When does cycle return after miscarriage and surgical management? Whats day 1 of cycle?

I was somewhere between 5 and 7 weeks when the embryo started to fail. I stopped the progesterone and Estrogen last Thursday and had surgical management on Monday (though I started bleeding on Saturday and may have passed the sac then). I’m not sure what happens now. All the pregnancy tissue is gone since Monday, just some pink spotting left. Does my body need to keep bleeding before it can start ovulation process again? I was told between 4 to 6 weeks for cycle to return but is that from the end of this bleed or the beginning of the miscarriage (unclear when that was) or from date of surgery? With any luck I can do my next DE FET just before Xmas around my 41st birthday. I know patience is a virtue, but sod it. I want baby now!

Sorry to hear you've been through this, Lillilly, look after yourself. My cycle is usually 26 days, when I had a miscarriage at 8 weeks I got my first period around 23 days after I had passed the pregnancy tissue. I'm sure everyone's different though xx

Hey thanks for the reply. I didn't receive a notification so missed everybody's responses!

Sorry about your MC :(

Hey lovely, following as I’m wondering the same. I had a d&c at end of Aug and still no period, but I did bleed for 3/4 weeks afterwards so perhaps that’s why? Xx

Oh wow, that's a really long time to bleed. I hope AF comes soon. Probably the only time we ever look forward to it!

Sorry to hear this, I hope you are doing ok as ok can be. My period came 30days after my "main bleed" sooner than I thought which I was glad about. Like you I am hoping for FET before xmas, hoping to start on my november period. Best of luck, and be kind to yourself, it's a tough time xx

Thanks lovely and so sorry for your MC too. I've started tracking my ovulation with pee sticks. It was high at the beginning of the week which I put down to the remaining pregnancy hormones. It's really low now. If I'm to have the transfer before Xmas I need to ovulate in the next few days but the sticks aren't as determined as I am! I guess it will be Jan 2021. You'd have thought I'd learnt patience after years of this. Nope.

Hi Lillilly. Day one of your cycle is the first day you start to bleed. It can take up to 3 cycles for your period to return to what is normal for you. Hope all goes well. Diane

Thanks Diane, this is helpful to know. The bleeding was brief and thankfully, painless. The D&C was straightforward and thorough I guess. Thanks again xx

Hi. So pleased that all went as it should. Don't forget to have a rest when you can. Diane

Thanks Diane. I've noticed your comments to other mothers on here who miscarried and it seems you have a list of questions for follow up. Would you mind sending those to me as well? I'm finding that unless I ask, I get thrown into a one-size fits all approach. We have one last DE Embryo left so I want to make sure I've done all I can before the transfer (yes, you're right. I should rest too). Thanks xx

Hi Lillilly. I'm sorry but I forgot to ask you to email me in confidence for the list of questions. I am here until 4.00pm today, then away until Friday 30th October. Diane

I tested to make sure hcg was negative then started opk to see when I would ovulate. I ovulated about 2/3 days after a negative PT (also 2/3 days after stopping bleeding) then I got my period 2w later. From the mva was about 30 days.

Thanks lovely, this is really helpful. I've started on the ovulation tests but haven't done a HPT yet, which the hospital said I should do on Monday. Might do one tomorrow. Hope you're feeling well xxx

I am sorry for your loss. Not sure if this advice has changed, but we used to advise that you have to wait for bleeding post management to settle, then it was advised you had at least a normal cycle before you started trying again. I wish you all the best!

Thank you, that's really kind of you xxx.

I think that's what my clinic are saying too. I'm hopefully having a follow up scan next week to make sure all is looking good and to check my uterus is still fit for another attempt. xxx

So sorry to hear you’ve been through this, I hope you’ve got lots of support and are looking after yourself. I had a MMC, discovered at 13 weeks, but baby stopped developing at 11+5. I had surgical management and bled for 2 weeks after, my next period came 40 days after the surgery. My cycle is normally 29-31 days long. Take care of yourself xx

I was reading this as I have my 12 week scan next week and was interested to see what the replies would be as this has also crossed my mind of course.

