Does anyone suffering from Fibromyalgia also have sibling(s), parent(s) or children with it?

the reason I ask is that my mum has begun to exhibit symptoms not unlike my own. i am wondering if its possible that its genetic. I should add both my mother and I have also both suffered from depression since our mid teens.

Morning fanakerpan, lol it's years since I heard that phrase, nice one, .....as a matter of fact I think my daughter has fibro she ha soo many symptoms but she is in denial she won't admit it or go to the docs.reason being I think is because I've had it since 11yrs old along with spondylosis and am now 72 and she has seen me suffer soooo much, and I have a stronger pain threshold than her,and she is frightened ...and I have a very strong feeling my nan had it, she died when my mother was morn, but was in a wheelchair, and in those days fibro wasn't recognised was it, relatives say she had muscular rheumatism and what they termed then as dropsy, I think nw a days it may be lymphodema,... But truly believe iris inherited gentle huge to you and your mum tae care .....Dee xx

hi Dee. My mum is refusing to see anybody she says she doesn't want to be labelled as people treat you differently. I can totally understand this but I am concerned because she still has 11 years before she can even consider retiring. Nat.xxx

My mom was told she had ME years ago . Sadly she passed away from cancer 5 years ago but her health was up & down for years before she became ill with that . I realy think Fibro is what she realy has & all the pills & possions she took to controle her pain coursed the kidney cancer .

She suffers with dispersion from when i was very young on & of , i do think the to thing are linked

I remember her saying to me your body knows when its had enuf w and tear it just gives up on you so be kind to it or it won't last .

I think she was every right .

I think my daughter is showing signed of fibro now & it scares me i wouldn't wish this on any one . Take care Kuga x

Hi,

both my sister and I have it although we only share some of the same symptoms. My GP says it can often seem to run in families.

My mum thinks she might have it - she's been diagnosed with arthritis & has had a hip replacement & is in a lot of pain, with the other hip, & all over her body. She's also had gout & has ibs. I think my daughter might be in trouble of getting it when she's older - we went to the doctors as she felt really run down, thought she was anaemic, but the bloods came back that she was vitamin d deficient, so now she takes vitamin tablets & eats more eggs & fish. She's also got hyper-mobility of her joints - she was advised by the doctor to not do such high kicks when she did karate - it was causing her hip joint to stretch & was causing her pain. She's being very health conscious as she doesn't want to end up like me. I agree it runs in families - must be something in our genes!

My mum has ME and has had two different strains. Started when I was 14 and I'm now 39. I was told I have it this year but still going through all the motions before it is finally diagnosed by the rheumy. *sigh* My mum was 38 when she first went down ill with it.

My daughter doesn't have the strongest constitution either. If anything I was the strong one! Not bloody anymore damnit.

So yes, genetic certainly.

Thank you all for your replies. I think my mum does have Fibro or possibly ME but until she decides to get help i.e she sees a rheumatologist and gets a diagnosis, there isn't much I can do to help her. So far she is managing to cope although she has recently been signed off work for 2 weeks with 'extreme fatigue'. She knows the symptoms but has never seen what I go through day in day out as she and my dad divorced when i was 19, I chose to stay with my dad. I am one of the few people she has told, my 2 younger brothers who live with her don't know. I doubt they would recognise the symptoms ( as I did) because they have never seen what I am like as they live with my mum. I just worry that the day will come when she does need help and it will be more difficult because she has chosen to ignore it. It took me 5 years of numerous appointments and 5 different gp's to get a diagnoses and get the help I needed. The idea of her going through that stress, of not being believed, of being poked and prodded of being told you're overreacting, that the pain is all in your head, it really upsets me. I have tried to talk to her about it but she is not interested so all I can do is respect her wishes and be there if she ever needs me. Not easy though lol
