Hi there, my gp said that he didn't like amitriptyline, that it was old fashioned & that there better pain meds to try, as well as better anti depressants. He switched me to Lustral & is going to be increasing my pregabalin as I tried gabapentin & had some really serious side effects - like suicidal thoughts serious - so now I'm trying to quit Tramadol 'cos of it's side effects - oral & visual hallucinations, really bad dreams, to name just a few - gp said to just stop it! Tried taking just 1 four times a day instead of the 2. Had very bad night of side effects on Saturday night - in the end I got up & took 2 Tramadol to ease the side effects. Am now on 2 three times a day only, & will decrease it by one more tablet a week, seeing how I feel. I've got to see the gp in two weeks to discuss how I'm getting on..........

Hi Julie63

I sincerely hope that you can get your medications sorted to a level of what is effective and the specific type of medication that you want to take. I personally have 50mg of Nortryptaline and is does have some positive effects for me.

Good luck and wishing you all the best

Hi Ruby, I, like many others on here, take both. Gabapentin can sometimes take a few days for the effects to be felt fully, but they do alleviate my pain considerably. I also take amitriptyline at night to help me sleep through the pain. Hth

Hi Lruk I was on pregabalin and amitriptyline, and then was taken off pregabalin due to some bad side effects. Doctor was going to put me on gabapentin and then the computer flashed a warning telling him that there are serious issues with taking gabapentin with amitriptyline!! So he said I couldn't be put on gabapentin. Gave me naproxen instead to take in addition to co codamol and co dydramol for pain. Have tried tramadol but just suffered hallucinations!!

Are you ok with your combination then as I might tell him that perhaps I could try the gabapentin?

Hi Molly, I have not any bad effects from taking them together. I was initially given the amitriptyline because I wasn't getting any sleep for the pain and then, as the pain worsened, the gabapentin was added. I hope you manage to get something that works for you. Linda

Hi Linda. thanks for letting me know about the positive effects of your medication. I will mention it to my doctor when I see him next. Does the amitriptyline help with your sleep because I have terrible trouble sleeping? nicola

It certainly does, my GP prescribed just for that reason. I find it have to take several hours before I go to bed or I cannot get up in the morning. You will probably get a low dose to start with but it can be increased by your GP if you find it isn't helping. It also helps reduce the pain.

Hi Ruby, I take Gabapentin and so does my daughter and it does really help. I do still get pain as nothing removes that completely unfortunately but I know without our Gabapentin the pain would be much worse! It can increase appetite a little which is why some gain weight on it but you need to try and control that by eating healthy snacks not that I always manage that! Take care

I find the gabapentin has helped with pain levels, but still feel very tired taking it.

Hi I found gabapentin worked quite well, but had to regularly increase the dose to keep it working. Once I got to max dose, I started getting side effects & had to come off them completely. I now take a low dose 100mg on an as needed basis (on really painful days or if I have a busy day) & take up to 3 spread out over the day. This works for me. Hope they work for you xxx

Hi, I am taking 400mg tab 4 times daily, and yes it does mostly take the edge off the pain, but does make you tired,

I also take amatripaline at night as I don't sleep well,a contradiction in terms I know but that's the fun of fibromyalgia combined with lupus, raynards, urticaria, and depression,,,,,, who says we don't know how to have a laugh?? X

Hi Ruby67, I am taking Gabapentin now 900mg 3xday and I find it does help my pain although it doesn't remove it completely but nobody I know with Fibro can get completely out of pain. Also my other conditions don't help. I used to be on amitriptyline and definitely find Gabapentin better. Best wishes
