Help - transfer day 1 or 2 embryos to transfer

Hi all,

we have just had the call to say we have 1 grade 5ab and 1 grade 4ab and 4 that are lesser quality and not suitable for freezing. we will be freezing the 4ab but wanted to see if anyone has had experience transferring a high quality embryo alongside one of the lesser quality ones that cant be frozen?

does this affect the chance of 5AB being successfully? My partner and i would love a twins but not at the cost of any pregnancy at all but I'm finding such conflicting advise.

Our clinic (like most) try and avoid multiple pregnancies in all cases, i am aware of the risks involved in twin pregnancies.

any advice would be very much appreciated

Hi lovely, I had the same question for my clinic and the embryologist actually made me feel a bit stupid and said "why on earth would you think that a lesser quality embryo would make a higher quality embryo not work" and I didn't really have anything to back it up with!! I also found lots of conflicting advice, but ultimately I trusted my clinic as they are the ones doing the transfer.

Have you asked their opinion? xx

They only want to do 1 embryo transfer as they have said that they avoid multiple births as the risks are high (I'm fit, healthy and 34 with no medical conditions so they are talking in general) ultimately they have said its up to us but they don't recommend it as HEFA dont recommend multiple embryo transfer

I've had several double embryo transfers and was always willing to take the risk. But it's up to you ultimately.Did they say whether they thought a lesser quality embryo would affect a higher quality one?

they haven't mentioned that but it wasn't even given as an option until i pushed and asked loads of questions, im really tempted to transfer 2 my OH has been scared by att the risks that the clinics have told us about twin birth defects

I transferred 2 - day 5BA and a day 6 4BB and had twins…I was fit and healthy healthy no underlying health conditions and i found a twin pregnancy brutal and we all nearly died (similar story for a friend of mine whose heart gave out during the c section - luckily she survived) - I know lots of people think that clinics just don’t want us to do double transfers and the risk is just a general one but it is “riskier” than a Singleton pregnancy . Also I know just as many ladies who had triplets from a double transfer as I do twins so only do a double of you are prepared for a 2 or 3 (or 4!)

This is always my fear! That I end up being made to sound silly... 🙊When I was offered a similar choice 1.5 years ago, I had this article in mind theguardian.com/science/201... . I haven't looked into the research it cites, to see how robust it really is. But I told the embryologist that that was what made me concerned about putting back 2. In the end the clinic did recommended putting two embryos back so I did (neither implanted, sadly). Ultimately I guess we have to trust the embryologists! 🤷‍♀️🙊 And lots of people on here have conceived twins from embryos of differing quality, so I'm not sure how well that Guardian piece stands the test of time 😘 xx

Hey hun, I had two embryos transfered and I am pregnant with twins. I really wasn't expecting it after all my failures but I'm loving proof that if you have 2 put in be prepared for twins. I have child already so twins wasn't on my wish list I was so convinced they both would work I never believed it would happen. Also the embryos were slow developed at 5 days there weren't even graded! Infact one wasn't a blastocyst the clinic called it a morula? My failures were all top grade embryos and I all I can think right now is if its meant to be it will at the right time. Good luck I will be following your progress! Also just a quick note my sickness has been horrendous and I'm consultant lead as im classed as high risk so be prepared its not easy xxxxx

I’m also transferring 2 on 18/10. I am absolutely sure it will work! I am convinced I am having twins. This is our 4th transfer .
