Day 9 Scan setback

Due to risk of OHSS, I’ve been told we can proceed with egg collection on Friday but they will not do fresh embryo transfer & instead freeze them for me to come back in couple of months! Devastated. Didn’t realise this was a real risk and feel like major setback. 8 weeks seems a long time time. Has this happened anyone please? Feel so disillusioned. X

I had a scan today (after being told i would need a further day of medication) and i will be having egg collection on friday also. I have been told that i will probably have the embryos frozen for the same reason. It is hard but it is for your own safety. I already have some fluid and lots of follicles and i am so uncomfortable so cannot imagine what OHSS would feel like. Sorry you are going through this. I truly understand as i was upset when i was told. It may seem a long time but we have come this far. Sending you loads of hugs and hope friday goes well for you xxx

Hi judy, thanks your your kind words. Same back to you. I was thinking of you as I knew we started injections roughly the same time. I think it was the initial shock of it yesterday but now it has sunk in and I am trying to get some perspective. I believe everything happens for a reason so will keep the faith! Will try to enjoy these next 8 weeks as relax as much as I can. I hope you do the same. Hopefully it will go fast for us xx

Wishing you so much good luck for tomorrow hun. I have been thinking of you for the same reason!

I am all packed and ready and trying not to panic. This time tomorrow we will all be done!

Much love and hugs xxx

Hi Bing, definitely try to relax as much as possible in the next 8 weeks and build a positive mindset.

I had a fresh transfer in May 2019 after quite a difficult recovery from my egg collection and in hindsight my body was not in the best shape to receive an embryo. The transfer failed.

I then got married in July and it served as a major distraction. I went on my honeymoon, had the best time and my future frozen transfer simply became something to look forward to. I was happy and calm in the time that preceded the transfer which took place in August 2019 and it was a success. My body had rid itself of all the medication from my previous transfer and my natural cycle had resumed. I honestly believe it made all the difference. The less intervention needed the better in my view.

The delay you’re experiencing now may seem like a set back, but it may just make all the difference. If your body is under stress it is less likely to be receptive to a pregnancy.

Try to look forward to the scheduled transfer date and in the meantime try to get on with life in such a way that caters to a happy and healthy, mind body and soul.

Good luck...x

Hi Bing, I haven’t had this happen to me although after they retrieved 21 eggs on my last cycle they put me on a drug to reduce the risk of OHSS happening. I did do a fresh transfer after that one but was BFN. I had an FET a few months later after doing some tests due to repeated implantation failure and what I will say is that I felt so much better physically and was more relaxed with my FET. I know 8 weeks feels like a long time especially if you thought you’d transfer now. But in my experience the recovery time really did make a difference and in the long run 8 weeks isn’t that long. Wishing you the best for your egg collection.

Hi peony thanks for sharing your experience, that’s really reassuring to know how you felt the second time around. The nurse said that too actually, give your body a break. Just going to Take these next 8 weeks and do as much self-care as I can and gain some perspective. Wishing you all the best too xx

Hiya

I know how you feel I was told that after my egg collection and it blindsided me, I was gutted and actually wrote a post too about it. Strangely all my bloods were fine and I felt ok so they went ahead and it was a BFP, HOWEVER I got late onset OHSS and it is the worst thing that ever happened to me. I was hospitalised for over a week, couldn’t move for being sick, couldn’t eat for about 12 days and also couldn’t move for having gained 12kg of water weight basically overnight 😥 honestly if it hadn’t happened to me I wouldn’t have believed it could be so terrifying.

8 weeks seems forever when you are waiting for something that you have wanted for so long but honestly you will feel so much better going in having given your body the time to calm down. Your embryos are very precious and with waiting I’m sure they will be given the absolute best chance.

My OHSS pregnancy didn’t work out but I have since had an FET and I feel 100 times better.

Hope the time flies by, sending you all the luck for when you get your transfer ♥️ x

Aw sorry to hear what you had to endure Mrsh86. I honestly wasn’t even aware of this condition until very recent and whilst they said it could be a risk, there was little if any information. Sorry that you experienced it first hand.

I guess you just have to trust in the medical professionals that it’s for the best.

Also reassuring to note that you had a more positive experience the next time.

Really appreciate your well wishes and wishing you all the best with your journey too wherever that may be xx

It's not a setback hon. If you do end up with OHSS you'll feel really sh*tty and be glad you're not going ahead with transfer. Think of it as time to look after yourself and get back to 100% before getting your little embaby back where it belongs.

