You mean parathyroid, if you had all four removed you would be taking calcium and vitd supplements, otherwise you would be experiencing many unpleasant symptoms including seizures. If your test comes back with low calcium, low PTH and high phosphate you need treatment. Hypoparathyroidism is a serious condition.
I have pasted you an excerpt and a link below from the *U.S. National Library of Medicine relating to Parathyroid Disorders, so I sincerely hope that you find this useful:
Most people have four pea-sized glands, called parathyroid glands, on the thyroid gland in the neck. Though their names are similar, the thyroid and parathyroid glands are completely different. The parathyroid glands make parathyroid hormone (PTH), which helps your body keep the right balance of calcium and phosphorous.
If your parathyroid glands make too much or too little hormone, it disrupts this balance. If they secrete extra PTH, you have hyperparathyroidism, and your blood calcium rises. In many cases, a benign tumor on a parathyroid gland makes it overactive. Or, the extra hormones can come from enlarged parathyroid glands. Very rarely, the cause is cancer.
If you do not have enough PTH, you have hypoparathyroidism. Your blood will have too little calcium and too much phosphorous. Causes include injury to the glands, endocrine disorders, or genetic conditions. Treatment is aimed at restoring the balance of calcium and phosphorous.
I want to genuinely wish you all the best of luck, and please take care of yourself.
Ken, Thanks for printing that site. I have under active thyroid and take 125 mcg. of synthroid and have never heard of the Para thyroid gland. Not sure if any relation but should be interesting read . Thanks off to bed have a good night my friend, Peck
Your GP should be aware that you had your parathyroid glands removed and should be keeping an eye on things by taking bloods etc.
If you are worried about what effect this has had and if there is anything you should be looking out for then I suggest that you make an appointment with your GP and ask to have it all explained to you. Or ask about it next time you see your GP.
