Hi ladies

Has anyone continued taking progesterone suppositories past 12 weeks? If so until when and why?

I’m not with a fertility clinic at the moment but have a long history of miscarriage. My obstetrician doesn’t want me to stop progesterone until 14 weeks. He says there’s no real science behind why. He just prefers it that way. He noted during our conversation that fertility clinics only ask you to take it until 12 weeks.

Hi Corchi,

Hope you’re doing ok!

I only took mine up to 12 weeks but I did a lot of reading on it and my understanding is that the placenta takes over producing progesterone and oestrogen from week 8-10 and is fully established by week 12 which is why there isn’t any need to take it beyond that point.

Have your clinic asked you to stay on it past 12 weeks?x

Hi sweety! My doctor told me to stop all at 12 weeks but I recently had to see another doctor (I’m away from athens and in a small village) that I drove to see who is very good according to my doctor as well who said best to stay on one 200 mg utrogestan progesterone suppository every night till next scan at 20 weeks (I am now 14 going on to 15) it’s not a bother for me and I know it doesn’t harm obviously I’m just wondering!!!

Ah I see! Yeah that would confuse me as well! Have you tried contacting your original doctor for advice? If it doesn’t hurt anything to stay on a smaller dose until 20 weeks then I don’t see the harm in it xx

Haven’t asked as don’t want to undermine but I’m just taking as no harm as you say ...

Was told to drop from three pessaries to two around week ten then at week 12 to stop.

I’m actual fact I was told it would be ok to stop at 7 weeks after seeing a good viability scan. I was petrified and they said I can continue it won’t cause harm it’s just not needed - so I did continue for peace of mind. I did ask if the baby can end up being exposed to it in anyway (when placenta takes over or when things develop more) but they couldn’t answer that. They weren’t to fussed if I continued or not after 7 weeks. They didn’t put up a fight when I said I was worried. I say trust the doctor who’s for your back xx

I’m good thank you. Hit 14 weeks today. Anxiety seems to be better which is good but sciatic nerve is already feeling the pinch at night times 🙄. X

I got the bbhugme one, they sell them on John Lewis. It’s not the cheapest but the review were amazing and it literally stopped all the pain overnight! Worth every penny 🙌🏻 xx

I was told to take it for for 9 weeks by my clinic. I took it for 12 to be on the safe side. Then I asked the NHS at my 12 week scan and they flippantly said I should take it until my 16 week appointment. I took it until 14 weeks and then stopped. I just knew I didn't need it anymore. It was just a feeling I had. Tbh I dont think you need it after 12 weeks. I wouldn't take it longer than 12 weeks in the future.

I also feel I don’t need especially as bleeding has stopped completely last 3 weeks and I just had scan and all was perfect but I am a worrier by nature 😳

There's a patient I know who took it until 36 weeks of pregnancy...it was random but hospital Dr insisted to reduce miscarriage chances...maintains lining...think it's caution over any other science. Seemed pointless but there we go...no harm i guess...plus it helps to go to the loo...only bonus 🤣
