Timing of Norethisterone?

My clinic has just called and emailed me to get me to continue the Norethisterone for an additional two days until the end of Sunday. My worry is that my baseline scan is next Wednesday! I feel that this will mean I am bleeding for my baseline scan, which can't be right? I have emailed and called them back, but they are now closed, and so don't expect an answer. They have said to give them a call on Monday with any questions, but by then it will be too late!

Hi ttcemmie,

Are you on short protocol? If so, it’s normal to be bleeding at your baseline scan xxx

I'm on long, but thanks. :)

Oh sorry, not much help then! I thought they normally do baselines after you down reg?x

Mmmmm I am super confused now! I am having my baseline scan and then two days later starting Gonal-f for stimming. So I guess Norethisterone is for down reg? Not sure. My understanding was that it's just for delaying my period, but then I guess I have no down reg drugs? Hmm

Ahhh ok I see, that’s still short protocol then! I think it’s only considered long when you do a proper down reg that shuts everything off. Norethisterone is progesterone so it just holds off your period. Totally normal to have that before a short protocol cycle. I did it with my last one xx

Ohhhh thank you! Wow my clinic is absolutely useless at explaining anything at all!

Yeah it’s not their strong point 😂

It’s totally normal to be bleeding on your baseline on a short cycle though so try not to worry xx

Thank you. I'm a lot more reassured. x

That sounds about right to me. I *usually* bleed a couple of days after stopping Norethisterone and my baseline is day 2 xx

Ah okay. Thanks. I wish they'd explain this stuff! I don't think I was bleeding at my other baseline scans, and have no idea why they've randomly changed my Norethisterone schedule like two hours before I was going to take my last one! Very odd.

Oh I know, and don’t these things always happen when your clinic is closed to confirm?! Just saw your reply to Kibo about being on long. Should have mentioned mine were short, I’m not sure if that makes a difference

Yeah, I don't know if it makes a difference! I don't know why they waited until 5pm on a Friday to tell me. Ugh. Oh well.

I was bleeding for my baseline scan, they were completely unphased xx

Thanks.

That sounds like short protocol to me if you’re starting gonal f on Friday. The continuation of norethisterone will be because of clinic timing I expect. When you speak to them on Monday they might delay your scan if they need to. I didn’t bleed for a couple of days after stopping norethisterone. Hope it all goes well.

Thanks. Yeah, the Norethisterone is because of clinic timing. I had thought I was on a long protocol. Don't know why I'm on a short one! Just strange they haven't been through this with us as we've been seeing them since 2018! Anyway...

They better not be delaying my scan though! (That is one of my concerns). They've already delayed us like months, so I'm getting slightly annoyed with them. Thank you so much for your response. Helpful. x

The waiting is so frustrating! Every delay is awful. Hope it's all smooth sailing for you from here!

I was bleeding on my baseline scan too. They requested that the scan was within 5 days of my period starting. x

Hi ttcemmie,

I was on norethisterone for i think around 10 days and told the clinic i think i had a cyst on my right ovary as it hurt. They told me they would do a baseline scan then before starting (so i assume otherwise they dont do a baseline?) when i went there it was my day 3 of period and was suprise to find it wasnt an internal scan :)

So dont worry if it is internal or not. Its absolutely normal to go in day 1 to 4 of ur cycle. All the best!!!

Don't worry ttcemmie - it's normal practice I think to do baseline scan v soon after you start bleeding. They'll have set your last norethisterone pill date specifically to time your scan for day 1, 2 or 3 of your bleed. This was thr case for me on both short and long protocols. The clinic folks aren't fazed at all so don't worry. All sounds perfectly on track to me xx

Thanks! I guess I just got anxious because they changed my schedule without explaining why.
