Hi,

Based on what I’ve heard from a couple of podcasts, you cannot metabolize folic acid if you have the gene and should take methylfolate instead.

hi, I have this as well and my clinic told me to take 5mg methylfolate ( active form of folic acid) daily in addition to the recommended folic acid supplements in the first three month of pregnancy. You can get these from Holland and Barrett or from Amazon. Good luck x

hello! It depends a little on what form of MTHFR and whether it’s heterozygous or homozygous (worse) as to how it can impede pregnancy. Basically though it means chance of miscarriage is a bit higher. This is due to not methylating folic acid, which in turn can increase homocysteine levels and could cause miscarriage due to blood clotting in the placenta. So you need to avoid folic acid in that form and take a good quality l-methylfolate instead- both before and during pregnancy. You may also need a blood thinner such as clexane depending on the mutation.

I have the worst MTHFR mutation and took methylfolate and clexane throughout pregnancy successfully,

Thank you, it’s heterozygous mutation. I am taking wild nutrition multivitamins which has methylfolate in it. Is I-methylfolate and methylfolate same or different?

What was the recommended dose?

So your mutation is just on one copy of the gene (hetero) and it’s the A1298C variation which is the least bad. So your result is not likely to affect you much at all luckily. So only thing worth doing is taking methyfolate but you are already doing so. But yes l-methyfolate or 6(s)- methyfolate are the most bio-available.

If it helps I have the homozygous of the C677T gene which is the worst one to have and I managed to have my baby (with help). So luckily I don’t think you need to worry about it too much xx

That’s very assuring xx

I was really worried. I feel there is one problem after another and there is no end in sight.

Thank you so much xx

Hello again, pls can you tell what was the recommended dose of folate for you? Did you have a different protocol for your successful transfer? Does this impact implantation?xx

It was different for me as I had the most extreme mutation. I think the normal recommended amount is 400iu to 1mg a day. I was on 5mg a day eventually but that is a lot and too much is not always good.

I did have a completely different protocol for my successful transfer but I also had immune things going on- so was on steroids etc too. I don’t know if it impacts implantation - there are so many variables. Xx
