Does anyone have any experience of subchorionic hematoma?

Hi everyone

I had some spotting from around week 6 for a week followed by a lot of bleeding and a large blood clot. I managed to get an early scan which found that baby was fine - the nurse said that she could see some blood on the scan which was not affecting the baby, and that my body might reabsorb it or that I may bleed more. Since then I’ve had some bleeding every day (so have been bleeding for 3 weeks now). Sometimes it’s very light but at other times there’s quite a lot of red blood and I also have cramps, to the extent that I thought I might have to leave work yesterday.

I saw the midwife on Thursday who advised contacting the EPU and they’ve offered me a scan tomorrow. They asked if the nurse had said what the blood might be and asked if it was a subchronioc hematoma - the nurse didn’t give me any more info about the blood so I just wondered if anyone else had had a hematoma like this and if so if their symptoms sound like mine.

Am hoping the scan tomorrow will provide some reassurance as am feeling anxious and drained from the worry. Feel scared every time I go to the loo in case there will be another big clot, or that the bleeding will get heavier 😞

If anyone has any advice I’d be grateful.

Hope everyone is doing ok x

I had this from week 6-10. I had a big bleed with cramps at 6 weeks then had a scan at 6+4 and all was well then that afternoon had another bleed. I went on to have weekly scan and the blood eventually turned to brown and wore off. It’s a worry but thankfully everything turned out fine xx

Thanks for replying 😃 Glad to hear everything turned out fine for you, keeping fingers crossed it’ll be the same for us, sonographer didn’t seem concerned at the scan on Sunday so will try to stop worrying about the ongoing bleeding now we’ve had the cause confirmed. Next scan not til mid-January now which seems a lifetime away! X

Pretty common condition which seems to resolve itself without harming the baby. Good luck with your scan .

Thanks, the sonographer diagnosed a hematoma and said they are common so feel reassured and trying to relax a bit now! X

Hello

I do . I had one up until 13 weeks . When I had a scan they told me that a lot of ladies get them but due to not having early scans they go undetected. they usually correct themselves and disappear on their own. Xx

Thanks for sharing your experience! I’m still bleeding, from the hematoma and/or progesterone pessaries, but feel reassured after all was ok with my scan! X

Yes! I bled from 8-12 weeks including 3 massive floods. Cramping too. I am now 35+1. It’s not a nice experience but try to remain positive x

Thanks for your reply! It’s been confirmed that it’s a subchronionic hematoma so am reassured and trying to just accept it’s likely I’ll bleed for a while to come yet, they think the progesterone pessaries could be contributing too! Glad to hear your pregnancy is going well - not long to wait now! X

I struggled massively with mine. I couldn’t comprehend how I could be losing so much blood over a prolonged time - at times more than a heavy period and I get very heavy periods - yet still be pregnant and baby wriggling away at each scan. A lot of the time I had bad cramping too. It was awful. The floods were particularly scary, soaking a pad within minutes and I’d be sure baby was gone. Bleeding in pregnancy is not normal but it is common. Any time you are concerned just go to the EPU. They have to see you. We ended up getting scanned weekly, or sometimes twice weekly when I had a heavy loss. They were very good at looking after us and I hope you get the same care. Don’t be worried about being a nuisance to them or that they will shrug you off - it’s their job to check baby is okay and to look after your well-being. I hope it settles for you soon and all will be well xx

I have been struggling too, every time the bleeding gets heavier it’s a real worry, and we were pretty sure it was all over when I had the huge clot. But then it eases again... quite draining physically and emotionally. The EPU have been great so far and I’ll definitely get back in touch with them if I am concerned before the dating scan in mid-January, thanks for the advice. Yes fingers crossed it all settles before too long, I have to start reducing the pessaries before long so hoping that may help. Thanks again for your reply x
