I have throughout most of my adult life been an insomniac and I cannot truthfully say that Fibro has affected my sleep pattern to any noticeable degree. I think it may be a little worse or it could be that as I have got older I notice it a little more? The only tangible aspect of my sleep pattern nowadays is that I never feel refreshed when I wake up.

All my hopes and dreams for everyone

I usually end up asleep on my sofa after waiting for the next time I can take my meds. I fall asleep from exhaustion rather than natural sleep. I'm awake now and it's 04.37hrs.

I find that when I don't take my herbal sleeping tablets, I don't have a restful night. However, when I do take them, my sleep is restful and I wake up feeling refreshed. I must emphasise that the tablets are herbal and therefore have no side effects.

More times than not I used to sleep on the sofa but even if it was an hour I would wake up with terrible pain so I found that if I fail asleep while sitting upright on a chair just noding off even for 5-10 mins at a time I would feel a lot better and in less pain. Weird or what?

annacruachan profile image

I can't sleep without Zopiclone. It gives me 4 - 6 hours and I wake up feeling alive if not without pain. When I can't get off to sleep I sit in my armchair and usually go off easily. Like you Helloyou I find it much more comfortable even than bed and feel good mentally when I wake. Breathing is less restricted and I seem able to get into a position where most bits don't hurt.

I have broken sleep. I wake up with pains and aches, restless legs. I am very irritable with everyone as I am in pain 90% of my day. I have to push myself to get through the day. I lack a sense of humour. Everything is such an effort. I don't really socialise with people if I cant get out of it I do. I cant concentrate anymore. I feel I have aged dreadfully. I am 46-47 in January and I look so much older and haggard for my years. I feel I am spent. 😒.

All of the above. My sleep is chaotic and no amount of taming works for more than a day or so especially at the moment. Pain management has a big impact on this. So winter is worse due to the impact the cold has on pain. It is a rare joy to feel any tinge of refreshment from sleep. I rarely make it beyond the first R.E.M. Cycle without waking even if it's to move for pain reduction or pee for the billion-eth time

I bought a fitbit to look at my sleep pattern and found that I'd think I'd slept 6 to 8 hours but I was so restless my fitbit would only, typically, record half the time as sleep. The nights my fitbit said I'd had 6+ hours I'd wake feeling refreshed. Fascinating but also helpful in backing me up in discussion with my GP.

I used to feel unrefreshed when waking then I had a temp GP who was from America and worked in a Fibro Clinic in the states.

She urged me to have checks for sleep apnea of which It was discovered I had mild apnea, since using the machine I sleep well most of the time and this has made a huge difference helping me to battle with all the other problems that change frequently,as the condition dictates.

I fear lots of people live with sleep apnea alongside Fibromyalgia or ME and never know?

It does pay to have these simple checks!

TheAuthor profile image

I've had many varying degrees of sleep.

1. I can't sleep

2. I sleep but wake up feeling like I haven't.

3. I sleep for hours and hours - 8-10 hours.

4. When I wake up feeling like I've been hit by a bus.

Currently at no.3

Also a very light sleeper and every time I wake, need to get up for the toilet. I find using ear plugs helps me get a better sleep and would recommend them, particularly if you are struggling to get to sleep. Also in pain when sleeping in certain positions and this is often why I need to get up.

I get the same.... I am physically and mentally exhausted most days, I love my bed and sleeping but fear the waking up part as like you said feels like being hit by a bus EVERY MORNING! 😫 it normally takes me 1-2hrs to get to sleep and I tend to wake up around 4-4:30am most mornings...and of course in pain. Then on and off in sleep as my body clock knows I have to feed my cat at 7am and get up for work. Sometimes the cat will get fed later as I am in so much pain I don't wanna move and I'm exhausted but at same time laying there makes it worse. Argh! I'm generally a light sleeper as always on alert I think lucky if I sleep right through....but even then don't feel refreshed.

