Hi

does anyone know who i should contact about getting my home assessed and who do i contact about mobility aids?

Hi Vikki,

I think it would be social services. I work in home care and my clients seem to have an occupational therapist referral from social services.. They assess for things in the home and mobility equipment.

I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

Hi Vikki, your GP can make a referral for you to occupational therapy to come and assess your home and see what aids you might need. Occ Therapy come under the umbrella of social services and while you could make a direct referral for yourself it might carry more weight if it comes from your GP. That's how I did mine and I can't begin to tell you what a difference it has made to my life. Good Luck, Linda.

No they didn't Vikki. I think if I had needed anything very expensive, such as a wet room, then maybe they would, but that never came up. I had handrails put in the bathroom, a raised toilet seat, a trolley for getting food and other items from one room to another, a walking stick, a rollator for longer distances, special cutlery and a plate with an edge, a perching stool for preparing food, a stool for in the bathroom, a special gadget for opening jars of different sizes, another gadget for opening cans with ring pulls, a grabber for picking things up off the floor without having to bend, another gadget with a hook that helps with dressing, a gadget to help fasten buttons, a foam cushion to make my seat higher and I think I have another gadget thing but for the life of me I cannot remember.

I was very lucky because the lady that did my assessment had already seen 2 other people with fibromyalgia so she told me what I would need. Some of the things, like the special cutlery, I don't use that often, only when my hands are really bad, but others like my stools and gadgets for opening things I use constantly.

Hi, I would think your local Social Services is the place to start. If you need aids to help you mobilise then I think you probably need a referral to physio from you GP.

As the others have said, Social Services can undertake an ''Occupational Health Assessment'' of your needs and requirements and help with this sort of issue. I want to genuinely wish you all the best of luck.

My Dr referred me to occupation therapy but they said I should just contact social services direct I did & they were great. X

I spoke with my occupational health therapist . He recommended me to social care and they visited my home and gave me what I needed .if you don't attend occupational health then your GP should be able to contact the people my occupational did for me . Hope this helps and hope you get the aids you need soon ... Xx

Hi, I was in Town with my husband an a man was outside Asda and he introduced himself and he was from the local council and was my husband my carer, because I was leaning heavily on him, and he asked could we come to see us and discuss my care because he was from Care in The Community, when he came he asked about our day to day living and assessed our home, he said that he could put in raised toilet seats handrails and a bar that would help me get in and out of bed, also covert our bathroom into a wet room, stairlift, and he said that I would soon need a wheelchair so he put that to come into the same grant, he arranged for the handrail, toilet raisers and bed lever asap and a lady would come to assess for a grant for the rest of the things, we couldn't believe our luck to have so much done for us, anyway true to his word the handrail toilet raisers and bed lever came in no time and we were very pleased. The lady came and asked my husband if he had a private pension when he said yes ,he worked with The Forestry Commission for over forty years, she said that there was no point in going on then because of the pension, we thought we were having too much good luck. So if you have a private pension although you have been assessed for these things and worked all you life from 15 you will get nothing, so don't have your hopes too high, but we are very grateful for the things they did give us. The bed lever is a wonderful thing I can get myself in and out of bed safely on a good day without the help of my husband, Hope you all have the best day you can.
