Losing weight

Has anyone got any tips on losing weight without the exercise option. My plan for world domination this year has just come unstuck because my underwear that I haven't bothered wearing for ages no longer fits me and absolutely no way could I go out without it.

Hi,

I am trying to cut out unnecessary sugar from my diet. It lurks everywhere, even in the peanut butter! :-(

Thanks Jilly.

Take care flower. Don't substitute aspartame. It's too evil even for me. It does weird things and I'm sure it fired my IBS which I had long before fibro. Honey on cereal, you can use teaspoons instead of dessert spoons. Not sure how that works but it does. I use milk substitutes where possible - like Alpro. Yeah. Hidden sugars. All part of my plot for world domination. More fresh foods. Biscuits, pies pastries and cakes must go, so you'll never see Ken for tea again. The OCCASSIONAL treat as long as it is occasional, not once a day! They say bananas are high in sugar, trouble is they're high in vitamins and trace elements, so limit intake. Whole fruit is better than fruit juice.

Is there a reason you're targeting sugar alone? I'm type 2 diabetes and it's under control with a combination of diet and tablets. Still struggling with the weight though :(

Gentle hugs

jillylin profile image
jillylin in reply to fenbadger

Yes, that aspartame is dreadful. I still have my anorexic mindset but want to just eat more natural food, not with all the added sugar and additives.

Me too jilly, our anorexic mindsets still control a lot of what we can cope with :-)

Going back many many moons ago when I had no need to diet a friend of mine and then several more tried eating a small, and I do mean tiny piece of protein every 15 mins throughout the day. The theory was that it kept the metabolism working almost non stop. It definitely worked for them along with green veg and salad instead of carbs for main meals

It's always there, isn't it :-(

Hi i stopped eating potatoe, pastry and biscuits. I now eat loads of cabage and all other greens and loads of beetroot and carrots. Only have white meats like chicken and fish and drink cold water with every meal.I hope this helps you . Oh and lots of fruit and fruit juice too. I started loosing a few pound a week. And i can not walk far with my fibro and arthritis. Good luck x

in reply to michabc

Pastry went ages ago which is probably the one thing I miss most. Live in Cornwall and some excellent pasties here :( Have recently gone back to eating potatoes because they are easy to microwave whereas rice and pasta is not. I do eat quite a few biscuits though which is also a new addition to my diet. I think my brain must have turned a full 180 degrees now

michabc profile image
michabc in reply to

I still miss pastry sometimes but it must be harder for you in Cornwall :-( . I buy pasta twists pouches for the microwave (2 min ping!) i throw tuna and pickled beetroot and grated carrot into a bowl and add the pasta pouch once its been nuked and a touch of light mayo its yummy. I see a nurse every 2 weeks to get weighed so i have to behave myself :-\ otherwise i would be in her bad books. I wish you the best of luck i know just how hard it is.x

in reply to michabc

ahaaa I do the same to the jacket potato, didn't know they made pasta pouches. Thanks michabc. My problem ( well one of the 3,400,000,+) is that I love cooking but simply can't do what I used to. I made a kilo of bread dough yesterday for pizza bases, rolls and 1 small loaf. Was too tired by the time it had proved, so I now have the biggest loaf I have ever seen. If I hollowed it out I could sail across the channel in it :)

michabc profile image
michabc in reply to

Wow! I love home made bread, only allowed wholmeal (nurse Ratchet) chicken stew would be nice with your bread. not many people realise what we all go through appart from on here. This is a lifeline to me. I hope you feel as supportedhere as i do. Take care x

in reply to michabc

granary bread for me for a few years now, the white is a luxury for my son. On the plus side, I can happily eat granary without butter

in reply to

HI there have you tried using pizza base mix instead of pastry It`s a bit chewey but does work quite well We have had rhubarb pie with low fat creme fresh for tea using pizza base. At least it is a pie of sorts hugs sue

in reply to

On my to do list Sue. Treated myself to a kenwood mixer for Christmas and am dying to try calzone. Just a folded over pizza really like you suggest but I run out of energy even with the mixer. Also got a pasta maker from my son BUT too heavy for me to lift haha

I love my bread maker, but only ever use it as a bread mixer. :)

For a bit of fun look at fenbadger's posts for today, there's only two among all the responses. :P

Hi whoamlow

I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today? I was wondering if you meant full-blown diet? Or just cutting things out? It may be a good idea to ask your GP if they would refer you to a dietician? I had a friend who did this and they merely amended their diet and lost weight. Mind you, they only ate junk food most of the time!