Hi

It has affected my sleep I either can't get off or wake up an hour after then lay awake, some times its the pain or restless legs keeping me awake, or my brain is going ten to the dozen and won't shut down, I don't get up as I think at least my body is resting. I have heard that the less sleep you have the more pain you get so if only they could give us something to sleep we would all feel so much better.

Even though I can sleep 4 to 6 hours it is broken sleep . I will move in my sleep which then causes pain so wakes me up or my body involuntary jerks which wakes me or I can't get my breathe and start coughing . I can usually go back to sleep after a short time and 5 night's out of 7 often sees me on the sofa . sometimes getting up to take pain relief makes me feel wide awake until the meds kick in again . At the moment I seem to be fibro free. It used to keep me up at night, tossing and turning. But I increased my thyroid NDT by .5 grain, went for a walk in the evening, I take magnesium malate throughout the day and one as I go to bed along with a potassium, valerian and I think 3mg or 3mcg of melatonin, and a small piece of cheese and maybe a banana in the evening. I must say that my fibro disappeared, I now sleep like a log, I use a hot water bottle on my feet which stays warm all night and stops my cold feet and cramps. I do though wake up and want to stay in bed, maybe due to the cold outside and not needing to get up. I don't feel refreshed until an hour after rising and I am very stiff. I have been sleeping well on this regimen for several weeks. My palpitations have nearly completely gone, just the odd one during the day. If I do have to pay the bathroom a visit I go straight back to sleep. Its so great to be pain free at last. I care for my Mum with dementia during the day so I don't get a lot of exercise and have a lot of stress but I still sleep.

Hi

Since I was about 12 yrs old I took my self to bed at 9pm and I would spring up at 6:30 -7am. A real morning person.when I was 18 I went at 10 pm that's been my pattern for 20yrs unless I'm ill then I can sleep all day and night.

the last 10yrs my sleep is not refreshing, I still want to do more in the morning but not energised enough.

If for some reason I don't get to bed before 11:30 my cycle is ruined and won't be able to sleep until 2 am. adds or Triggers a flare up of symptoms.

Take good care of yourself

Like most others, it varies from very little to completely zonked.

I do set my alarm now for10hrs sleep unless I have had several nights of little or no sleep, I find the routine wake up time helps. If I need to sleep during the day I just doze sitting on the sofa so I know I won't go into a deep sleep. I find if I lay down or go to bed I'm there for hours, if not right through the night in a sort of hazzy comatosed state and then I take days to properly get back to normal.

I have found after many years, the more I sleep the more I need to, whereas around 10 -12 hrs sleep gets me through the day, mostly.

Needless to say I only work a couple of part time days now.

If I sleep , it is 4/6 hours if I can get off , but it's rare ,and it never before 4 am, but pain stops me getting off to sleep , or lack of sleep stops me getting off to sleep , sleep medication very rarely works , slightest noise wakes me up so never really get a deep sleep ! I think I go through periods of no sleep at all ! I tend now to stay in bed till midday not sleeping but resting then I can at least function for 4 hours a day before fatigue really starts to kick in again but never fully have the energy to do anything constructive! Unless I get really bl**** minded and bite the bullet and like yesterday and cleaned my fish rank now today my legs don't work ! 😞

Whether I sleep for 4 hours or 12 hours, I never wake up feeling refreshed, and energised for the day ahead. I hope this poll is used for property research into Fibro.

I can fall asleep on a Saturday afternoon and not wake till a Tuesday evening. I wake feeling battered. Even the soulster of my feet.

That alone is destroying my life and relationships.

I suffer from anxiety which makes it difficult to sleep sometimes but I am developing a fear now because I don't know how many days I might lose if I do go to sleep.

Once asleep in can't be woken so it doesn't matter how important and appointment is if I've fallen asleep the day previous I will miss it.

Also when sleep hits me it is like a knock out blow. I know I have to find somewhere safe straight away because I'm going. I can literally feel lifes energy ebbing from my body.

