor Haskard.

Our local kidney professor Dr Nichols had created a hand picked team of specialists in our local hospital here in Exeter, Devon, who each ran their tests and reported back to him. Every test was clear, apart from one !

My wife's urine looked like thin magnolia paint, full of little platelet type things. So it was no surprise that the urologist made the first breakthrough. My wife was suffering from Chyluria.

A common problem in the Far East where it is caused by a little buglet called Filiarossis that somehow gets into the lymph system, and then damages the valve between the lymph system and the kidneys. But, my wife had never been further than northern France into Belgium, researching the Somme battle grounds and others.

The referral was because she fitted some of the symptoms of Betchets Desease, and the Hammersmith were specialists at confirming diagnosis. After a battery of test, including one where they injected an atomic syrum into her her, Betchets was not the problem.

So Proff Hadkard diagnosed Sero Negative Arthritis, which covers some 235 forms of arthritis, where they dont match any of the documented forms.

So, you are special, deserve the best treatment, and might like to mention the Hammersmith and the work of Proff Haskard and his team into Sero Negative Arthritis.

Happy to answer questions here or by pp, leave you to choose which.

Oh, by the way, our lovely Dr Nichols has retired, and we know his replacement through social connections. He commented after my wife had described her condition, that he had seen the photo of her urine sample in a new text book, along with the photo the urologist had got of her leaking valve.

There are only 20 or so cases of Chyluria in the UK not caused by the Far Easten buglet.

Sorry it's so long, but there was a lot to explain and help you with your diagnosis.

thankyou, I only came to know about the diagnosis as my Doctor and I were having one of our check up discussions, and I mentioned the sjogrens, and fibro etc., and said that half the time I didnt know whether I was coming or going because each consultant I saw said something different and would he kindly tell me if I was a roaring hypchondriac or what exactly WAS wrong, thats when he said you have Sero-negative arthritis, I thought he was saying Zero, not Sero, and just dismissed the whole thing as though he were saying Your bones are useless, I didnt realise it was a 'proper' illness. What does it do? what does it attack? is it still like saying you have such a plethora of auto-immune problems we lump it all under one name? Am I mistaken in reading some where it can effect the thickness of your blood? Im sure you can tell by my post that Im totally confused, I do go to see my Doctor on Friday and I think I need to have a long chat with him, and ask for an explanations that I can understand, actually I better being able to read about these things, it sinks in better. Thank you so much for replying. All the best to you and of course your wife. Lyzzie :)

Hi lyzzie

I am so genuinely sorry to read that you have been given this diagnosis, and I have pasted for you below an excerpt and link to the *National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society cache on this issue:

Seropositive & seronegative

Introduction

The diagnosis of any disease usually progresses along a well defined path that has three parts: a history of the complaint, blood tests and, usually, imaging (x-rays or scans). "Seropositive/seronegative" is a term that refers to the results of a blood test.

What is seropositive/seronegative?

The blood test that is ordered by the doctor in order to help establish the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is looking for the presence of two proteins in the blood. One of them is called rheumatoid factor (RF). This is a very old but tried and tested investigation that was first introduced into rheumatology in the 1940s. The other test is called anti-CCP and is more recent. Anti-CCP is more sensitive than RF and may appear much earlier in the course of RA.

I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck, and please take care of yourself.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Thanks for taking the trouble to find that out ken, but why do I have all these wretched things? I've had arthritis since I was a child, but had Septic Arthritis twice, once aged 8 and once aged 15, the second time there were mutterings about losing the right leg but the Pencillin worked I was in hospital for nearly 3 months, I even took my 'o' levels in there, and had to report back to them the results!!, my point is, do all these different types of Auto-immune problems & so on stem from that Septic-arthritis? I know you cant make a diagnosis or such but would be interested in your and anyone elses opinion on the matter. Lyzzie :) oh, by the way, still fighting to do my grocery shopping, I had to threaten T that I would go to S if it didnt do as it was told, perhaps it does think you should be shopping at 4am!!, finally got it to allow me to pay about an hour ago, and yes, new supply of ice cream coming!!..and some Bourbons, which were your fault for reminding me that I liked them!!. Lyzzie :)

It is a really difficult one my friend? I can imagine that with most medical conditions there is an inter-connective line? As one things goes wrong there is something akin to a domino affect? Probably more so with auto-immune conditions?

I shall hang around outside your house waiting for the bourbons to arrive! Mind you, I have had some lactose free coconut ice cream in the freezer for a while and with this heat I simply cannot be bothered to eat it! Not been too bothered about food at all the last few days but I have guzzled some tea back!

Take care my friend

Ken :)

Hi Lyzzie,

Sero Negative Arthritis (SNA) that my wife has, may well differ from that others have, so no reading into this below that you will be the same.

My wife's form affects where ligaments and muscle are attached to the bones. As the syndrome has developed, it has slowly moved around the body finding new places to connect to, and pulling on the little hooks is has left behind in others. Normal X-rays can't show this, hence the special atomic X-ray at the Hammersmith.

Having allowed 48yrs for the injection to spread right around her body, she spent 2hrs flat on a moving bed base that slowly moved her through a scanning machine. Due to its low speed, the X-ray develops as each part of her passed the scan reader. Gradually, her blood system started showing up on the screen, plus the locations where ligaments joined bones.

Every now and then, a red spot would appear on the screen, and on checking with my wife, she could confirm that this was where she had a very painful point. Sometimes she would get pain from a point for a few days, sometimes weeks, there is no way of forecasting. Compared to me, she can live a fairly full life, no real movement restrictions, fairly constant pain levels and locations, and sjorgrens syndrome dry eyes.

Remember I said everyone is different, so the above may be quite different from how yours develops. Do discuss with your GP, write your questions down so you don't miss any, check the link Ken has kindly provided, put SNA into Google, find out as much as you can before hand, so your questions are really pertinent to you.

Take a spare copy of your questions with you, so if your GP says they haven't the time to answer them all, you can give them the copy and ask them to find out and reply to you.

Take care, and let us know how Friday goes, may. Be able to explain a bit more what your GPs answers mean.

Virtual huglets, Hayesider.
