Hi everyone,

Two weeks ago I went to see my gp who told me that my blood sugar was high. He said it is a sign for diabetes but to do a 2nd blood test to make sure. So I had the 2nd blood test taken on 20th May and then got the results last Tuesday. I went to see him and he told me that yes I do have diabetes. It's type 2 and he put me on medication and I've made an appointment to see the diabetic nurse on 7th June. I was completely and utterly shocked due to 3 things.

1) there is no family history of diabetes in my family at all

2) I had no signs for diabetes at all. I'm not thirsty at all. I always have water with me, because my throat gets dry quickly and it's due to my fibro or ME I can't remember which.

3) You can get diabetes at ant time at all. I actually found out because I had had a blood test for something else and was going for the results of that at the time that I was diagnosed.

I was astounded to be honest and really scared. I said to him "I wasn't being tested for diabetes so how did you find out?" He just said it came up with the results of the other one. So I'm now on more medication which is making my tablet container very full.

Has anyone else been diagnosed with diabetes without warning? Without knowing you had it? Whilst being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia? I'd love to hear from you. I'm still trying to absorb the facts and the change to my life. It's not the end of the world, I understand that, but I am now wondering what else I may develop even further down the line. I'd love to know that there are others like me living with Fibro, living with ME, living with a nerve condition that affects your whole body and then are now living with type 2 diabetes. It would be nice to know that I'm not alone.

Thank you

Kimberley

My husband was diagnosed last year with Type 2 but he had been prewarned that he prediabetic some 18 months before when a blood test for something else showed problems. Unfortunately through circumstances he didn't change his lifestyle and the full diabetes developed.

I went on a one day course with him to learn more about it so I could support him and there were several people there who seemed to me to have the symptoms of fibro from what they were saying but at that time they had not been officially diagnosed but it was something that was being investigated.

It could be now it is being treated that your health may improve as several people I know with it have said they actually feel better now than they did before. Sincerely hope that is the case for you. I know there are quite a few on the forum with diabetes so hopefully you will get tons if replies. Let us know how you are doing.☺

Hi Rose wine, thank you so much for your reply. The doctor told me that I have the insulin going around my body, just not enough or it's going the wrong way, can't remember with my fibro fog. Will et you know how I get on after seeing the nurse next week. ;) x

i think you'll find that your body makes the insulin but the organs that make use of it become saturated with fat cells and you start to resist it .

Hi babebatista,

It was a shock to hear I had type 2 as well. I didn't have a raging thirst, although like you, I always had a dry mouth and carried water. I didn't start on meds, he just said try to alter diet. However, after a lot of research on fibro, hypothyroidism, diet, high cholesterol and high cortsisol, as well as vitamin b12 and D deficiency, I decided a low carb/high fat diet would help. My blood glucose has reduced as I no longer get those sugar fluctuations, my high cholesterol has reduced too. I've also lost weight which is a bonus. This type of diet has been said to reverse type 2 diabetes and tv's Dr Michael Mosley has spoken about it and his book has been a bestseller. I haven't read it, but he talks about how he has reversed his type 2 diabetes by diet. I find dietdoctor.com fantastic, its become my online bible!

It may be useful to read the book and have a look at the website to see if it's something you want to do. Like Dr Mosley, I didn't want to be on meds and now I shouldn't have to! Good luck. :-)

Hi,

Thank you so much for your reply. I also have a B12 deficiency for which I have injections every 3 months. I will have a look at the link you have provided for me. Thank you, I will let you know how I get on. :) xx

i was diagnosed about 8 years ago . within the space of a year 3 of my close family members were diagnosed with it too . the first clues i had it were i started to lose my eyesight , i spent about a month not being able to see more than a foot in front of me , i was told its because high blood glucose levels make your lens swell up , i was put on metformin , given a meter and told to stop eating crap , here i am 8 years later ive had dozens of blood tests and new meds and it's still not under control , even when i eat next to nothing i can't seem to control it so they are trying one last new medication that makes you pee out up to 21 grams of sugar a day . Fingers crossed this will work because my next stop is insulin injections .

Hi, thank you so much for your reply. It is awful isn't it. I'm worried about my eyes because my eyesight hasn't been right since I was 18 and I have a problem with the retina's behind my eyes. I know eyesight can be affected with diabetes. The other thing is I don't have a high blood pressure. I have a very sensitive stomach so as soon as I eat anything that sets it off I have to take it off the list of things that I can eat. I can't eat white bread so I've been having brown bread for at least 2 years. I don't eat pasta and I have a nut allergy. I don't really eat a lot of food. I have a small plate which fills me up enough. I eat loads of salad, fruit and veg. I have lost weight recently but that could be down to the stress of having my superstar mum in law in hospital suffering from a brain injury since 7th Januaury. I have a lot of questions for this nurse on Tuesday. I will let you know how I get on.

Thanks again ;) xx

Hi

Losing weight is one of the symptoms of diabetes, however with supporting your Mother in law it would be difficult to know if it was stress or diabetes causing you to lose weight.

They do say that half of the population are walking around with borderline diabetes and don't even know it.

I come from a family of diabetes when my Mum was first diagnosed 32 years ago we joined a support group which was very helpful.

You should have yearly eye test

And you will be exempt from prescription charges.

Any long term Health condition is a shock and takes some getting your head around.

Best Wishes

Rose

One thing i will say is these days diabetes is an epidemic so support for it has grown immensely , There are tons of specialists out there now , dietitians that will help you work out a diet plan , paula carr clinic that will keep an eye on your eyesight and most dr,s surgerys now have diabetic specialists that will monitor and advise , and of course if you didn't have one before you are now eligible for a medical exemption card , make sure you get and keep that to hand , Its not the end of the world . it's just an inconvenience that can make you feel pants if poorly controlled . , and sensible weight loss can help a hell of a lot if it's early days .best of luck with that.

Hi babebatista

I am so genuinely sorry to read that you have been diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic and I sincerely hope that it can be managed well with your medication. I am always worried about it as Diabetes type 1 is rampant in my family but so far I have been lucky with blood tests. I have also put on a lot of weight due to my prescribed steroids for my COPD, something that could trigger type 2 diabetes for me!

I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck, and please take care of yourself.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken

Like you I was unexpectedly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes which came as a shock as I had no symptoms. I was not convinced about the diagnosis and my friend who is diabetic kept saying there was no way I was - (she kept taking my blood sugar levels just to make her meter readings looking good!) as there were occasions when I actually had extremely low blood sugar levels.

My GP phoned me and asked to get to the surgery ASAP to collect a prescription, I was prescribed Metformin tablets- I didn't take them. I was also sent to eye clinics & to a Podiatrist to have my feet checked and finally, about 18 months later, to the Diabetic Nurse for a check up. She took my bloods and said that my levels were very good in fact they would have to tweak my medication as they were perhaps too good. It was at this point I mentioned that I hadn't been taking the tablets as I was 99.9% convinced that I was not diabetic. She went away and spoke with one of the GPs and the conclusion was that my diagnosis was the correct one and not theirs!!!

Hi Lima, thank you so much for replying to me. I am seeing the diabetic nurse tomorrow morning and I too am not convinced i have it. I have been taking the medication but only one of a morning as they wanted me to start slow and work up. So one a day for one week, Two a day the week after and then increase to three a day for the rest of time, but decided to wait until I've seen the nurse. I will let you know how I get on. Xx
