Tinnitus awareness week

I know there are others here who suffer like myself with tinnitus to some degree or another, so I thought I would let you know that this week is tinnitus awareness week. Let people know that you have this problem, don't suffer in silence ( if only !! ) and speak with your doctor about it too. There are things out there that can help, mine tends to come and go, its more prevalent when I'm stressed, I long for the times when the ringing decreases

Does anybody have any clear idea of what caused their tinnitus, and when it started?

I know they say it can build gradually and go unnoticed at the start, but I remember exactly when I first experienced it. Was just wondering if anyone else can remember the beginnings of their tinnitus experiences?

Hi ukwahine I think I've probably had it on and off for many years but early last year I was having a really unpleasant flare and the tinnitus really became almost more than I could bear. Since then it has come and gone, some of the time better than others. I started another flare last week and bang its back nearly as bad as it was this time last year.

Do you find that it is always the same noise or pitch? Mine tends to alter which I find quite disconcerting .

Mine isn't "on" all the time, it comes and goes too. It always starts off super high pitched and really painfully loud, so that I can't hear any other noise - it overpowers like a loud microphone feedback type noise. Then gradually - and this can be either seconds or minutes - it quietens and the pitch lowers to make it less painful. Some days I get it loads, some days not at all. I haven't worked out what triggers it, and I've lived with it for over 20 years now.

I can remember quite clearly (for a change) that my tinnitus began with my very first dose of chemotherapy in 2008 and I just assumed it was one of the side effects which would ease off. I was so wrong! It has never really gone away but the volume seems to increase significantly if I am stressed or unwell with a viral infection or a cold.

Hi Foggy, yes I certainly need to see my GP about mine, it seems to be getting worse. It's a dreadful condition. You can't shut it off.

Yup Tannels , I so wish there was a switch on my head that I could just turn it off with. !! So frustrating !

I couldn't agree with you all more, it drive you nuts doesn't it unless I'm talking that's all I can hear, mine was caused my an ear operation, the ENT dept at the Hosp gave me what they call a pacifier,, it looks like a radio only you put something like a SIM card in it and it pays all the nature sounds, I have to play it at night to try break the noise down the tinnitus is causing, I'm also deaf in that ear (right one ) it feels like your head is going to explode its sooo loud, ....sending you al gnt hug and handful of sunshine....Dee xx

I have it constant in my left ear and intermittent in my right and couldn't agree more thanks for letting us know Wish I'd known yesterday when I went to see my doc

Mine gets worse during times of stress and illness when it becomes screachy like a modem noise in the 1980's if you can remember they sounded like Can barely hear anything then

Hi, I have had tinnitus in my left ear for almost 20 years, it is always there a constant humming buzzing noise which seems worse at night and it often gets so loud that it feels like its vibrating in my head. Mine seemed to have started after a bad bout of flu. Its awful only wish there was something we could do to stop it. Best wishes to everyone kazzy.

I completely understand you kazzy, I'm sorry you have been tormented by it for so long and constantly. Is there anything like a background noise that eases it at all? I have a friend who has to have a fan going in her bedroom so that she is able to get to sleep

Mine comes and grows with intensity. At the moment it is whooshing in my left ear. Usually it just dissapears but it has its moments when it crescendos . Most annoying.xgins

I always knew there is something odd about me.Even though I have it in both ears worse in the left. I can just ignore it in fact unless we are talking about it or it changes tone i dont even notice it, I can remember when I first noticed it I was walking home when I realised that I kept rubbing my right ear. That was when I first heard the humming as it was then, as soon as i heard it I can remember thinking that it was tinnitus. no cure learn to live with it.By the time I got home I had forgotten it.What does irritate me is not the noise from the tinnitus but in not being able to hear.