The transformation was incredible, she swapped her burgers and chips for salad and and fish and the pounds fell off her. So, it may be worth asking?

If you ever want advice on world domination, then fenbadger is the guy to ask. He has all these plans for taking over the world!

Just google "the spoon theory " I find it just confuses things. or maybe it`s the way I explain it. I usually just say flai battery faulty charger. No. I think that's fine. I used to say it's like a car without a fuel gauge. You don't know when you will break down. You just know you will. So you drive carefully to conserve the resource until you can refuel. I think that's very similar to the battery.

fenbadger profile image
fenbadger in reply to

ah your secret revealed. Now to sell the plan on Fibro bay :P :P

in reply to fenbadger

But I lied. It was 3 !

fenbadger profile image
fenbadger

I haven't trotted this one out for ages.

A balanced healthy diet and most of us really know what it means.

Try recipes that use less meat but you can fool yourself there's still plenty. I do a few stews and casseroles with minced product bulked out with lentils and pot barley That's the unpolished version of pearl barley available from a certain health food chain. Reprogram the scales. Move eating towards morning. What you eat late at night doesn't get burned off the same way. That doesn't mean stop but if you can have a bigger lunch and a lighter earlier supper/dinner. Hope that gives you a bit of a framework.

in reply to fenbadger

Lentils I am a huge fan of. I do however eat meat on a daily basis. Why should I cut down on it please ?

Fibrofoggiest profile image
Fibrofoggiest in reply to

I think protein can boost your metabolism, you can get that both from the lentils and the meat, everything in moderation though is good. I think all of the extreme diets are very bad for you, Atkins sent a lot of people ketotic, which isn't good, you don't need to cut down on meat, especially if it lean and free of fat and grill or bake on a trivet so that the natural fats from the meat drain away.

Hope this helps a bit :-)

Foggy x

fenbadger profile image
fenbadger

In a word fat and cholesterol. Ok 3 words. Swap some over, lentils also have fibre so help "movements" and get rid of cholesterol. I don't actually know if you're worried about that - or need to be.

I soak lentils for a bit then throw away the water. It takes away some of the gassiness.

I'm serious about the meal timing too. But it won't work on its own. I'm intrigued by the virtual gastric band. I'm terrified of the idea of a real one, though TBH I'm nowhere near qualifying for one.

I have red meat 3 times a week and don't really miss it. I haven't gone fully veg as I'm still unconvinced of the benefit though it is true 90% of the population don't eat meat because they can't afford it. That's a moral debate for another forum.

Hope that helps. Gentle hugs :)

in reply to fenbadger

I use lentils to thicken and add flavour to sauces. lentil curry is wonderful but of course I por it over the meat. never thought about cholesterol and fat I am well aware of but I cook it out rather than in if that makes sense ?

fenbadger profile image
fenbadger in reply to

Up to a point yes. You can skim off and discard the fat that rises. Still think it's better to cut down.

in reply to fenbadger

I don't cook with fat unless its chips. I use lean steak mince for chilli, bolognese etc and fry the onions with the meat so I dont have to add and don't have to skim either

fenbadger profile image
fenbadger in reply to

Good thinking. I ended up just not liking chips much and rarely have them. That and a full English which I used to adore. :( (I think)

That doesn't sound very positive does it ? I think we should all go on holiday for the summer and eat salad and swim. Where do you fancy ?

I do the five two diet I usually do it so I can eat a bit more without putting on weight. You can lose weight also on two days a week have only 500 calories the rest of the week you can eat what you like. The days must be apart for instance Monday and Thursday. Put the five two diet into a search engine then you will find out all you need to know.