I've had to leave events and get in a taxi and go straight home or a friends car to sleep if I'm to far from home

Hope all the responses received will help others

My sleeping is erratic, sometimes I can't sleep for pain, a lot of times its my legs. I canot make any sense out of why sometimes sleep evades me & then other times need to sleep longer, could be because due to aches & pains don't feel like I've been to sleep properly. Walking upstairs exhausts me, my immune system is shot, I'm permanently ill and pick up every bug going. It's not a life neither for me or my 12 yr old & I'm coming up to six yrs in Feb 17.

My sleep was very poor, I felt like I was in a shallow, half awake state all night. My doctor prescribed me Amitriptyline, and explained that sleep is the body's best healer, and I would feel better after getting proper deep sleep after a while. He was quite right. I'm by no means cured of course, but it helps me manage the symptoms of Fibro enough to function reasonably well, bad flare ups are reduced to about 4 episodes a year. I have had to learn to pace myself, and if that means stopping what I'm doing at the first signs of stiffness/pain, or having an afternoon rest or an early night, then I've found I can get by. I do often wake at about 2am to go to the loo, but can usually go back to sleep afterwards, then OK until about 5.30 am. Any sleep after that is of the "shallow" variety.

I consider myself lucky that taking Amitriptyline has helped my sleep pattern considerably. I now sleep between 6-8 hours a night but I struggle to get up in the morning. I never feel refreshed but better it's than before medication. When I couldn't sleep for more than 2-3 hours.

I had years of no sleep until i collapsed due to exhaustion. I had restless leg syndrome 24hrs a day, i couldnt even sit down to eat a meal.

Since taking ropierole and Amtriptlline things are a lot better. Unfortunately i now have acid reflux. So i could either be awake all night with restless legs though not often now or i could spend the night coughing up flem from the acid that gets breathed in.

Some times i just cant nod off and just lie there with my thoughts racing. at the moment the only thing that will wake me up is needing a wee. If i didnt have to go im sure id sleep all day aswell.

It doesnt matter how long or short a sleep i get i am still ready to go back to bed before i have finished my first cup of tea.

I rarely get to sleep before 4 am. I have tried all the tricks, warm milky drink, reading, trying to tense my muscles then relax them, medication, having a busy day, anything and everything. If by chance I manage to have more than six hours I try to replicate what I had done that day but it never works. Sometimes I feel I am nodding off so put down the book, take off my glasses, snuggle down, light off, BOOOM! Wide awake. I don't know why.

Some mornings I am so stiff it takes a while to get out of bed, but funnily enough it is after those nights of good sleep. I guess if I am tossing and turning my joints and muscles don't have time to "set" Totally bizarre.

Pain, restless legs, needing the loo, brain not switching off. A combination or all of these symptoms. Every now and again approx once a month I will sleep 10 hours plus finding it hard to get out of bed at all the following day.

I'm lucky if I have 2 hours sleep at night, but I need to be up for 6.45am for girls going to school make there packed lunches jump back into bed and could sleep almost 6hours straight, hear nothing then when I do get up I feel I could go straight back to bed, but if I do, I can't sleep, head bursting in so much pain, I just about had enough. My oh doesn't understand he says I have turned day into night, I'm constantly exhausted, it's getting so boring moaning, I just wish other people ( like g.p etc could understand) x

Meant to say sleeping medication is zopiclone 7.5mg, amatripline 20mg, diazepam 5mg if needed and mirtrazapine 45mg enough to knock out an elephant and still can't sleep, but can sleep 6 hours in morning with morning meds x

I never have a good nights sleep as always wake up every 2 - 4 hours ,never get up feeling refreshed for long have episodes of overwhelming tiredness , weakness aches and pains.

Most days I wake up but am not well rested. I love the days I feel I've slept enough and feel refreshed. They are very special and happen once or twice a week. I also love when I wake and know God is present. His presence makes it okay that I'm not refreshed. I'm at peace with my lack of sleep because his presence brings peacefulness. It's truly an awesome experience and I treasure it every time.

