Prolactin

Hey, had to have my prolactin test done again and the results were not too great. Something about it being at 1016, so been referred to specialist so that. Just wondered if anyone else has suffered from very high levels as I am not pregnant or breastfeeding so would this have an impact on fertility? Xox

It can stop ovulation. I had problems with high prolactin which turns out was related to my Thyroid, mine was at 1311!! Have you had your TSH tested? The other thing is your prolactin rises as you sleep so if you're re-testing then dont do it as soon as you've gotten out of bed. My prolactin has been lowered since I started taking levothyroxine. My TSH wasnt ridiculously high at 4.96 but it needs to be lower for conception, around 2. Give me a shout if you've any questions. You can also look back my old posts from around a year ago.xx

Hi there

I had high prolactin levels as well and very irregular periods (at times no period for more than 6 months). The prolactin affected (blocked) my other hormones (oestrogen etc) and that is why I had no period. When I occasionally had a period I had a very short (5-7 days) Lutheal phase.

They found the reason for my high prolactin and have me a drug called cabergoline. Since then I’ve had very regular periods (28 day cycle) for 5 months. The change came immediately after I started the medication. Unfortunately we have not become pregnant in these 5 months (but I might have endometriosis, which might explain that). But at least there is finally a chance of getting pregnant now compared to the 3.5 years we tried before for when I had the very irregular periods so perhaps I shouldn’t feel too disheartened by the 5 months now (I had just put so much hope in the cabergoline as the research I did showed that many fell pregnant rather quickly after getting it).

So to answer your question. Yes, the prolactin can definitely affect your chances of getting pregnant. Hopefully that helped.

thank you for this! No I dont think 1016 is super super high so that makes me feel better. i think the doctor has referred me because I don't have irregular period (round 28-31 days) so she is unsure why it is higher than what it should be, but we shall see what the specialist of that says. Help a lot thank you :) x

Oh and to my understanding 1066 is not super high, but it is definitely elevated and can have an effect on the hormones as I wrote before.

Yes, I have elevated prolactin, I had an MRI in December last year which showed I had a 12mm adenoma on my brain. It’s quite common. I have been taking half a Cabergoline tablet for once a week since then, and at my last blood test my prolactin had fallen to 100. Prior to diagnosis my periods were regular and I was ovulating fine. I do think the medication helps with conception, although I also had fibroids and my husband has low motility and count, we are now 7 weeks pregnant via ICSI. Good luck

Yes I have a feeling that this could be the cause as by the sounds of it. OH MY GOODNESS, congrats, I have all everything crossed for you!! Doctor thinks we will have to go down the ICSI route, do you mind if i message you to ask a few questions? x

Hi

No I don’t have PCOS , I have fibroids.

I should add that my endocrinologist expects the cabergoline treatment is likely to shrink the adenoma.

Hi, yes, that has a massive impact on fertility. My levels were about that without medication, and it meant I didn't ovulate. Once my levels were in the normal range, I fell pregnant twice (about 1 year apart), but I miscarried both times. Dr. said not related to prolactin, but the literature suggests that high prolactin can impact on levels of progesterone, so I always wonder whether that was the reason. The good news is I have a little one conceived through IVF. Good luck!

Pancakexox I believe you are in good hand the specialist will help to bring it down. I suffered it with other problem multiple fibroid . My Endocrinologist was a nice doctor she did a lot of blood test and scan and X-ray, As my prolactin is elevated first 800+ and another over 1000. but my period is normal and I was ovulating according to blood test. Doctor explain to me that it is making it difficult to conceive and said that she is going to put me on cabergoline to bring it down but due to my age I may not conceive but younger ladies can conceive. She said I should take cabergoline 2 tablet two times a week , immediately my prolactin went down below normal range so her term reduced it to half tablet a week then it came back to normal range 200+. The down side for me is that my period started coming too late so she refer me to fertility specialist who find out that my left tube is block and they put me on waiting list and said that after procedure they will see is I can try or go for IVF. Believe that after you see them everything will come back normal and I believe you are in good hand.

Thank you so much for this! I am only 25 so hoping I can still conceive naturally, the main fertility issues seems to be my partner due to his diabetes not being very well controlled for years. How soon after you started taking cabergoline did you get retested? Thank you ☺️x

Hello Pancakexox, here is a place to get information and talk to people and not going to be in the dark just ask and read other people stories it helps. Yes you will conceive naturally and yes your partner will be ok if you two go back to your GP and also do research on diabetes and fertility and naturally remedies is good when you suit out that you are good to go you are young. Coming to what you ask me the doctor I am seeing and her team is a very good doctor, never look back, they send me for blood test every appointment I go, at first it was monthly to monitor the level and to adjust my medication. At first it was on tablet two times a week but when to went down lower than normal she change it to half tablet a week, to bring it up to normal range level which it's now.

Thx

Hey, I had no signs of high prolactin. Very regular periods also, however I’ve had it retested with the fertility specialist and it has give back done to normal so I personally feel it had raised because my partner had had some not so great news so I was very very stressed at the time.

Also had no signs of PCOS apart from I suffer from break outs on my chin so when I had my first appointment with the specialist she only checked my ovaries because of the spots and scars I have on my chin.

Scary to think that your body can have no signs of these things and there be that underlying problem!

Hope that helps xx
