Hi jar1

I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today? I cannot be truly sure but I can imagine that it means that it is 'not physically connected to your body' . This could be perceived as saying that it is all in your head, but I am only presuming and it could mean something completely different?

I have pasted a dictionary reference link to highlight the meaning:

dictionary.reference.com/br...

Take care

Ken

Hi Jar

How are you today - well I hope. I have thought a bought this phrase non- anatomical is not to do with the body, simple no I don't think so . So does it mean mental distribution . not sure I think we need a medic to explain it. Perhaps Mdaisy knows the correct answer . I will ask her.

Hello Jar1,

Please can I say that I do not believe it means 'all in your head' at all as this term is used in many medical articles speaking about different presentations of pain.

For instance it is mentioned here when talking about Complex Regional Pain Syndrome;

wheelessonline.com/ortho/re...

In this information it says  even in cases in which the CRPS is clearly a result of a peripheral nerve lesion, the trophic changes may extend beyond the nerve's anatomic distribution (sympathetically mediated pain does not follow anatomic distributions)

From my understanding it means the manifestation of the pain does not follow an anatomical pattern around the body as in it's distribution as you would see with other illnesses or injury. If you had painful knee, the anatomical distribution may follow the nerves around the knee.

So non- anatomical distribution means pain experience it not following a pattern as per the surrounding nerves and anatomy. Pain is described this way in medical terms to explain how it presents whether it is 'anatomical' in 'distribution' around the body or 'non-anatomical' in distribution.

So pain does not follow a usual anatomical distribution, does this makes sense? I hope so :)

Please note this is only my understanding, I think to be sure speaking to your GP or pain specialist would be advisable. I can understand how the stigma we experience might lead you to this conclusion but I am pretty sure this term is used in many medical circles to describe pain experience.

Best Wishes

Emma :)

This is in the article too, does this help explain at all - pain/hyperalgesia not limited to single nerve distribution

Pain is distributed further than the usual anatomical pattern, therefore pain is non anatomical in distribution.

It's hard to explain, trying to think how best to with an example, maybe a circuit....

Anatomical Distribution = Electricity (pain) goes round the one part of the circuit (body) as you'd expect it's distribution too.

Non Anatomical Distribution = Electricity (pain) does not limit to this one part of a circuit (body) as the distribution goes further not as you'd expect.

Hope this helps

Emma :)
