Hi I was wandering if any knows about pairethriods I know I had not spelt it correct but hope you know what I mean, Four years ago I have four of them removed, was told that we only need one to live on, the ones they I had removed were bad that was all I was told, Do I need to be checked again or is that it. Had a blood test for calcium yesterday, would that show all problems if any.

Sorry to say I don't know what they are. I hope someone can help you.

Best wishes.

You mean parathyroid, if you had all four removed you would be taking calcium and vitd supplements, otherwise you would be experiencing many unpleasant symptoms including seizures. If your test comes back with low calcium, low PTH and high phosphate you need treatment. Hypoparathyroidism is a serious condition.

Parathyroid glands control calcium so are very important.

No nothing to do with thyroid function, they are part of the endocrine system but not connected.

Hi Misty57

I have pasted you an excerpt and a link below from the *U.S. National Library of Medicine relating to Parathyroid Disorders, so I sincerely hope that you find this useful:

nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/par...

Summary

Most people have four pea-sized glands, called parathyroid glands, on the thyroid gland in the neck. Though their names are similar, the thyroid and parathyroid glands are completely different. The parathyroid glands make parathyroid hormone (PTH), which helps your body keep the right balance of calcium and phosphorous.

If your parathyroid glands make too much or too little hormone, it disrupts this balance. If they secrete extra PTH, you have hyperparathyroidism, and your blood calcium rises. In many cases, a benign tumor on a parathyroid gland makes it overactive. Or, the extra hormones can come from enlarged parathyroid glands. Very rarely, the cause is cancer.

If you do not have enough PTH, you have hypoparathyroidism. Your blood will have too little calcium and too much phosphorous. Causes include injury to the glands, endocrine disorders, or genetic conditions. Treatment is aimed at restoring the balance of calcium and phosphorous.

I want to genuinely wish you all the best of luck, and please take care of yourself.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken

No problem my friend. Apparently they are not connected at all despite having similar names and being so close to each other in the body! :)

Your GP should be aware that you had your parathyroid glands removed and should be keeping an eye on things by taking bloods etc.

If you are worried about what effect this has had and if there is anything you should be looking out for then I suggest that you make an appointment with your GP and ask to have it all explained to you. Or ask about it next time you see your GP.

Sorry I can't be of more help. 🐸
