Medication advice

Hi everyone

Wondered if you could all help me out with some medication advice. Being newly diagnosed, my doctor has prescribed me fluoxetine, Naproxen, Paracetamol and Codeine. I am wondering what else there is out there. I am wondering how sustainable codeine is long term and whether there are more effective options for pain relief. In a hurry as always as need toget ready for work any advice going back to basics would be greatly appreciated xx

Hi there,

most doctors are wary of letting patients take codeine for any length of time these days, which is a good thing. I am guessing that taking the codeine is for when the pain is really bad, it isn't terribly effective for fibro pain apart from as a quick relief. As for what medications there are out there, the list is almost as long as the number of people with the condition. Different medications react differently for each person and what may suit you, may well not suit me.

I am almost 2 years from diagnosis and many more than that since the fibro symptoms appeared. My medication is still being changed to get me to a level whereby I can maybe get out of the house for a few hours to meet friends without coming home on tears due to the pain. I have been medically retired from teaching and would love to feel like a contributing member of society but until my pain levels are under control, that isn't going to happen.

Most of the effective types of pain relief for fibro take a few weeks to get to an optimum level and most GP's will want to give whatever they prescribe a good chance to make a difference before they change anything. The best thing to do is keep and activity and pain journal so that you have evidence for a change in medication when you next see your GP, if you find that what you have been prescribed isn't effective. Hi yes I'm on Amitriptyline it helps with pain and sleep. x