The same thing happened to me and, like you, I was really disappointed and upset but hindsight is a wonderful thing and it was definitely for the best. Hope EC goes well and there are plenty of embryos waiting for you when you've recovered and are ready to transfer. Good luck xxx

Thanks miss São Paulo, very wise words and a good way to look at it. It was just the initial shock and frustration but having read similar situations, I now believe it is for the best. Thanks for the well wishes & wishing you all the best wherever you are in your journey x

I had only mild OHSS and felt really bloated and not great for about 10 days. But it wasn't too bad. If you get it and also fall pregnant it can get really nasty.

The wait might not be as long as 8 weeks, you might be like me and have a bleed really quickly (like 5 days!!) after the egg collection. Then we just waited for my next period to start the FET medication (which is nothing like stims, it really is much easier on the body). Happily, I now have a 6-month-old, result of the first frozen transfer, so it was definitely for the best. If you've hopefully got embryos to freeze it really is the best option to let your body get over the brutal IVF process. As others have said, plan some nice things, eat and sleep well, treat yourself to some things you won't be able to do when pregnant (think positive!!) and the time will pass quickly xxx

I had late onset OHSS and was hospitalised for 4 days and it wasn’t nice at all. Ended up being hugely bloated and in pain for about 3 weeks. It’s disappointing but will be much safer for you to have it once everything’s calmed down. Best of luck for EC xxx

Aw sorry to hear that Jen, you must have suffered so bad. It helps hearing this so I can make sense of the advice I’m being given. Thanks for sharing xx

Hi hun, I almost had it after an egg retrieval of 35 eggs. I was in agony, my stomach was like 6 months pregnant (I wish!) and I couldn’t walk for three days only to get up and pee. I couldn’t sleep or move and was moments away from hyper stimulation. I was also told that a frozen embryo transfer will be done but I also think that this has also to do with that the body is just not ready after so much medication and fluid build up etc. my doctor feels frozen embryo transfer when you have a few embryos to choose from is safest. This is all for your health protection and I know it’s just more time wasted (trust me I know) but you will be a lot calmer and in better health to carry that embryo. Best wishes to you for a speedy recovery hang in there !!

Aw corgi sorry to hear you had it so bad. I feel so ignorant that I didn’t realise what an serious condition it could be.

Feeling very reassured by your doctors words too and I guess this time just wasn’t meant to be but probably for the best. Hope the 8 weeks flies by. Thanks for your well wishes and also wishing you well wherever you are at in your journey xx

Corchi profile image

Not ignorant at all. There are always so many questions we have to prove to get answers too! Isn’t it amazing how most of all doctors and specialists involved in fertility are always so vague and blunt and people of few words?!?!? It’s like pulling teeth. I truly feel this is for the best for you though in order to heal. Xx

It happened to me too, I literally sat there and cried when they told me. I was in so much pain though it was for the best to let my body settle down, ( I hated the 2 week course of blood thinner injections)

After a month I had another appointment with consultant who wanted to know how I was feeling and by this time by stomach had gone down and I was feeling back to myself, so he said we could continue the next month or wait longer and we chose to use my next cycle.

The hold ups in between treatment are the worst and the journeys are intense, as hard as it is try to relax and take some time out and spend some quality time doing fun stuff with your partner and the 8 weeks will whizz by.

Send massive hugs

X

Hi kezzy, thanks for sharing. I felt the exact same. So frustrating as feel we have come close but yet so far. So far so good In that I don’t feel any pain as such , only bit of bloating but again I just have to trust in their judgment

You’re so right about the time dragging inbetween. But plan to do lots of nice things. Maybe it has happened for a reason!

Wishing you all the best wherever you are up to xx

I totally get that you’re disappointed but the only thing I would say is that it’s definitely the safest and wisest decision if there is a risk of OHSS. I was borderline/ had mild OHSS last egg collection and it was truly awful. I had to go straight onto diff meds to manage it and it did last for a few weeks. I wasn’t actually hospitalised (although thought I might be) but I know many people are when it gets more serious so I really wouldn’t want to wish that on you!! Waiting/ set backs are really the worst during IVF and I’ve had many myself. Really feel for you but hopefully the 8 weeks will move quicker than you think. Plus you need a bit of time to recover xx

Is this a guarantee? I had high risk but I drank loads of water bad took vitamin E supplements and was able to go ahead with transfer xxx

Hi mrsH, unfortunately yes as they weren’t prepared to reconsider. That’s amazing though you managed to reverse yours so to speak. Wishing you all the best wherever you are in your journey xx
