Ivf meds causing really bad heartburn?

Hi all, I'm currently 7 weeks and over last few days I've had chronic heartburn, waking me up through the night. It must be all the meds this early, I'm on 20mg Prednisilone along with high dose Progynova and high dose Utrogestan. Anyone else had this and any tips on how to treat/manage?

First off congratulations on your pregnancy!!

Although I've never been pregnant I am a pharmacist so I have a few questions and suggestions;

Is it prednisolone tablets or pessaries or injections?

If it is tablets that could be responsible for your heartburn.

Gaviscon liquid is usually recommended in pregnancy, I know it tastes vile but it is meant to work.

Another tip is to prop yourself up at night time as gravity causes the stomach acids to go into your throat, so you could try that too.

These are just over the counter remedies, if you're concerned def speak to your doctor and get something prescribed or just for the reassurance.

Thank you 😊 yes I thought it might be Prednisilone and it's tablets. I've been really good at always taking with food and I've been on them now for a couple of months as started taking on a mock cycle before the real cycle started. It's only been in last 4 days its been really bad! I will try gaviscon thanks. Not sure if I can take liquid as it normally makes me sick 🙄 so I will try gavison tablets first. I'm guessing they are safe when pregnant?

Yes! I’m on 6mg Progynova and Utrogestan 800mg daily. The heartburn is agony. I have been on the Progynova since mid April and the Utrogestan since 1 week before fresh transfer, early May. Have had the heartburn from 4 days after starting the Utrogestan. Cycle was successful and the heartburn is now coupled with nausea and dizziness. Still can’t complain! I have found the Gaviscon in the bright pink bottle really helps at night and I get some rest with 2 spoonfuls before bed. The tablets are really sticky and stuck in my teeth so were not very effective. The liquid is gross but I can manage it if I hold my nose when swallowing so I can’t taste it 😂 Best of luck for your journey. Hope things improve.

My voice is hoarse and everything!! Hubby got me gaviscon tablets tonight but only helped for a short time 😟

I don't think I could stomach liquid. I've tried years ago and made me ill!!

I've also got nausea so it is brutal! Good luck with your journey and hopefully it settles down. 🙏 X

Sorry to hear you are going through all this. I have had mild heartburn all the way through, but nothing that the odd rennie hasn't resolved. I have seen people have to see their doctor for something stronger though - so I am sure it exists. Have a chat with your dr and hopefully it will die down a lot once you stop the tablets too xx

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Heartburn was one of my first pregnancy symptoms, I got it before morning sickness. So this may not be linked to your meds. I'm afraid to say it only got worse throughout my pregnancy. I worked up towards gaviscon! In the first trimester a few love hearts did the trick. Second was one gaviscon tablet a night. Third trimester two gaviscon tablets a night. I couldn't stand mint or aniseed while pregnant, but you can buy strawberry flavour tablets (not liquid, but still OK in pregnancy). Also agree with propping yourself up at night. I had reflux (rather than heartburn) throughout the day and night, but taking too much gaviscon or eating too many love hearts reduced their effectiveness, so I took it only to help me sleep. If it's really that bad you can get a prescription. Wishing you all the best for the rest of your pregnancy x

Thank you I'm using gaviscon tablets and they are giving some short term relief but Hubby going to buy liquid today in the hope that is more effective 😌 x

Hi, I have a pre-existing condition which causes me chronic heartburn whether pregnant or not, if gaviscon does not work, it’s perfectly safe to use nexium (not sure of the spelling) I get mine on prescription because I have to have a higher dose, so it’s called something else. But you can get that over the counter you don’t need a prescription, it’s a much lower dose than mine. I took mine all the way through my pregnancy with my little boy at a higher dose and there’s no side affects and no risk to baby. It does have a precaution on it, but I researched the ins and outs of a ducks backside with it. I wouldn’t even take paracetomol during my pregnancy because of a huge new study by the NHS that indicates there is a high percentage of boys having fertility issues if mum takes paracetomol when pregnant, it has to be regular taking, but I wouldn’t risk it, I’m podantic like that. I’m sure there is research that counter acts that now, like with every medication 😂😂 If my meds had any side affects I would have stopped them and suffered 😂😂. Works within 30mins and gives a full day of relief to others I know who take it at the lower dose. It’s also a tablet so no Yukkie taste hahaha hope this helps, but being mummsie always check with your doctor first 😀

Thanks for this I'm going to see my doctor on Monday so will ask her as think I may need something stronger. It's the fact that oesophagus just constantly feels raw even when sitting upright. I've cut out all triggers and I'm raised in bed to sleep but it's constantly there 🙄 X
