Chronic endometritis

Anyone have any experience of being diagnosed with this or treatment options?

We’ve just had our 6th failed ivf attempt after being diagnosed with chronic endometritis flagged by an endometrium assessment at the end of last year (ERA, EMMA, ALICE & NK cells test). Our doctor was confident that a course of antibiotics would clear up the infection and that we should then immediately crack on with transferring one of our pgs tested embryos - which we’ve just done but yet again it’s failed to implant. The earliest appointment we can get with our doctor to try to understand what might have happened is over 2 weeks away and just feel so in limbo about what to think.

She was so sure that this would unlock our reoccurring implantation failure and now it’s not worked I just have no idea where we go from here. If the antibiotics didn’t work to clear up the injection then what will?? I’m so worried there’s something else that our clinic are missing and I just can’t keep putting myself through this anymore - so exhausted by it all

I tested twice for endometritis and tests came back negative but because of my 3 chemicals in a row my clinic decided to "treat" me like I was positive and also in case I have hidden adenomyosis. I was also on antibiotics for 14 days Doxycycline 100mg once a day (probably you been twice a day) and I had 1 injection "decapeptyl" (similar to Lupron) that shut my hormones completely and I feel very menopausal 😣🥴🙄. That injection will stay in my body for next 3 months. My transfer is planned in next weeks and I hope this will work. I don't really have an advice for you but I thought sharing my story will help you somehow. Take care ♥️🤗

Thank you so much for you reply. I really hope all you’ve put yourself through is the key to unlocking it all and huge amounts of good luck for your transfer next week 🤞🏻 yeh I also had antibiotics before this transfer but I’m now worried that they haven’t cleared up the infection and if that’s the case what on earth do we do next. This all feels like on hurdle after another.

After 2 failed IVFs and one IVF 5 week miscarriage and one natural 7 week miscarriage I tested positive for endometritis. I am with the NHS and they are still trying to gather enough data to prove the treatment works before they can prescribe it. Rather than having the antibiotics I was in a trial where I have a 50:50 chance of having the antibiotics and having the placebo.

I also decided to take matters into my own hands and stared taking probiotics which are also suspected to help as the infection may mess with your uterine microbiome. I also took turmeric and have tried to reduce inflammatory foods and increase anti inflammatory foods in my diet. This was because the infection causes inflammation of the uterus.

I had a second biopsy as part of the clinical trial to check if the infection had gone ( I don’t know the results as it is a trial) but having the procedure is similar to having an endometrial scratch which may help with implantation.

I just found out I am pregnant again after all this so am keeping my fingers crossed this all makes a difference and our embryo properly implants this time.

It is such an exhausting process. I hope you manage to work out what’s best for you. xxx

Thank you so much for taking time to reply. I didn’t know the NHS were even looking into this so that’s great to be able to take part in research which hopefully will pave the way for this to be recognised on the NHS. Yes I also took vaginal probiotics as well but that’s interesting about turmeric/anti inflammatory foods - one to look into for sure. I was actually quite surprised our clinic didn’t recommend doing a second biopsy after i’d had my antibiotics to double check whether they had done the job, they just said yeh crack on with another transfer, but not this one hasn’t worked I can’t see how we can transfer any more of our embryos without knowing for sure.

Really hoping this has worked for you and huge congrats on your pregnancy 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Why don't any fertility clinics recheck to see if infection is gone? Mine said not to either. I got an infection from the egg retrieval procedure (freezing eggs for medical reasons) and my nyu clinic has been terrible. They haven't answered my questions have left me in the dark, prescribed me a week of antibiotics (didn't tell me for almost 2 weeks after my swab test that I had an infection probably because they didn't believe I was having abnormal discomfort)..then it was basically like "hopefully we haven't ruined your future fertility, oh well". How were you guys tested for endometritis? What is the test for that? What are your symptoms? I'm trying to figure out what's going on with me as no one will tell me anything. It's horrendous.

Oh that’s just so frustrating!! Yes I had to actually convince my clinic to retest me which they agreed to with some reluctance. It’s a test called EMMA/ALICE which involves taking a biopsy of your endometrium. It’s not a pleasant procedure but they insert a small catheter through your cervix and then scrap a bit of the womb lining off. The irony is that by just having the test it can cause infection because something is being introduced into the uterus so I was prescribe antibiotics afterwards as well.

I’m fully expecting the test to come back showing the infection is still there and will be beyond frustrated that we basically wasted one of our embryos because it wasn’t sorted out last time around. I believe the only treatment is to keep trying antibiotics until it clears up but I have a feeling that my microbiome is just generally out of wack which means I don’t have the right balance of lactobacillus and my vaginal ph is out of wack (you can get home swab test to check the ph) meaning i’m more prone to ‘bad’ bacteria getting in there. I also have no symptoms whatsoever and have never suffered from thrush or bv but i’m still taking every over the counter solution I can find to try and get the balance back - oral probiotics, vaginal probiotic once a week plus using bv gel after my period as apparently menstruation can cause your ph to become unbalanced .

I really hope you get a resolution with your clinic and have some definitive tests done 🤞🏻🤞🏻