Thanks mollieo I have seen that and thought I wouldn't be able to stick with it.I have days when I am aware how eating well is beneficial and others when I think "to hell with it" I'm ill make the most of it ! I am going to take the time to write myself a structured diet sheet, plan meals and buy accordingly. I am planning to start in April because my fridge and freezers are packed at the moment and I need to empty them or I will fail. Also fresh produce is becoming more available by then. have a good day xx

Oh whoamInow!! I'm in much the same position as you. I have T2 diabetes so I do have to watch what I eat. Because of other medical probs I can't exercise either.

I try to keep to a low carb diet - no starchy foods like bread, rice, pasta, and potatoes. I eat no more than 2 pieces of fruit a day, lots of protein and veg though!

I never drink fruit juices as they're really high in sugar. BUT, I bought some Trop 50 the other day - pomegranate and blueberry, and topped it with sparkling water. It didn't raise my blood sugar levels at all!

Also a lot of people here don't have aspartame in their diets. For myself, I've never had a problem with it. I have gone on to use Splenda though, and use it a lot in cooking.

I hope you find something that agrees with you and helps you.....it's a never ending battle to lose weight....and keep it off!!

Hi Sue. Got to be honest I haven't really put any effort into a structured diet before except I did for both my sons. They are both chefs and no weight problems but lived on take aways. I changed them and made whatever they wanted from scratch because that way I knew what was going into it. Even donner kebab meat cooked in a slow cooker. That was my last project and for well over a year now has worked. Now its me time. I never had it before. Could have done but it never occurred to me. The sparkling water with fruit juice or squash is my favorite evening tipple too. Strictly tea by day though, I'm a northerner :)

Hi

I have tried several different diets - to no avail. You may like to try WeightWatchers - I've lost 21lb in 7 weeks and not really sacrificed much to do it. The only exercise i do is Aqua aerobics (as it really doesnt hurt as much in the water as it would on land!). Struggling to bend myself into my swimsuit is actually harder and far more painful than the class itself! If you struggle with diet (and to be honest who doesnt) and arent able to exercise - a low carb diet may be an idea. i tried all the recommended "Fibro diets" which really didnt work for me. You can do WW online - it works for me. I wish you all the best on your diet quest. Fibrofoggy14.xx

I am thinking along the same lines about a low carb diet myself. I have added bad foods only recently because they are simple to pick up and eat, no prep, biscuits, pasties, pizzas, and that type of thing. If I put a stop on that now before they become too much of a habit I think I would find it quite easy. I lack routine and I really need to make one as far as possible. Would love to do aqua aerobics but on the 2 occasions I got there, too exhausted to undress :( No excuses for me, I love fresh fruit and veg. Congrats on your weight loss, that's quite amazing considering you are limited to exercise. Hats off to you and keep me focused please with that when I am tempted to give in :)

Maybe the best thing to do to stay on track is to plan your meals for the week, that way you know what your having (can change it round if you change your mind) but stick to your weekly menu - saves time, money, effort etc. I find that easier as i hate spending loads of time in the kitchen (as to be honest im shattered enough as it is, i find it difficult to lift saucepans etc so stick to prepacked and prewashed/ready bagged and sort dinner out in the morning when deciding on breakfast) - a little planning and prep will help you with weight loss and tiredness. Really, the recommended healthy weight loss (to keep it off) is 1/2 lb to 2lb per week. if you weigh yourself at the beginning of each week and stick to your menu you will see a difference. Keep in touch i will help you as i know its really difficult - I do have days when i get to the pool which has been an effort in itself but I am determine to not let this awful condition beat me - i'm 50 this month and have too much life to live - I didnt ask for it therefore its not staying!!!! All the best and please stay in touch. A very determined (today anyway) Fibrofoggy14.xx

I have booked a week away at the end of this month to concentrate un-interrupted on all my goals. Not going to set anything unrealistically because I am not prepared to fail. Hard to concentrate on myself after years of putting the family first but it must be done and taking just one week out could make all the difference. Of course I have booked entirely the wrong week, my birthday and Mothers Day both fall in it :( Your support means more to me than you would ever think xx