I've had Fibro since 2009, since then I haven't had one good night's sleep. I don't even have a good chunk of sleep. I cat nap, toss and turn trying to get comfortable which is impossible with RLS that drives me to tears when it's really bad in the small hours. I sit up for a drink of water or to suck a TicTac mint as I feel nauseous, then it's the umpteenth trip to the bathroom! I must stagger miles wandering around at night! Then i go downstairs where the dogs look at me as though I'm bonkers which is how I feel half the time with this new version of my life. I feel stifled anger at what I've become - I was always happy, often called the life and soul, good for a laugh. Also very social, very fit and active, never tiring. My late hubby called me a cyclone, then Fibro hit me! My cyclone days are long gone. I feel exhausted, lazy, idle, antisocial as I only want to be at home where I feel safe. I don't mix well any more, I blag it when I have to be with people and I'm too tired to care most of the time. I miss me! Now I'm a new widow in my early 50s, I can't work sadly doing the job I loved, my days are always the same from one month to the next. No sleep, no energy, my get up and go has left the building. I don't look ahead as I don't see anything but I'm not depressed and I just accept this is it how for me now. I feel guilty as though I'm wasting this precious gift of life, I'm always determined that one day a miracle might happen and my quality of life will return. Miracles can happen sometimes and perhaps even some restorative sleep! How amazing would that be! :)

I take dosiepin before bed. It is an early tricyclic, similar to amytrip. I have taken it for many years and usually sleep well. When I'm in a flare my sleep is lighter, but still adequate. This medication has been a godsend, and allowed me to work while suffering from CFS

Firstly, I'm not certain that my sleep issues are specifically related to fibromyalgia, as my main condition is ME and I have always had sleep issues with that. I have also this year had a diagnosis of restless leg syndrome and functional neurological disorder, and all these conditions affect sleep so it's difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of issues.

However, I have ticked 'I never feel refreshed' and 'some days I can't get out of bed' as they have been issues for a long time.

With regard to the length of time I sleep, I haven't ticked any box as my sleep pattern is all over the shop. I can get just a few hours sleep or over 12. It can be one solid sleep or broken into several short bursts. It can start early in the evening or gone two in the morning. And I can wake up anytime from seven onwards to midday. Plus I keep fluctuating between it all and there is no pattern and no rhyme or reason as to which scenario is going to happen on any given day.

The only constant is never ever feeling refreshed.

I have found that if I sleep in later than 6.30am as time goes by it becomes increasingly difficult to get up and my pain levels increase. I try to get to bed no later than 10.30pm and the routine has improved my sleep pattern slightly.

Since developing Fibromyalgia I have always felt as if I'm lying on rocks, even after buying a rather expensive Tempur mattress! I also was finding increasingly difficult to turn in bed so I got a slide-sheet- what a revelation that was! I don't want to break any forum rules by mentioning the manufacturer's name but if anyone wants to know please message me 💖

I voted for never feeling refreshed. Since I stopped working over 2 years ago I have basically no demands upon me. My wife keeps everything ticking over. Most I do is get out with dog on mobility scooter. So I spent most of my days just sitting. Despite this I have no energy. Smallest activity wipes me out. I wake feeling wiped out. No respite from this.

Always woke up tired, fatigued all day. Actually never woke up. Had to be wakened! However.. Diagnosed with severe sleep apnoea.. Now use cpap machine.. Tremendous improvement. Been fatigued again recently, but have stopped all pain relief, trying to cope with nothing, other than 20 mg paroxetine. Never had a problem with my sleep pattern but now over the last few years fibro Dx about 8years ago my sleep is horrendous... I either stay awake for hours on end all through the night...then typically will sleep as soon as its the time most people are getting up!

Or do something like go out for an hour in my electric wheelchair and feel so exhausted i slept for literally 17hours woke up ate then sleep another 10 wake up refreshed NO Not at all!

The quality of my sleep is very strange its as if I'm awake but I'm actually asleep..then I mix up my dreams with why is real and what was a dream! I guess that's fatigue ?

Most nights I cannot sleep. I go to bed after taking pain killers and using ibroprophen gel which do no good at all.
