Egg Freezing - feeling upset

Having broke up from my relationship with the man that I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life, I decided to freeze my egg as I'm 39. I've always wanted children but never found the right partner. I had all my checks done and my amh was reasonably good for my age etc on Friday I went in for my egg collection. My last scan showed 12/13 large antra folicles and I guess I was expecting 10 eggs. I only got 7, if which 2 were abnormal, 1 immature so only froze 4. I was on a high dosage throught out - 450 Gonal F, certitide and 150 merinol. I feel so upset with my result. I completely changed my diet 3 months before starting the stimms, no alcohol, high protein, lots of vitamins etc and I can't figure out why I got such a bad response. I've been reading online that there is no such thing as empty folicles and this is contributed to the protocol used, was my dose too high? Did my doctor get my trigger timings wrong? Or is it me? Just feel really upset... Has anyone had a similar experience? Did it get better on a second try?

Hi and many thanks for your post.

I was hoping to reply sooner so please accept my apologies, but I've been travelling in Italy for a few weeks with poor internet connection.

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling so upset with your results.

Egg collection can be a very emotional experience, as the end result can often be very different from what you first expect to achieve.

Without supporting yourself with natural methods, there is little you can do in conventional medicine to alter these numbers. Focusing on diet, herbal medicine and lifestyle changes with the support of a practitioner, could make a difference to any future collections, should you decide to do any more.

I usually suggest that my clients consider using a sperm donor in this type of situation, so that you can also freeze some embryos, rather than just eggs.

Something that the Assisted Reproductive Community doesn't often share is that very few babies have been born so far just from frozen egg cycles.

Many babies have however been born from frozen embryo cycles and this seems to be more effective, at least to date.

Without assessing your situation in a consultation, it's hard to know what may or may not have happened with regards to treatment cycle. This is something that you should ideally discuss with the clinic in more detail and ask for guidance on.

From a natural medicine viewpoint I would suggest thinking about finding a practitioner to work with to support your health in advance of any future retrieval cycles, so that you are at your optimum to enable the best possible outcome.

There is a lot that you can do with diet, herbal medicine and lifestyle.

Hi Andrew thank you for taking the time to respond. There seems to be lots of forums/support for those going through the whole ivf cycle rather than those who are single and freezing eggs. I will certainly download your guide. During the 3 months before my egg collection I did change my lifestyle - no alcohol, no sugary treats, only 2 cups if decaff and high protein diet. I also took a number of supplements including omega 3, multi vit with folic acid, royal jelly and coq 10... Before stimms my scan showed 11 antra follicles. I have spoken to my consultant and we are going to change the protocol for the next round. Based on what I have read, it appears that this process is very much trial & error of getting the right protocol in order to get the maximum results...

Thanks for your reply.

My usual suggestion for anyone starting the assisted journey is to prepare yourself physically and emotionally in advance of the start of a collection cycle. That way you will optimise your chances of success, and hopefully have to do fewer IVF cycles.

Sadly conventional medicine doesn't often take this approach, but in the natural world we do.

My treatment programme The Baby Creating Plan, offers a 12 week Assisted Treatment Cycle Preparation Programme. In this time we work to help our clients attain the best level of health that they can, to optimise their egg quality and increase their chances of success of the upcoming cycle.

My advice to anyone on this journey is to find someone to work with that can assess your current health and journey and help you to enhance your health in advance of the treatment cycle.

Once your body is working at it's optimum level, your results will be the best that they can be.

The methods I use to achieve this on my programme are:

- herbal medicine

- diet and supplementation

- emotional wellbeing

- and at times Fertility Massage if circulation to the ovaries and uterus are a problem

Using this combined approach allows you to work on your health and get as prepared as you can physically and emotionally.

The results I've seen over the past 18 years show clearly that this makes a difference to Egg Collection and IVF results, as well as to your general health.

My guide talks more about this and there's a new version coming out in a few weeks time, so look out for that too. We'll let you know once it's ready.

Best wishes!

Andrew