Lavender, I’m so sorry. I can’t imagine how brutal it must have been to have a loss at 11+5. Big hugs ❤️❤️

Hey Lizzy, just saw we wrote at the same time. Do you have any reason to think your pregnancy may be struggling? I guess it's important to be aware of the risks but please take care of yourself and focus on it all going perfectly. You're our torchbearer now. Take that little bean past the 12 week mark and we'll all cheer you on! xxx

Thanks Lillily, I don’t feel like anyone’s torchbearer. We found out at our 7 week viability scan with the IVF clinic that both embryos had implanted but I was going mad with anxiety & had another scan at 9+6 and found out that we lost one at the 9 week mark. Frankly, I’m terrified to go back in next week xx

Oh Lizzy, I'm so sorry. I feel like an insensitive idiot now. I can only imagine how scared you must be now. When is it next week? I am going to be thinking of you and sending you all the positive vibes. Again, I am so sorry xxx

Please don't feel bad it wasn't meant to be. This is such a cruel journey, I'm very sorry for your loss too. I keep telling myself I didn't do this journey to have "a" baby, I want a healthy happy baby that will have an amazing quality of life and that wasn't going to happen for that little one. Yes, it's nervewracking, the scan is next Wednesday 28th, just in limbo until then xx

Oh that must have been so hard. I am so so sorry for your loss. It really never crossed my mind (even though I knew it could happen) that I'd lose the baby. But I think I'm ok now. I talk about it and this forum has been great support. Reading everybody's stories helps me see that I am not alone.

Fortunately I only bled for a week after the SMM. I've started tracking my ovulation but guess the pregnancy hormones can take a while to leave xxx

So sorry that you had a miscarriage. I had the same thing last year, had to get a D&C at week 7. My period returned exactly 30 days from the procedure and cycle was back to normal after that. Take care of yourself xxx

Thanks for sharing and I'm so sorry for your loss. It's tough.

May I ask, is your cycle usually 30 days or less? I'm realising that having my next FET before Xmas is perhaps a little ambitious. Take care xxx

Lisichka profile image
Lisichka in reply to Lillilly

My cycle is normally 26 days so the one after D&C was a few days longer.

If the timing is looking a bit tight for FET, maybe just leave it for this year, enjoy Xmas, letting your body recover wouldn’t be a bad thing. Some clinics recommend 2 cycles after D&C before getting back into it. Good luck, wishing you a speedy recovery xxx

So sorry to hear about your loss. With my first miscarriage I had a period 6 weeks after my MMC. However, with my second miscarriage I started my period after 5 weeks after MMC. Wishing you all the best xx

Lillilly in reply to Sammy246

Hi Sammy, so sorry for your losses too. Thanks for the info. It seems like the first period comes a little later for most ladies but reverts to normal after that. That's really helpful to know. I think I'm going to have to manage my expectations and aim for a new year FET. Take care lovely xxx

I was told that I could expect period between 4-6 weeks after negative pregnancy test post miscarriage.

All the best for your frozen cycle. It’s always good to look forward to positive things.

Thanks Crazy Girl. Haha love the name. Yeah, I was told the same but didn't realise it was from date of negative test. Assumed it was from date of first bleeding.

All about the positivity now. Can't let those negative feelings back in. It's too dark and sad. xxx

In such crazy times, thought that name is suitable! 😄

Keep the positivity going! All the best!

Hi Lillilly sorry for your loss. I just wanted to add don't be surprised if your cycles are a bit wonky for a few months. I have had 4 x surgical management and each time I have had different - for example once I got a period 2 weeks after (from day of surgery) but another I had to wait 6 weeks (from day of surgery). I have also found my cycles have completely changed both in terms of length but also PMS etc.. so dont panic if it takes a little bit of time for things to settle into a new normal x
