Medic Alert Products

I don't often ask questions, and although it's not fibro related (for which I apologise, but I trust people here :-) ). I wonder if anyone has any experience with acquiring medic alert products.

As well as fibro and various other things I have a blood clotting disorder similar in some ways to haemophilia. As I am normally within easy reach of my local haematologist it's not too much of a problem, and they are aware that they cannot give me the normal treatment as I had an anaphylactic reaction to DDAVP. I am hoping to go abroad for my first holiday in 8 years and I suddenly thought, I can get by with Italian which is good because most of my hols have been in Tuscany. This year I'm off to Kos, one of the Greek Islands and am wondering if it might be a good idea to get myself some form of medic alert just incase of any problems as I know their standard treatment would be the DDAVP.

Sorry for the waffle, but I would be very grateful if you have any knowledge about how to apply and roughly what sort of cost is involved ?

Many thanks in anticipation :-)

Hello Foggy, I would highly recommend Medic Alert products if you are going abroad. It would give you peace of mind knowing that if the worst should happens your medical details can be accessed quickly. To find out more details of cost etc Google Medic Alert Uk. You will find out what you need to know.

Best wishes.

Hi Inkspot

Thank you so much Geraldine, I will most certainly go and take a peep at Medic Alert UK.....Duhhhhh. Why didn't i think of that lalala :o

I would also like to welcome you to our forum, which I to my mind is one of the very best sites you can come to for advice and support. If you go to our mother site. fibroaction.org

you will find lots of information which might interest you and also has lists of fibro groups across the country, which might include the area you live.

A lot of us consider that laughter is a very good help with easing pain as it releases feel good endorphins. If you go over to the posts side you will see more of our fun and games and do feel to join in if you feel like it :-)

I'm sending lots positive vibes your way too :-)

Hi Foggy,

Thanks for welcoming me to the forum. Isn't it always the case, when the obvious is under our nose, we think "now why did I not think of that? At least we can blame it on Fibro Fog!

I've never really belonged to a forum before, but have visited the fibroaction web site, and found it to be excellent for good and informative information.

I do agree with you on laughter, and & I think living with Fibro, it's often the case that if you don't laugh, you would cry!

I'm not too good with technology, but I'm sure in time, I'll get the hang of things.

I hope that you're feeling a good bit better, and that your meds will get sorted out.

Thanks for the positive vibes, & I'll send some back to you.

Hi Colegg

You know what will happen don't you? As soon as you have them tattooed on your arm they will find a cure for all your illnesses? Mind you, I bet you could live with that?

Take care

Yes but a long time ago, it is a beautiful place, modern areas but still with its rustic charm and history in other parts, but as I say, it was a long time ago. I really hope that you both love it my friend.

Hi Foggy, there are lots of different types of medical ID products out there and second the google route to find the best one for you. I wear an "identify yourself" one which has a metal engraved plate on a silicon wrist strap (like the charity wrist straps) which is very comfortable & gives me peace of mind (as well as Fibro, I have a brain aneurysm & allergic to local aneasthetics).

Hi Foggy,

It is a very good thing to have! I got one for my daughter by getting the jeweler to engrave a bracelet for me. But I do feel when abroad something with appropriate color also helps so I will wear a lympodema one when I am away. Get these on site I dont suppose you get one from a site that covers your particular problems.

Good luck

Thanks gins, I rather like the idea of agft1 which the silicone band as metals can cause problems for me. I might on the VW site and see what they have on offer, tho methinks they would all say "administer DDAVP" which is the preferred treatment, the one I can't have :o

Hi, I have anaphyalaxia so got a simple silver bracelet and went to a site that did silver discs that can be engraved with the medic symbol on one side and name, dial emergency and anaphylaxia on t'other. Do a websearch on Medical Alert bracelets, there are so many available. But do get the medic symbol in a colour, it doesn't show up well silver on silver. Happy hols, Lynn x

Thank you again, and I'm pleased you like Kos, we're staying at a five star hotel in Lambi called The Diamond Deluxe, but I want to try and to find the 'bubble beach' which is a bit further down the west coast. Could I ask, are they quite English speaking friendly ? I really do hope so, Greek is a lot harder than Italian :o

I'm sorry you too have had spinal fractures, are you mobile ? I've had compression fractures of L4 & L5 and T8 which I think are nowhere near as bad as one caused by an accident such as yours.

I'm sending lots of positive healing vibes your way :-)

Oh that sounds painful!! I only fractured T4 & bruised & battered the rest of me! (Plus spina bifida in lumbosacral!)

There are a couple of thermal springs if memory serves, the one Ive been to is an awful looooong way back up! (Tip - wear sandals in the water.)

Yes, they are very english speaking generally. If you need a tour guide... lol!

Hi my friend, I'm busy looking online :-)

Not sure about the doglets yet, I'm rather worried about it for poor Poppie if I put them in kennels. Alternatively I could bribe some nice person to come and move in for a week so the doglets are in familiar surroundings :-)

Me again... Im currently housebound after falling downstairs & fracturing my spine. Ive had to employ a dog walking service (lot harder tan it sounded!) But they are amazing with her and THEY DO HOME BOARDING ie doglet goes on holiday too but to their house instead of concrete kennels... Im sure the house kittie fluffies too (Ive 3 of those comedians).

I just Id throw in that option.xx
